MÖTLEY CRÜE’S NIKKI SIXX SAYS DAVID LEE ROTH WAS ASKED TO BE ON “THE STADIUM TOUR” AND DECLINED, STATING, “I DON’T OPEN FOR BANDS THAT I INFLUENCED”

Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx is featured in article of the Los Angeles Times dubbed The 25 concerts, festivals, albums and music docs we’re most excited for this fall.

Sixx’s, The First 21: How I Became Nikki Sixx memoir, due October 19th, was included on the list.

Describes the L.A. Times. “When the pandemic delayed a planned 2020 stadium tour, …bassist Sixx found himself hiding out in Wyoming with nothing but time to reflect on his pre-Crüe days; the result is this funny yet surprisingly moving memoir of a small-town kid figuring out who he wanted to be.

Fun fact Sixx dispenses about that stadium tour now set for 2022: the Crüe invited Van Halen’s David Lee Roth to share the bill but he passed. ‘I don’t open for bands that I influenced,’ Sixx says Roth told him. “

In October 2019, Roth reflected on the influence of Van Halen on bands that followed, telling KKLZ’s The Mike & Carla Morning Show (as per blabbermouth.net) “Hair bands were the imitations of Van Halen. Yeah, it is true, and spandex was what they came up with as something visual. I started off in leather…But Van Halen was a ’70s band — we started off in 1972, and our first two albums were in the ’70s. We sold our first 10 million records before the ’70s were over. We spawned a whole lot of imitators who resorted to gimmickry and trade crap. It’s easier to imitate a haircut and a kind of pants and to exhibit bad behavior.”

In other Roth news, the singer recently made headlines after KISS bassist Gene Simmons was asked why the Van Halen frontman is not opening for their second set of upcoming Las Vegas residency dates. Linked below are all the stories related to that discussion.

  1. You know what would be real fun , roth should call vai, Sheehan and bissonette, put together a short run of shows , wipe that insane smile off of his face drop the idiotic shtick he’s been doing , put a sneer back on his face and go out and smash it!! # shine on you crazy diamond

  2. This is a great quote in the LA Times to sell a book. Whether it’s actually true or greatly embellished and exaggerated, no one will ever know. Logistically and chronologically, it seems a little dubious. Prior to the pandemic, when these tour schedules were being made, isn’t it possible that Dave already committed to KISS and just couldn’t switch tours, and maybe in classic fashion – and to promote his tour with KISS – gave a quotable quote about why he didn’t play with Motley Crue? Also, perhaps he was just offered more money on the KISS tour. Not to contradict the purists, but rock & roll – no matter how much money you already have – is still a business and it’s still about making money.

    1. Well, knowing Roth is far from a shrinking violet, if this quote is not true, or greatly exaggerated, I am sure Dave will clarify it.

  3. Alice Cooper made some serious bank opening for Motley on their supposed “farewell” tour. I applaud him for being humble enough to help his band and crew out financially. When you turn down an offer with big potential dividends because of Ego (like DLR did) you’re effecting your employees as well.

  4. Roth has done a lot of things EMT, climbing mountains, art, Martial Arts. Hope some of you get the reference but maybe he wants to be another Buckaroo Banzai. Next, he’ll go to med school to be a brain surgeon.

    1. Well, I think his Dad was a famous eye surgeon, so that would not be a shock.

Roth is a real Renaissance man and far from boring.
