Since our “discussions” under the Greta Van Fleet Guitarist Says Rock Nβ Roll Is An βEndangered Speciesβ story, I mentioned Jet as a good example of a rock band who had a vintage sound, but with an original spin.
For those of you who may have forgotten Jet, they were an Australian band (seems a lot of great Rock bands come from the land down under) who formed in 2001. Their album, Get Born, garnered the hit singles Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Cold Hard Bitch, and Rollover DJ.
Their next record, Shine On, saw success from the singles, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and Holiday.
Shaka Rock was the band’s last record, and they sadly broke up in March 2012.
Unbeknownst to me, I am happy to report the band reformed in reformed in 2017 opening five dates for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their Summer ’17 tour.
In 2018, Jet announced a 15th anniversary Australian national tour for their album Get Born, including dates in Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. They also issued the live album Get Born: Live At The Forum to commemorate the tour.
As a fan, I can highly recommend both Get Born and Shine On. I have included a few clips from those records for you enjoyment, I hope you like them.

Besides laughing my ass off, the first time I heard “Cold Hard Bitch” I thought it was AC/DC!
And “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” I thought it was Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life.”
And thanks to RobT and Dana, “I’m Too Sexy” has been stuck in my head all day! π LOL!!!
Well, I like’em and at least they aren’t blatantly plagiarizing from one band.
Me too, D, I like them as well! And I agree I don’t think they purposely we’re trying to sound like AC/DC or Iggy Pop, but obviously the influence is there, which ain’t a bad thing! Especially when you’ve been influenced by your fellow countrymen! π
Oh sorry, I guess I was confused by your post, I blame Right Said Fred-LOL!
No worries, it’s Fred’s fault! So damn busy today, trying to make sure I’m on time tonight for bowling night. My buddies said if I’m late again, I’m gonna end up a big ole pile of “Them Bones!” That’s me, “The One You Know.” π
Getting pumped up for Alice In Chains tomorrow night, and on Sunday night! Have a great weekend, sorry if my post caused some “Confusion,” it ain’t the first time somebody “Got Me Wrong,” and I’m sure it won’t be the last! π Cheers!! π
Jet were a pretty cool band! They didn’t blow me away or anything, but “Cold Hard Bitch” and “Are You Going to Be My Girl” were pretty rockin’ tunes! They actually reminded me a lot of The Cult on the ELECTRIC album. ELECTRIC is my favorite album by The Cult, as the songs are simple with a crunchy riff and good melody. I wasn’t aware that Jet had broken up. Too bad!
Keith,
They got back together in 2017. π
Keith,
Did you listen to Put You Money Where Your Mouth Is? It’s below Are You Gonna Be My Girl in the story.
His falsetto on that song is pretty cool, and I never liked falsetto, but the juxtaposition of his voice from sweet and high to powerful and gruff, is kind of awesome.
Okay, but JetWho, as you call them, is a far better, and more diverse band than the one dimensional, Greta Van Fleet, whom you seem to revere.
Also sorry, if this response sounds snarky, but the Cult has nothing to do with the initial intent of the story, if you bothered to read what actually inspired me to post about Jet, in the first place.
Loving GVF, and dissing John Sykes, yeah, I don’t think we have much in common at all-LOL!!!
Early 2000s had two good bands that I thought would go further than they did…Jet and The Strokes.
Hi, Doug R, glad I inspired visions of Right Said Fred for you. Seriously though, I βve been listening to Greta Van Fleet & Iβm kinda dissapointed with the new music, these guys are so much like Led Zep that they can proxy for them in their own plagiarism trials. I donβt want to rag on these guys too much cos they are good musicians and seem like good guys, but I βm not going to be listening to them that much, even though I felt some of their previous tracks were pretty good and showed a bit more originality.
What do you think of Jet?
Wasn’t visions, Rob, it was more like a nightmare! Good news is I finally got “I’m Too Sexy” out of my head, bad news is, now “Jet” is stuck in my head! Right Said Fred, or Paul McCartney? Hmm… Even though I’m a early bird, (that’s why they call me the “Rooster”) it’s too early, even for me! I wonder if JET got their name from the song? “Jet!” π
Honestly Dana, I never heard them. I heard of them from viewing here, but just never listened to them pretty much the same with Rival Sons as well. A couple of newer acts that I like are Ghost and Dorothy.
Rob,
Join Rattle, he is obsessed with Ghost π and I must confess, while you never heard of Jet, I never heard of Dorothy, except the one from the Wizard of Oz. π
As for Jet, I really like them, because when they came out, in the early 2000’s, they were a bit refreshing. There wasn’t many vintage sounding rock bands being played on commercial radio, and they were played quite a bit, at that time.
Also, their song, Are You Gonna Be My Girl, was featured in an Apple iPod commercial, I am surprised you never saw it, it was everywhere. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oLCO3EEkaI
D π
Ghost rules. Great new band. Dana’s right, as women always are. :o) I’m obsessed with Ghost. I’ll be seeing them in San Diego next month. 4th time seeing them.
Jet, I’ve never heard of them. Thanks for bringing them to my attention, Dana, just like you brought the great Airbourne to my attention. I’ll have to check Jet out further.
Dorothy Hamill? π Yo, Rattle, my brother from another mother, as you know, Airbourne will “Rattle Your Bones!” π Heavy metal thunder from down under! Rock on, paisan!
Did someone say ‘Ghost’?
