With Season 14 of “That Metal Show” already making history (the Season 14 premiere was the second most watched Season Premiere in the history of the series) VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming makes history again with its most diverse lineup of guests since the show began. This week’s show features legendary punk drummer Marky Ramone of the Ramones, Hip-Hop’s “King Of Rock” Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run DMC, and thrash forefather and guitar hero Gary Holt of Exodus/Slayer.

The episode also features Whitesnake’s new guitarist and TMS alum Joel Hoekstra making his return to “That Metal Show” as the guest musician. Joel dazzles the crowd with his incredible playing abilities and gives us some insight about the upcoming new Whitesnake record called The Purple Album slated for release on May 19th. Whitesnake singer and longtime friend of the show David Coverdale checks in via the “Metal Modem” from the recording studio where he is presently laying down the final tracks for The Purple Album.

Marky, Darryl, and Gary are candid and reveal their love of classic rock in the “Put It On The Table” segment. Eddie has a difficult time with “Stump The Trunk” this week and “Take It Or Leave It” has the guys discussing music streaming services and how they feel it affects the current music business. The “TMS Top 5” discusses the hosts’ favorite Album Closers and the “Throwdown” pits two genre smashing songs against each other as Run DMC/Aerosmith “Walk This Way” faces the Public Enemy/Anthrax “Bring Tha Noize.”

With all the attention lately about DMC and Marky Ramone being on TMS, Gary Holt has kinda been pushed to the background. But I’m very excited to see him on the show! I’m such an old school thrash nerd, I still listen to BONDED BY BLOOD, PLEASURES OF THE FLESH and FABULOUS DISASTER from time to time when the mood strikes me to. Old 80’s thrash albums just have a sound to them that I love. Exodus doesn’t get the respect they deserve, never have. They, along with Overkill, just somehow got over looked compared to the attention The Big 4 got but they were both just as good in the early days as those other bands. They’re still just as good as The Big 4. It should have been called The Big 6.

Sorry Eddie, I will be skipping this episode-as much as I appreciate how you champion the Rock n Roll view of the RNRoll Hall of Fame….having rappers & hip-hop artists appear as “musicians” on TMS is tantamount to the same thing you rail against with the HOF for doing. I have read you are long time friends with Anthrax-but they have never been more than a glorified cover band, whose biggest “hit” is nothing but a Hip-Hop/Rap song. Sam Kinison said it best, “Rap music is like a bad fart…its like (waving his hand under his nose) Gees, who turned on the Rap music” ? Spin it any way you want….if I were famous like you, I would probably put my friends on TV too, however remember anyone has respect & credibility when he practices what he preaches….from the pulpit, from the microphone and also in front of your viewers/listeners.

So, your reasoning is that because Ed points out the inconsistencies in the Rock Hall, he shouldn’t have rap artists guest on TMS, as this is inconsistent with what viewers expect from TMS? But, your argument only works if Ed restricts access to his show. That is, if he denied access to a band that was metal, while allowing Rap, that’s not what he’s doing, is it? Your account of Anthrax is also puzzling. Me, I want to see Eric Bloom, and some producers like Tom Allom, Martin Birch, and Eddie Kramer…get them to talk about the records…you guys could be a little more serious…I”m just sayin’…

I can’t disagree more about Anthrax as a glorified covers band. Listening to Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, and their most recent Worship Music proves they’re the most underrated of the Big 4.

Sure, they did a song with Public Enemy and also did their own quasi-novelty rap song, but the rest of their catalog with Belladonna holds up.

Wag Daddy: I think it’s a great idea, and I don’t listen to any rap. The fact is, rap and hard rock/metal have influenced each other for decades, whether it was what band collaborations were discussed on this episode, or even Kiss and Van Halen samples being used in rap tunes, etc. Metal fans are polarizing and it’s a shame. It’s not like Eddie had Jay Z or Taylor Swift on. Living Colour plays rock, metal, dance, funk, they even do a Talking Heads cover. Nobody had a problem with them being on TMS. Hell, Lemmy hates Motorhead being called anything but a “rock and roll” band. So maybe HE shouldn’t be allowed on the show, because hey, “rock and roll” music is Little Richard, Carl Perkins, etc. No? Please lighten up.

Wag daddy. First of all if you ever watch this show you know he doesn’t pick the guests vh1 does. Second although I agree with the rock and roll hall of fame thing DMC was there as a fan of rock music and is actually making a rock record. I wouldn’t care if he had Reba on as long as she was talking about rock or metal. And DMC didn’t talk about that except in reference to the collaboration with Aerosmith.

If you don’t think Eddie has direct influence on who is on HIS show, or that TMS, etc-you are beyond naive. Without Eddie, there is no TMS. Eddie champions Rock N Roll, which is not dead-but is dying….kids don’t like RNR anymore, only older folks like us-for this I am grateful, because in today’s media world Eddie probably has as much clout regarding RNR as anyone has-I was simply saying if have a tv show is titled TMS which is tagged with, “All things Hard Rock & Heavy Metal”…..its blasphemy to have rap artists on the air, even if they say they like rock, Snoop Dog probably likes rock, but I don’t want to see him on TMS-there is a million more places on cable for him to appear….if you want to talk exceptions to this-talk about Ice-T as Body Count has release some good rock/metal music in the past-as well has his hip-hop/rap albums too. The tag line here says, Speak Your Mind-so the rest of you who disagree with me need to have a Coke and a Smile…..I was simply speaking my mind, which Eddie would appreciate even he disagrees with met too.

    • Eddie on

If you think I can have any artist on without network approval then you are extremely misinformed. The criteria is guests the NETWORK who I work for is okay with, and yes I do have say. But I can NOT do it without their okay and their #1 criteria is mainstream well know entertaining artists who like rock and metal or play it. Am I a hip hop Run DMC fan? No. Was DMC great on the show and is he doing a metal album? Yes. Bu the way, Ice T was booked, but cancelled due to his TV schedule and other conflicts

On these websites, if difficult to know that when “Eddie Says’ if it is indeed Eddie Trunk himself responding (or if its a web-site moderator-responding), however I will take it at face value. Yes, I realize you know EXACTLY how your shows works and I do not….but as I stated, there isn’t TMS without you-period, end of story. Your personal influence, your connections and the relationships you have built through the years with the majority of your guests is the heart of the show(s). Your love of RNR mirrors that in all of us who watch it, who listen to your radio gig/podcasts, etc. so that is why I was critical of anything rap-hip-hop on that TMS…there is enough of that already, every where else-I simply wanted to remind you of that because as I mentioned, RNR is dying and I want folks like you-who have insight & influence-to help keep it alive.

      Wag Daddy,

Other than Eddie, the webmaster, Dave, and myself, there are no other moderators on the site.

As far as I know, Eddie and I are the only two that approve and respond to the comments. Therefore, if the reply says it from Eddie, I can attest, it is from Eddie.

Should I ever respond to a question or comment directed to Eddie, I identify myself as responding on his behalf and my name is clearly displayed at the top.

Hope that clears up any confusion you might have had about whether Eddie is legitimately responding to comments.

      Dana from ET.com 🙂

Ritchie getting back into rock with Coverdale would’ve been huge! But I respect Ritchie for being true to himself, what he does makes more sense to me than guys his age going up there and just rehashing their same riffs over and over.
