EDDIE TRUNK DISCUSSES AC/DC PLAYING COACHELLA, INTERVIEWING KISS AND THE CRAZIEST THING HE HAS EVER SEEN AT A METAL SHOW

eddieoverkilltshirt400 Bella Elbaum of Monsters and Critics spoke with Eddie. Excerpts from the interview appear below.

Monsters and Critics: How do you feel about AC/DC headlining this years Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival? How do you think they’ll do?

Eddie Trunk: There’s not a lot of other bands at that festival that are gonna be of any great interest to AC/DC fans. But AC/DC is so big that they transcend hard rock at this point. So, I think it will do just fine. I think that there will be a ton of people for them. There’s a lot of AC/DC fans that if they go are gonna show up just to see them the one day they are playing. Maybe, also now that there have been some other shows announced just saying, okay, we’ll just go to those. It’s not really an AC/DC fans bill outside of AC/DC. They can work on any sort of bill because they cross over to so many genres now. I think the real AC/DC fan is waiting to go to their own show or them to be at a festival that is a bit more cohesive with that genre of music.

Monsters and Critics: When you first started in VH1 you had an interview with KISS. I know that they were one of the bands that started and prompted your love for heavy rock and metal. How did it feel to be able to interview a band that has been such a significant part of your life?

Eddie Trunk: You’re right they were the band that really started it all for me as a fan, and I had done a number of interviews with them over the years. Two of the original members Ace and Peter are close friends to this day, and Ace was the first signing I ever had when I worked for Megaforce back in 1987. I’ve had a great friendship with those guys. Although I’ve interviewed Gene and Paul and done some scattered stuff with them over the years. I never really had the chance to do the in depth interview that I would like to with those guys. Because of my relationship with Gene and Paul and because of some very erroneous information in their heads, they don’t work with me and don’t interview with me and don’t come on my shows, and that’s unfortunate. Maybe because their audience watches my show and wants to see them on my show more than anything.

That opportunity just hasn’t been there and they just for whatever reason won’t do it. Life goes on, there’s nothing you can do, you hope that they come around one day and decide to do it. The times that I did do interviews with them it was interesting. I would still like to one day get into a real in depth interview, because it is one of my favorite bands who meant a lot to me, and I’d like to talk about the stuff I like and the stuff I don’t like and have an intelligent discussion and debate about their entire history. The good, the bad the not so good. They’re very much the sort of band that you have to fall in line with what they want you to do on any given moment and if you deviate from what they’re trying to sell at the moment they don’t want to deal with you. Again, hopefully one day it will come around and change, but for the most part I’ve got the memories of the things that we did. For the most part they were all really fun.

Monsters and Critics: What was the craziest thing you’ve ever seen at a metal show?

Eddie Trunk: There’s two. I remember going to England for the very first time which was in 1987 to what use to be called Monsters of Rock and is now called Download. I went there with Anthrax, I was working with them at the time. They played the main festival stage, and I just remember them playing and seeing this mosh pit form. That was like nothing I had ever seen before. This sea of people in this circle, and I was standing on the side of the stage looking out. I was actually working Scott Ian’s video camera for him, and kept pointing to me from the stage to shoot out there because he couldn’t believe it either. I remember just being overwhelmed and seeing that many people react to that band like that. I thought it was amazing.

I also saw Marilyn Manson play on their very first tour for their very first album. They played at a small club in New Jersey that’s no longer there. I went out there to see them. I actually just saw Manson a few weeks ago and brought this up to him, and we talked about it for a minute. He played this club, and I had never seen him. I had gotten the record, I liked the record and I just didn’t know much more about him other than that. I went out there, and the place was only maybe half full, but it was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen. It was like completely over the top. This was before anyone had really heard Manson speak or knew what he was about. It was just complete mayhem.

People would come up on stage and smack him in the ribs with the mic stand, he was cutting himself. It was legitimately dangerous over the top insanity. I remember wanting to get closer to the stage, but there was so much stuff flying off of it. It’s one of the most memorable shows I ever saw. Now of course it’s different Manson is more established, you know what he’s about. He’s been in TV shows and what have you. Back then it was this whole new thing and you didn’t know what to make of it and I was completely compelled by it. It was pretty intense.

FORMER MOTLEY CRUE SINGER JOHN CORABI CONFIRMS PLANS TO WORK WITH GUITARIST MICK MARS

JohnCorabiMickMars640 Singer John Corabi who who took over for Vince Neil to record the Motley Crue’s self-titled 1994 album, says he plans to work with former bandmate Mick Mars.

“Yeah, actually I was just talking to him the other day,” Corabi told Jack Antonio. “A lot of people already know about it, but as soon as he’s done doing this next tour, Mick and I have had some discussions about possibly going in and doing some writing together and doing a record, and maybe going out and doing some shows. So we’ll see how that works.”

Mars and the Crue will wrap up their ongoing Final Tour on December 31st at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Corabi, meanwhile, will perform as part of the Monsters of Rock Cruise on April 22nd.

After Neil’s return to Motley Crue in 1997, Corabi went on to form Union with former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick. He was also a member of Ratt and offshoot bands like Twenty 4 Seven and Angel City Outlaws. But Corabi says he always felt a lingering kinship with Mars.

“Mick’s a great player,” Corabi said. “Me being able to play [guitar], and play as well as I do … Mick didn’t have to worry about, ‘Okay, I’ve gotta play the rhythm here.’ ‘Okay, I’ve gotta [break into] the solo.’ ‘Now I’ve gotta get back to the rhythm.’ He had the freedom to just be the lead guitar player, and I was able to cover up and do whatever rhythms he asked me to do that gave him freedom to be that lead guy. And I think he enjoyed it.”

METALLICA REISSUE PROJECT LAUNCHES WITH “NO LIFE ’TIL LEATHER” CASSETTE FOR RECORD STORE DAY IN APRIL

metallicawithdavemustaine640 Metallica are reissuing their 1982 demo tape, No Life ’Til Leather, as a limited-edition cassette. The tape will be released on April 18th, on Record Store Day.

The seven-track cassette was first released in the summer of 1982, when the group consisted of guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, with bassist Ron McGovney and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who would go on to form Megadeth.

The tape’s seven songs include Hit the Lights, The Mechanix, Motorbreath, Seek & Destroy, Metal Militia, Jump in the Fire and Phantom Lord. All but The Mechanix would be featured on the group’s debut, Kill ’Em All. Mustaine wrote the song, a speed-metal track, and later recorded it for Megadeth’s 1985 debut, Killing Is My Business…and Business Is Good. Metallica rewrote the song as The Four Horsemen and released it on Kill ’Em All.

At the time of the tape’s original release Metallica were just one year away from issuing Kill ’Em All, and No Life ’Til Leather shows them in their unvarnished state. Metallica have remastered the tape for this reissue but haven’t attempted to alter the mix so that it can present “the same innocence and, I guess, borderline ignorance, of four kids barely out of puberty, rockin’ along, doing their thing,” Ulrich tells Rolling Stone.

The reissue will copy the original’s J-card paper liner, right down to Ulrich’s handwritten track listing. Ulrich estimates that he mailed between 50 and 100 copies of the original tape to tape traders, who would copy the recording and pass it along to friends, helping to spread the band’s music and popularity.

No Life ’Til Leather will be released on Blackened Recordings, Metallica’s label, and will be the first of what Ulrich says will be many more reissues.

According to the drummer, there are a “lot of goodies that are laying around in cardboard boxes and tape vaults.” He hopes to announce “a big package” of reissues within a couple of months.

“Yesterday, I found another tape and handed it to [engineer] Greg Fidelman, and there was some crazy stuff on the B-side that I didn’t even know existed,” Ulrich says. “It’s all coming. We’re doing our best.”

No Life ’Til Leather has never been officially released, but the demo is widely available on YouTube. Listen to Hit the Lights, below.

BLACK STAR RIDER’S FRONTMAN RICKY WARWICK DISCUSSES WHY JOE ELLIOTT COULD NOT PRODUCE THEIR LATEST ALBUM, THE ADDITION OF BASSIST ROBBIE CRANE AND THE DELUXE EDITION OF “THE KILLER INSTINCT”

blackstarriders640 Ruben Mosqueda of Metal Titans spoke with Black Star Riders frontman Ricky Warwick. Excerpts from the interview appear below.

MetalTitans: You originally had [Def Leppard frontman] Joe Elliot to produce the [new Black Star Riders] album. Then he stepped aside at one point. What exactly took place?

Ricky Warwick: Joe approached us about producing the new record in January of 2014. He told us that he really loved All Hell Breaks Loose and that he’d really love to produce the follow up album. As you know Joe is a really close friend of mine; he’s worked on my solo albums and worked with Scott (Gorham) on the (Thin) Lizzy remasters. It was ideal for us we love the idea of making a record with Joe. As the year progressed Def Leppard was offered the opportunity to do the KISS tour. Def Leppard also began to write new material so Joe after thinking he was going to have a year of down time got really busy. Around the end of May, Joe called us up and told us that he was very sorry that he couldn’t give us the commitment and time that we needed to record this record and he bowed out. That was huge blow to us and we were very disappointed but we had to press forward.

MetalTitans:…There’s been a new addition to Black Star Riders for the recording of the new album, The Killer Instinct. Marco Mendoza has departed and you have enlisted Robbie Crane. The transition seems to be rather seamless at least on the record.

Ricky Warwick: I agree with you it’s been seamless. Jimmy Degrasso knew Robbie. Marco was gracious enough to let us now that he’d be leaving so we did have some time to look for a replacement. Marco was also active in searching for his replacement, but as I said it was Jimmy who suggested Robbie. Again like with Nick [the band’s producer] we checked off all the boxes when we looked at Robbie. I personally had never met Robbie but I was aware that he was in Ratt. Robbie wasn’t doing anything at the time so we called him and sent him the first album. He called us back and said “I love it and this is certainly something that I’d be very interested in doing.” We were playing at the Canyon Club in California and Robbie came down to see us. We invited him on stage to play The Boys Are Back In Town at sound check. Scott looked at me and said “I haven’t heard anyone play that song like that since Phil (Lynott) played it.” Not taking anything away from Marco (Mendoza) but Robbie has a more aggressive way of playing. It also helped that Robbie fit right in with the rest of the guys in the band; personality wise, look wise, musicianship wise—he’s been the perfect fit.

MetalTitans: Before I let you go I have to ask you about the bonus content of the deluxe edition of The Killer Instinct. There’s some acoustic material featured in the second disc. Are those tracks recorded live in studio?

Ricky Warwick: That’s pretty much Damon and I. Damon and I writer everything on acoustic guitars. That’s how we write. It was us playing live on acoustic guitars and then we went back and threw a vocal over top of it. We tried to keep it as live as possible.
