WHITESNAKE RELEASE LIVE VIDEO FOR “THE GYPSY”

Whitesnake 2014

Whitesnake 2014

Whitesnake have released a live video for their take on Deep Purple classic The Gypsy. Watch it below.

It appears the band’s latest release, The Purple Album, designed as a tribute to his former band after an attempted reunion with Ritchie Blackmore failed to take place.

Forntman David Coverdale recently said, “Everyone did their homework, and every performance is done respectfully in honor of Deep Purple’s musicians. There were respectful nods to the original musicians throughout the album, and it has come out delightfully. It’s a tribute to Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Ritchie Blackmore, who gave me my break in the first place.”

The Purple Album was released in May 18th.

My opinion on these Whitesnake/Purple retakes is that they squeeze the life out of them and smother them in late 80’s cheese whiz.

Go and listen to the originals, then listen to all of these that Coverdale has redone. Sure, recording techniques give it a different sound, but something’s missing.

Coverdale has always surrounded himself with stellar musicians, but it’s always a take on the same theme. One weedly deedly whammy bar guitarist (Reb Beach, DeMartini Vai, etc…), one Les Paul wielding gunslinger (Aldrich, Sykes, Hoekstra), and the same hammer style drummer (Aldridge, or whomever sounds like him and is available), and various versions, rinse and repeat. Makes for some generic sounding audio that I think doesn’t do service to the original songs, but that’s just my opinion.

Personally, I think the last halfway original work Coverdale did was with Jimmy Page. It’s too bad that didn’t continue.

Thank you, David, for this album, from an old school Purple fan.

I agree as I loved hearing the Snake play these on tour this summer and to the delight of a lot of younger fans (I am 49) who really got into the Purple stuff. Coverdale era Purple was short but produced some great songs and David has every right to sing them, thanks David!!!!

I’m a huge fan of heavy blues rock, and few do it better than Whitesnake, and also John Sykes. I like melodic and not cookie monster vocals. Although I think Doug Aldrich did an admirable job, I’m not even sure they need a second guitarist past Reb Beach and a decent keyboardist, although the Les Paul vs. “Stat type” guitar balance offers a nice contrast against each other (Kotzen/ Wylde would be interesting;) . I also think Tommy Aldridge is still one of my all time favorite drummers. Where the hell is the new John Sykes album? Blue Murder was awesome!

Are you kidding? the songs are in the wrong key, this almost sounds like Alice In Chains….unlistenable, and you see them up there acting like everything’s great.

Ugh! You see Clown, this is why you drive me to drink! ALICE IN CHAINS…unlistenable? Are you kidding? AIC is only 1 of a few bands from the “grunge era” that I actually like, a lot! You won’t listen to AIC, but you’ll listen to rap?? Talk about UNLISTENABLE!! Even after all this time, I’m still trying to figure you out Clown, haven’t yet, but I will! 😉

As a Deep Purple fan and a Whitesnake fan, I don’t understand the purpose of this album.

If DC wanted to do an Iron Maiden style theme tour, and take Purple Mk III & IV material on the road, I’d be fine with that. A live CD/DVD from that tour would be cool. But to go into the studio to put together new, inferior versions makes no sense. I’ll just listen to my copies of Burn, Stormbringer, and Come Taste the Band.

And the last two Whitesnake albums were really good, especially Forevermore.
