8/12: REVIEW OF ACE FREHLEY’S “SPACE INVADER” ALBUM.

Been asked by many for my review of the new Ace Frehley album. I have been living with it for a while now and premiered the title track last night on my radio show. I have been hesitant to post a review because many will feel it will be bias because of my long time friendship with him. However anyone who TRULY follows me and what I do knows I give my honest view regardless of personal relationships on all things. So with that in mind here’s my take; this is a very solid hard rock album. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it as good as the ’78 record? No, but in some ways pretty damn close. But it is not 1978 and Ace is not 30, and we haven’t had 35 years to live with this to see how it holds up. But it is an album better than many will expect and certainly delivers in many areas. It is pretty simple really. If you are an Ace fan, love his persona, attitude and playing, you will love the album. The album has a space theme running throughout. Maybe a statement of ownership from the original (and in my opinion only) spaceman? Production is solid. It sounds live, guitars loud, and it really jumps out at you (maybe at times a bit too much). Maybe the most amazing thing about the album is Ace’s voice. Obviously he was never Freddie Mercury, but in a Keith Richards sort of way he has an attitude and conviction in his voice that people love and more than makes up for any lack of range. People love when he sings and it clearly worked during the Kiss years with Shock Me, NY Groove and many others. Ace’s voice is strong and out front throughout. Really impressed how well he’s belting it out. And his playing is maybe better than it’s been in a very long time. My only complaint being that some songs fade on solos that I wish would stay up another 30 seconds or so. Always hated when my favorite albums and players have songs that fade while there is tasty guitar stuff happening. But everything has to end at some point I guess. As for the songs the best of them are the title track, the lead single “Gimme A Feelin” (best shot at real airplay as a single to me), “I Wanna Hold You” (another possible single), “Immortal Pleasures” (different vibe, great vocal and Ace singing about the good times.), “What Every Girl Wants” (another possible single), and “Past The Milky Way” (a classic space vibe that reminds me of something from the ’78 album, great solos, fades too soon though. Would love it to just keep going!). The space theme continues with the album closer, an instrumental titled “Starship” that does give a nod to Fractured Mirror and clocks in at around 8 minutes. Again some of Ace’s best soloing and guitar sounds in a very long time. The guy that influenced so many closing out with a sonic blend of guitars on top of guitars! The final thing heard is Ace asking if “anyone has seen George Jetson”, followed by his classic cackle! Again, classic Ace! The Steve Miller cover of  “The Joker” is fine but I would have liked to see him make it more his own. The tracks I didn’t mention are far from throw aways, but material wise I like the above tracks best. It really is a fine album that is best served listened to as a complete experience. And here is what’s really great about it. It truly has the classic Kiss vibe running through it naturally. While that band continues to try and make records that sound like classic Kiss by making two fine musicians in Tommy and Eric play like the people they have to portray, Ace IS classic Kiss. It’s the genuine artifact! The album drips with the spirit of classic Kiss and classic Ace from top to bottom naturally. It is all Ace knows. And if you are a fan that’s a damn good thing! Regardless of the attempts at times from the current Kiss to diminish his contributions, when you listen to Space Invader it becomes incredibly obvious just how much Ace meant to Kiss in his sound, playing and attitude. And this album proves he still has it in spades, or Ace’s… As Gene Simmons said himself during his R&R Hall Of Fame speech, Ace has often been imitated but never duplicated. Now there’s something I can truly say I agree with from Gene! Again, if you are/were a Kiss/Ace fan, nothing not to love here. Clearly Ace’s years of sobriety have reinvigorated him to create an album far better than anyone might have expected at this point in his career. And Space Invader is sonic proof just how vital he truly was (as was Peter) to the sound and concept of Kiss. Welcome back to the one and only Space Ace!

PS: There is a deluxe version of the album with two bonus tracks. But those tracks are only radio edits of two songs on the album. So unless you are super hardcore or want the digipak and poster the regular version has essentially the same material.

    Eddie,
I heard only two tracks so far and I think your review of this album is beyond fair and honest. This review does not come across as you gassing up Ace. It reads as sincere and that is why I have been a fan of yours from the DHA days. The tracks I have heard sound solid, thanks for review!

I said I think 6 of the songs are great. I didn’t say it’s a brilliant mater stroke. Solid album for sure. Those looking to start trouble and advance THEIR bias and not respect all opinions is where the problems are. Thanks.

The fact that you compared it to his 1978 solo cd is a joke.

i am very funny i guess..

Ace = the sound of classic Kiss. Period. End of story

There are plenty of guitarists who are technically better than Ace, but few have that a signature sound that is easily recognizable.

Thanks Eddie. I appreciate your review. I will pick up this cd ASAP. I also got the new Kiss Monster as well. Tommy does a great job with some serious guitar work on it. Some prefer to be petty, I prefer to give credit where it’s due.

I think we would have gotten a more unbiased review from Don or Jim. The album is not as good as you try to make it sound. Trouble Walkin was better than this. Seriously I just disagree.

    • Eddie on

Jim is not a fan. Don is. They can do reviews on their sites if they wish. Have you heard the full album? Since it’s not out yet just wondering how people know? Respect your opinion, I posted mine. But the whole “bias” thing that some perceive was why I didn’t even want to post a review. I simply can’t win. Say nothing and people say I must hate it, say I like it and I’m bias..

Welcome to liberal land Eddie! I like your review and can’t wait to hear the record!

Ed…..it all comes down to personal opinion. But lately I’m finding that some posters speak with their emotions rather than having any perspective. Don’t let a few meatheads bother your views of topics. At the end of the day this is YOUR website & we are all honored to be a part of it…..Joe in The Cuse

You’ve already “won,” Ed. Look at your life and career. As for Ace, I’ve only heard “Feelin'” (pretty good) and “Joker” (dreadful). Based on your review I’ll give the rest of the album a shot, but my expectations for an Ace record in 2014 are radically tempered. On a side note, I thought more than half of Monster was pretty damn good and I don’t agree that Tommy and Eric’s playing is in a box. On the contrary, I’d say they serve the songs well.

      Good post Dave.

Eddie, your review is fine…sorry to say I have to agree that your mentioning of current Kiss, whether intended or not, sounds absurd…no reason to even mention current Kiss.. To go a step further, why are you mentioning Peter in this review?? I’ve said it many times…I think you are great, but the stuff you complain about by the idiots who constantly make it about Gene and Paul and have comments just to “stir the pot” are no different than yours. It’s your site to do what you want, but i laugh at the people who just comment on anything Kiss related to either say Ace and Peter suck, or Gene and Paul suck, etc… Thought comments should be around the news topic?? Don’t stoop to the level of a few meatheads…you do yourself no favors by how you react to these idiots, or how you let your personal beef with Paul and Gene take away your credibility…I don’t agree with you on a lot, and I also agree with you on a lot, but no one is going to tell me that you should be mentioning current Kiss ” imposters” in an Ace Frehley review…

    • Eddie on

There is a sticker on the new Ace album that mentions Kiss twice and I had nothing to do with it. How and why it is absurd to mention a band the guy founded in comparing his music is beyond me. Just about every review I read has. Including major magazines like Classic Rock. And since Gene and Paul continue to tell you how unimportant Ace and Peter really were, MY point in MY review was that the album captures the classic Kiss spirit and proves they WERE and ARE important to the legacy! Thank you.

    • George on

Agreed, it’s your review. I was only referring to your shot at the “impersonators” and mentioning Peters contribution to Kiss, not the entire post and certainly not your review. I agree mentioning it sounds like classic Kiss is more than appropriate…notice I said mentioning Peter too (classic Kiss sound Peter added to…), not just the “imposters” so it’s a review of Aces new record…I wouldn’t have mentioned it…anything about anyone but Ace has no relevance…the other 3 originals didn’t play on it, and neither did Tommy or Eric, so my point is why stir the pot?? Why even say any of that, if not to take shots,,or expect the idiots to come out??

Eddie what I don’t get on here is if someone has a strong opinion, it’s “stirring the pot,” like Eddie, for example, doesn’t know anything about the music biz? Guys, if someone else’s point of view shakes yours to the point that you get that worked up, hurling insults, saying someone is “complaining,” then you have some kind of personal issue.

    • staten island clown on

What I’m saying is come back with a good counter argument, what’s with this “stirring the pot” nonsense? Notice I said a GOOD counter argument. It’s like people on here are either way too polite, or they hurl these ridiculous personal insults, ..the intelligent debate, is that some kind of lost art now?

    • Pete on

Hey micheal,go troll justin bieber’s website. Eddie gave a fair review of the album. By the way,Kiss has never had the signature guitar sounds and riffs since Ace hasnt been part of Kiss….FACT!

    • metalmania on

Couple things up front: I’m not a Kiss fan and I haven’t heard this album. In fact the only Ace album I do have is the first Frehley’s Comet, which I thought was a solid hard rock record that didn’t blow my mind but I enjoyed listening to once and a while. So I read Eddie’s review as an unbiased observer, and as such I have to say it’s pretty clear to me he never said this was the greatest thing he’s ever heard, but a good hard rock record. Why can’t some of you guys accept his opinion? Yes, we all know he’s a fan of classic Kiss – so what’s wrong with saying if you like that then there’s a good chance you’ll like this? If you don’t think it was as good as Eddie feels it is, you know you can say that without trying to illegitimacize (is that even a word?) his opinion. The site IS called “EddieTrunk.com” after all! It seems like for some of you unless Eddie totally slams Ace then you’ll accuse him of being “biased”, as if it’s just not possible that Ace could produce something that is genuinely likeable. I also can’t imagine any review of an ex-Kiss member’s material, ANY ex-member, not mentioning Kiss, or Gene, or Paul. If Tony Iommi did a side project would you really expect to read any articles that didn’t mention Black Sabbath? Eddie, I appreciate you taking the time to post reviews, and the only valid reviews are honest opinions regardless of what anyone else thinks. You can’t please all the people all the time, and to me at least you do call it like you see it.

  • Neill on

Eddie, there is absolutely no need on your part to defend your opinion of the album. It is exactly that: an opinion. The complaints in the comments regarding the mention of the artists’s former affiliation with an extraordinarily famous rock band — of which he only happens to be a founding member — in your review are juvenile, antagaonistic and completely unnecessary. Disregard these nimrods who feel they have nothing better to do than poke and prod.
