While loving metal and loving the Priest, what I’ve always loved about the “jamband” world is they don’t give a shit about setlists. They just play what they want to play night to night, whether its more newer stuff or a mix of old and new, but one thing is for sure and that is you know you can’t read the setlist for the first show of the tour and know that is going to be the same thing being played when they come to your town a year later. You would think a band with a 40 year old history and a rabid fanbase would have a mutual understanding it is allright to be different each night and hit the deep cuts some nights, other nights maybe not, but then I’m reminded of the movie Rock Star and that exchange where he explains to Mark Wahlberg why he they can’t use the songs he has written….gotta stick to the “formula”. Sad really with that incredible musical history the Priest has….

If you are a true priest fan, you’ve seen them enough over the years to have caught almost everything live. I’ve seen them enough to where it’s all good. If you caught screaming for vengeance tour, you got almost the whole album. Give or take a few cuts. Defenders of the faith, I remember getting a lot of that album. And so on. This might be the only time you will ever hear march of the damned. Whether you like it or not. The last time I saw them., quite a few years back. Halford came out on the Harley, everyone was. Expecting hell bent but they rolled into freewheel burning. Loved it. Priest rules

      Todd,

I wished I could have seen the Screaming tour, but I was too young back then 🙁 I have the DVD of that show, and I love it, but they didn’t play Fever, which I would have loved to hear.

My first Priest show, and my first concert ever, was Defenders at MSG. Yes, that infamous performance where they destroyed the seats in the arena and earned Priest a lifetime ban from the venue. Interesting way to introduce me to live concert experience-LOL!

      Cheers,
      Dana from ET.com 🙂

I caught the Screaming tour in Knoxville Tn, Jan 14 1983 I believe. I went to this alternative high school where all the cast offs ended up, it was a small school, about half a dozen of us went, and after the show we broke into the school and partied, going on and on about what we just saw. Fever was in the set early in the tour but they dropped it…too bad, that is a dark, progressive, yet, very commercial song, Priest doing it all at this point. Anyways, take care, I won’t be on again for awhile.

      Shannon,

If you can recall, how did it sound live?

Those high notes that the Metal God hits in the bridge that start with “So, destiny has brought us oh so close together, we run like angels in the night, etc..” kill me.

      D 🙂

    • Shannon Patrick on

Well, by the time they rolled into Knoxville it had been nixed, we’re talking very early in the tour…yeah, that bridge is something else, then it goes into that pallid guitar interlude, just total anxiety. This band was so smart. (And it’s metal gods)… : )

    • Dana on

Such a bummer they took it out of the set.

      D 🙂

Adios Shannon, in a few days, I won’t be on for awhile as well.

Impossible to make everyone happy, I think for a metal band in their 60’s doing almost 2 hours is more than enough

    • metalmania on

I have to agree with Eddie. Actually thinking back to when I went to a lot of shows in the 80’s and 90’s, 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs was the norm. Guys like Rush still doing 3 hrs (with a break) is great, and especially impressive given their age as well, but they are exceptions – not the norm. However I’ll agree I would prefer a couple more songs instead of extended singalongs, etc. That’s another thing if you’re trying to compare to Rush – there’s very little “non song” time in their show, they just crank out song after song. Some would complain that they don’t interact with the audience enough, while others prefer to just hear more songs. Can’t be perfect for everyone. And what’s with the post earlier calling the audience “diabetic alcoholics”? Is that supposed to be a jab at the advancing age of the fanbase? I’m neither diabetic nor an alcoholic, but I am middle aged and have never abandoned the music that I love, and never will. Most of the “cool kids” today won’t care about Priest, because they don’t care about rock – apparently rap is king, but I’ve known for a long time the cool kids aren’t as cool as they think they are. I’ll never forget going to Priest shows and Rob Halford’s voice literally making my skull throb, or the spectacle of Iron Maiden at their peak, or the energy of Metallica before they took over the world. You think kids today will feel the same way about Pitbull 30 years from now? Check that – you think they’ll still be going to SEE Pitbull 30 years from now?

My first concert was Monsters of Rock at Giants stadium featuring Metallica,Scorpions,Dokken, and Van Halen . After the Metallica set garbage was thrown from the upper level. Everything from water bottles, beer bottles and 5 gal jugs of water (which hit a girl and the head). Was crazy. Next concert was GnR ,Aerosmith, and Deep Purple at the same venue some one set the seats on fire during smoke on the water and during the GnR set the concession stand on the field was collapse by crazed fans.
How’s that for an introduction to live show All the bands play awesomely. An interesting experience
