SINGER AXL ROSE SAYS HE CALLED AC/DC TO “OFFER HIS HELP” AND ADMITS THAT SINGING THE “BACK IN BLACK” MATERIAL IS “REALLY CHALLENGING”

Matt Everett of BBC 6 Music News reports:

In his first interview in five years, the Guns N’ Roses star told BBC 6 Music he was huge fan of Johnson’s singing and “wants to do it justice.”

Rose was drafted in after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or “risk total hearing loss”. He makes his debut with the band in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 7th.

“I’m happy and excited in one sense, but I think it would be inappropriate to be celebrating, in a certain way, at someone else’s expense,” he said. “That’s not what I’m here to do. It’s an unfortunate situation.”

…Rose also confirmed it was his idea to approach AC/DC about helping them complete the last 12 dates of their world tour.

“I called the day I read about it in the news, that there was a situation going on with Brian’s hearing,” he said.
“I called a guy who’s their production manager… because I knew there was going to be a problem with having dates on sale and dates sold and stuff like that. So, if I could help, and if I was able to do it, and they were interested, I’d love to help. And that’s how it started. I wasn’t looking at it like, ‘I’m singing for AC/DC.’ I was looking at it like, ‘y’know, if I can, and if they think I’m able to do it.”

Rose also said he didn’t know whether he would be able to sing some of the songs in the set.

“A lot of the Back In Black stuff is really challenging. I’m not here in any way out of any disrespect to Brian. I can’t take anything away from his singing at all,” he said. “He’s a great singer and it’s really challenging to sing it. I’m just trying to do it justice for the fans.”

Rose will be alternating between shows with the Australian band and Guns N’ Roses, who are on tour with original guitarist Slash for the first time since the 1990s.

AC/DC’S ANGUS YOUNG SAYS BRIAN JOHNSON WAS NOT “FIRED” FROM THE BAND

AC/DC’S Angus Young has a message for the fans taking sides following singer Brian Johnson‘s health-related exit from the lineup, don’t believe everything you hear.

“You get a lot of rumors out there; a lot of people think Brian was fired. That’s not the case,” says Young in a new band video, which you can watch at ultimateclassicrock.com. “It was mainly his hearing. He already had a very bad ear, and the good ear that he had left was dropping rapidly. I mean, it was ongoing … all the way pretty much through the tour from the beginning.”

“He had an instance where there was a marked drop in that one good ear and it came back, but not completely,” adds bassist Cliff Williams. “The doc told him this can happen again and it may not come back. So, you know, you kind of — what do you do with that?”

As Young sees it, the situation was out of the band’s control — and they knew they were going to face some blowback no matter what they did, whether they continued without Johnson or pulled the plug on the tour. “We wouldn’t win in a lot of situations, because if we just stopped, there would have been a lot of people unhappy.”

For Axl Rose, the opportunity to step in as Johnson’s replacement sounds like something of a bittersweet dream come true. “It’s a horrible thing,” he said of Johnson’s condition. “You hope he gets better. I’m not dancing around about this, because it’s not like, okay, somebody said they’re gonna go do something else. It’s because of an unfortunate circumstance. And that’s something I’m very aware of.”

GUITAR ICON RITCHIE BLACKMORE SAYS THAT HIS LATEST VERSION OF RAINBOW WILL NOT RECORD ANY NEW MUSIC, NOR TOUR PAST THEIR THREE SCHEDULED SHOWS

Ritchie Blackmore has ruled out the possibility of touring or recording with the latest Rainbow lineup.

He has no plans to continue the project beyond their three concerts in June – and remains committed to Renaissance music and his band Blackmore’s Night.

His comments come after Rainbow bassist Bob Curiano said the band were ready to record any time they were asked, and former singer Joe Lynn Turner said the band’s legacy would be tarnished if no studio work was undertaken.

Asked if there’s any chance of a world tour, Blackmore tells the Italian website SpazioRock, “No. Also, there will not be any new studio album. I thought I’d just get back to playing the old songs one more time. My commitment lies with Blackmore’s Night – this is just a few dates for fun.”

He offers a reason for selecting an all-new lineup for the rock shows, “I’m not a big fan of names,” he says. “I believe in playing with good musicians rather than famous people.”

The guitarist recently underwent surgery on his left hand, and says, “The recovery is coming along. Any operation on fingers is always involved, but I don’t foresee any problems.”

Rainbow play the Monsters Of Rock festival in Germany on June 17th and 18th, then at the Genting Arena, Birmingham, UK, on June 25th.

COMEDIAN JIM BREUER SAYS, AS AN AC/DC FAN, HE WAS “HURT” BY THE WAY THE BAND TREATED SINGER BRIAN JOHNSON

According to AC/DC singer Brian Johnson’s friend Jim Breuer, the comedian believes AC/DC should have announced their split with the singer at a press conference featuring the whole band – and that guitarist Angus Young “came off cold” by not doing so.

Johnson was forced to bow out in March over the risk of immediate hearing loss, a situation that was explained with a brief announcement from the band. They’ve since confirmed Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose as his replacement for the last 10 shows of their Rock Or Bust world tour.

Last month Johnson release a statement saying he was “crushed” by his departure from the band, but that he hoped medical attention might allow him to return to performing at some point.

Breuer caused controversy in the days after the split by suggesting the band had dumped Johnson’s gear in his driveway without a word. He later explained he’d been speaking figuratively.

Now he tells Talk Toomey, “Me as a fan, and I think most fans, would think you’d see the band together in a press conference, like, ‘We feel horrible for Brian here. We put so many years together. Brian’s going to try and get help and we’re going to look for a singer and move on. We all love Brian, and this is kind of a goodbye-to-Brian tour.’

To not see that, and just read a headline that says, ‘We’re looking for new singers,’ it’s a little weird.”

He adds he was “hurt” by the way AC/DC dealt with the situation, continuing, “You could have made it a celebration. When it was all said and done, Brian came off very classy and Angus came off cold. Like Wal-mart just replacing a cashier.”

Breuer says of Young, “He needs to know his audience. He needs to know how much love, time, investment and money we put into Brian Johnson.”

An AC/DC spokesperson this week told TeamRock that the band themselves had chosen to offer refunds to those who don’t want to attend Rose-fronted shows, saying: “They care about their fans and wanted to do right by them.” The rescheduled performances begin this weekend.

JIM BREUER AND THE LOUD & ROWDY RELEASES NEW VIDEO FOR “THRASH”

Comedian Jim Breuer threw a metal show in his garage and captured it all on film for his new video Thrash. Following the announcement of his musical debut Jim Breuer along with backing band The Loud & Rowdy. Watch it below.

Due out May 27th via Metal Blade Records, Songs From The Garage delivers comedy and masterful heavy music in a record that is unadulterated fun. To hear the first single, Be A D**k 2Nite, and to pre-order the album in various formats, please visit metalblade.com/songsfromthegarage.

Breuer tells Loudwire, Thrash pretty much wraps up what this project and album represents. This song is for people that grew up with rock and hard rock who now have families, but still love to take the time to throw down & thrash!”

The track and video do just that. We find Breuer home alone letting loose when he decides to throw a metal show for the entire neighborhood. Madness ensues as the show-goers head bang and sing along to the anthemic track. Produced by Allison Woest and directed by David Brodsky along with Jim Breuer himself, the video provides pure entertainment and even includes an Ozzy Osbourne impersonation.

The album features special guests such as Brian Johnson (AC/DC) who provides vocals on two tracks and Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat) who produced the record and provided guitar. Backing Breuer up is The Loud & Rowdy with Mike Tichy on drums and Joe Vigliotti on bass. The inspiration for all of this comes from Breuer’s adolescent immersion in the world of heavy music, falling in love with Judas Priest and AC/DC, alongside the likes of The Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, and Van Halen. The fire to start a band was soon lit under him, though he wouldn’t begin his musical career until he was older. Having finally made the album that has been burning to get out of him since his teens, Breuer couldn’t be happier with the result.
