GWAR SINGER DAVE BROCKIE, A.K.A. ODERUS URUNGUS, DEAD AT AGE 50

gwar400 Dave Brockie, founder and lead singer of the theatrical metal band Gwar, died Sunday at the age of 50. The news was first reported by Richmond outlet Style Weekly and confirmed by the band’s manager Jack Flanagan.

“It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 p.m. EST Sunday, March 23rd, 2014,” Flanagan said. “His body was found Sunday by his bandmate at his home in Richmond, VA. Richmond authorities have confirmed his death and next of kin has been notified. A full autopsy will be performed. My main focus right now is to look after my bandmates and his family. More information regarding his death shall be released as the details are confirmed.”

Police were called to the singer’s Richmond home Sunday night after responding to a call by Brockie’s roommate. Brockie had already died by the time police arrived. Foul play is not suspected at this time, but a cause of death has yet to be determined.

“Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve known,” former Gwar bassist Mike Bishop told the paper. “He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”

“I wish it was a joke,” added former band member Chris Bopst. “Everyone is in shock.”

Brockie had been in a punk band named Death Piggy that staged crude plays when he founded Gwar in 1984. After meeting band member Hunter Jackson, who had created props for Death Piggy and began work on the film Scumdogs of the Universe, Brockie used the outlandish costumes created for the film to form the joke group Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh. After numerous lineup changes and the shortening of the band name, Brockie dissolved Death Piggy and led Gwar, who released their debut album Hell-O in 1988.

The satirical metal band quickly earned a following for its macabre, over-the-top costumes and scatological, offensive lyrics, fashioning themselves interplanetary warriors descended from aliens who arrived on Earth to enslave and slaughter the human race. The band celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2014, having released their 13th album, Battle Maximus, last year.

“His penchant for scatological humors belied a lucid wit,” said Bishop. “He was a criminally underrated lyricist and hard rock vocalist, one of the best, ever! A great frontman, a great painter, writer, he was also a hell of a bass guitarist. I loved him. He was capable of great empathy and had a real sense of justice.”

In 2011, Cory Smoot, the Gwar guitarist known as Flattus Maximus, was found dead by his bandmates as they prepared to cross the border into Canada. Smoot, who joined the long-running band in 2002, had the longest tenure in the Maximus role and co-produced 2006’s Beyond Hell and 2009’s Lust in Space.

THREE SIDES OF THE COIN INTERVIEWS NEPHEW OF SEAN DELANEY, REVEALS BILL AUCOIN SOLD THE RIGHTS TO KISS IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES

threesidesofthecoinlogo300 Often referred to by KISS fans as “The Fifth KISS,” Sean Delaney was the right hand man of Bill Aucoin, their first manager and the man credited with helping shoot them to superstardom. Delaney served as tour manager, choreographer, and co-wrote songs with the band. He was also asked by Gene Simmons to produce his self titled 1978 solo album.

Russ had a relationship with the band through Sean and also his father, who roadied for KISS.

Throughout the interview, hosts Michael Brandvold and Tommy Sommers hear Russ tell stories about his uncle and what he meant to KISS along with personal stories from his childhood being around the band out of their make up and taking his third grade classmates to watch the band live from the 5th row.

In a shocking story, Russ reveals that Bill Aucoin actually sold the rights to KISS in the early 1980s which contradicts reports of him being fired by the band or quitting because of “creative and directional differences.”

Russ will also be at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony representing the memory of his uncle, Sean, and his legacy with the Hottest Band In The World.

DRUMMER PETER CRISS SAYS THE FACT THAT [THE ORIGINAL KISS LINEUP] IS NOT PERFORMING AT THE ROCK HALL INDUCTION “IS HEARTBREAKING”

peterCriss400 As previously reported, Original KISS drummer, Peter Criss will be special guest on this Saturday’s (March 22nd) episode of That Metal Show.

In the preview clip posted below, as transcribed by blabbermouth.net, Criss explains how he found out about KISS’ Rock Hall induction and he expressed how heartbroken he is that we won’t be performing at the event.

“I got a call from [KISS leaders] Gene [Simmons] and Paul [Stanley], which I hadn’t got a call from them in many, many, many, many, many moons, including when I had my cancer,” Criss said. “And so, all of a sudden, I get a call and I’m being congratulated. ‘We’re gonna have fun.’ And I’m thinking… And I know, as I wrote in my book, there’s a lot of bad blood, and I just don’t trust [those guys] anymore. And I took it with a grain of salt and said, ‘Maybe.’ But then again, I had to go back and read the book myself and go, ‘What, are you crazy? Nothing’s changing. It doesn’t matter what goes on. Something’s gonna happen.’ And I said to [my wife], ‘It sounds too good to be true.'”

He continued: “The fact that we’re not perfoming is heartbreaking. I wanted to. I thought we were going to. I was all up for it. I was crazy enough to think, even if I had to get back in the ‘Cat’ outfit, I would have been proud to do it. Because, whether in or out of makeup, I’ll always be the ‘Catman.'”
