DEEP PURPLE, CHEAP TRICK AND YES ARE AMONG THE NOMINEES FOR INDUCTION INTO THE ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2016

deeppurple640 Rockers Nine Inch Nails, pop icon Janet Jackson and top-selling 1970s band Chicago were among the nominees announced on Thursday for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

The eclectic list for this year’s crop of inductees also ranges from a bevy of 1970s-era acts such as Yes, The Cars, Steve Miller, Deep Purple and Cheap Trick, to so-called Queen of Funk Chaka Khan and disco sensation Chic, which has been nominated more than 10 times but has yet to gain entrance.

Rounding out the list of nominees for induction are The Smiths, who broke up many years ago, R & B group The Spinners, L.A. band Los Lobos, rappers N.W.A. and The J.B.’s.

Jackson, despite her decades-long status as a top force in pop music, had never before been nominated. The 49-year-old sister of pop legend Michael Jackson recently released her first album since 2008.

Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first record for induction into the Hall of Fame, which was established in 1983.

More than 800 artists, music industry professionals and historians will decide who will be inducted. Fans will also be able to cast their votes.

The top five artists selected by the public will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be counted along with the other ballots to select the 2016 inductees.

Inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland which features exhibits, educational programs, a library and archives.

The Hall of Fame will announce its choices in December and they will be inducted at a ceremony in New York on April 8th.

  1. If there’s any justice in this universe, Deep Purple will finally get in this year. In my opinion, there can be no true Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without them. They sometime get underrated because of the several different lineups.

For my money, in the early 70s, there was no better hard rock band on the planet than Deep Purple. Not Led Zeppelin. Not The Who. But, look at the run of albums – In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Who Do We Think We Are, Burn. Throw in Made in Japan, and WOW!! I wonder if Ritchie would come out of his castle to attend.

I think its a given that NWA will be inducted due to the hype with their biopic. Not that they deserve it, but they’ll make it. You’ll probably get either Chaka Khan or Chic also, so that potentially only leaves three spots for the true rock acts.

  2. Everyone on that list should get in, or already be in! With the exception of The Smiths, Los Lobos, the rappers, (UGH) and The J.B.’s.
Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, Chicago, The Cars, Yes, The Spinners, Steve Miller Band, this is their year! All these great bands should have been in already, but I guess it’s better late than never!

    1. Wow you’re correct about something. Good for you. This HALL OF FAME is musics equivalent to the NFL PRO BOWL. Not even an afterthought. Worthless nonesense to sell t-shirts in HARD ROCK CAFES. DEEP PURPLE requires no validation of their excellence. Perhaps the best keyboard player and a top five guitarist, bassist and drummer and 3 great singers. If Chaka Khan gets on that stage to sing SPEED KING with the band, then quite honestly that would be a moment. Hopefully Lord’s mustache gets its proper respect. He may be the best keyboard player ever, but that was definitely the most superior mustache in all of history.

  3. I’m glad Cheap Trick as well as Deep Purple is getting recognized, although this will renew bitterness about Bun E. Carlos’s status. And just to reiterate, if Deep Purple gets in, the real question is not whether Blackmore will show up (he says he won’t), but whether Rod Evans will.

    1. Will Rod Evans show up anywhere?

I’d be curious to see exactly who from Purple they’d induct.

I’d think Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Simper, Evans, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Hughes. Apologies to Bolan, Morse, and Airey.

    2. I’d expect Gillan, Glover and Paice to resist the induction of anyone beyond the current line-up. Gillan claims he’s never listened to the Hughes/Coverdale songs. Blackmore at least has made it easier on the band (by the way, he’s suing them again) by refusing to show up.
