CRITICS CLAIM ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME VOTING COMMITTEE IS “TOO MALE, TOO WHITE, TOO RICH”

ROCKNROLLHalof fame640 Rob Tannenbaum of Billboard reports:

When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee meets in New York every September, they nibble on sushi and Carnegie Deli sandwiches, and decide which artists to place on that year’s election ballot. The committee members — successful musicians, record executives, writers and historians — remain cordial even when they disagree, with one exception: the annual arguments that raged about KISS.

Whenever KISS was mentioned, “there were fireworks,” says one attendee. Several people in the room recall hearing the phrase “over my dead body.” Some on the committee see membership in the Rock Hall as the ultimate stamp of credibility; they viewed KISS, a popular and crass band, not with skepticism, but with disgust. Dave Marsh, an author and committee member, said KISS embodies “music at its most mercantile and shallow.” Then Tom Morello, from Rage Against the Machine, joined the committee as part of an effort to make it younger and more diverse (he’s African-American). At his first meeting, in 2013, he launched into what one witness calls “a rant” in praise of KISS. He persuaded the committee to nominate the band, and a few months later, welcomed KISS into the Hall of Fame.

…Because there’s little transparency in the [voting] process, conspiracy theories abound, especially ones that portray [Jan] Wenner as a puppet master. The Hall of Fame Foundation’s two staff members work in the offices of Wenner Media, and the foundation pays rent to Wenner Media for the space it uses. “Jann has completely taken over,” says a disillusioned committee member, pointing to Wenner’s influence on board membership and foundation employees. “He doesn’t try to rig anything, but it’s the Jann Wenner show.” Though Wenner is not on the nominating committee, it is stacked with current and former Rolling Stone writers and editors, which perpetuates the magazine’s vision of rock’s Great Works. “I understand the basis of [the conspiracy theories],” says Wenner, “but I don’t care about the speculation. After doing this for 30 years, nobody’s ever found any credible charge of chicanery or undue influence.”

..The committee has often been justly criticized for being homogenous — “too old, too male, too white, too rich,” says a former member. There are six women and seven people of color among the 41 members. In the last decade, “we’ve made a conscious effort to diversify it,” says Wenner. In 2006, several stalwarts were dethroned: “I was fired for being too old. That’s what I was told,” says one. (Wenner counters that anyone who was kicked off “wasn’t being useful.”) Younger members have been added, including Morello, 50, and The Roots drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, 44.

Morello’s successful advocacy for KISS shows how influential new members have been. In his first year, Questlove pushed pop act Hall & Oates onto the ballot, after others had tried and failed; “he worked the room like Frank Underwood works Congress,” one member says. And yet, the source adds, the balance of power is still with the elders: “Like anything boomer-centric, people are going to hold on to it as if their lives depend on it. You’ll have to pry the Hall of Fame from their cold, dead fingers.”

..Gene Simmons of KISS sums up the frequent criticism that the Hall neglects hard-rock and prog-rock bands. “Patti Smith is in before Deep Purple?” he exclaims. “Talking Heads, but not Yes? It started as a great idea, but it has become a sham.”

TESLA’S FRANK HANNON ON VAN HALEN’S NEW LIVE CD, “FOR THOSE WHO WANT PERFECT VOCALS, BUY A ONE DIRECTION LIVE ALBUM”

frankhannon-vh640 Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon has posted the following thoughts on his official website about Van Halen’s new live album, Live At The Tokyo Dome:

“Ok, after all the flames have settled down from people burning up David Lee Roth’s vocals on Jimmy Kimmel, here’s my thoughts on the new Van Halen: Live At The Tokyo Dome CD.

If you are a fan of truly “LIVE” albums as I am and have stated, this album rules! Just to hear Eddie’s guitar tones on Romeo’s Delight, Beautiful Girls, Women in Love alone is worth the $16. As for Dave, well he’s included a 6 page book with lyrics to read the words he don’t sing..and to hear him tell of the spotlight operator in Ice Cream Man is priceless, not to mention all the Japanese BS he rambles.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD while driving my 17 yr old to school this morning remembering hearing VH when I was his age and loving it!!!

For those of us who anxiously waited in line at Tower Records to get VHII, Women and Children First, and Fair Warning…this album will tickle your fancy…for those who want perfect vocals, buy a One Direction live album!!!”

Hannon currently has some live shows scheduled in support of his latest solo album, World Peace. See the dates below.

“THAT METAL SHOW” RETURNS WITH KERRY KING, LZZY HALE AND ZAKK WYLDE

Thatmetalshowlogo Episode 8 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming That Metal Show is the heaviest show of the season as Kerry King of Slayer returns. Kerry sits down with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine to discuss the upcoming Slayer album, getting the rust off for the upcoming summer tour, and even reveals some information about material for another record exclusively on the show.

The second guest on the episode welcomes Lzzy Hale of Halestorm to the set for the first time. Lzzy appeared on the show last season via the Metal Modem and talks about the new Halestorm album. They recorded the new album in a church in Nashville all playing together live, something they have never done before.

The episode features the debut of Zakk Wylde from Black Label Society as the guest musician. Zakk has been asked to perform on “That Metal Show” every season and finally in season 14, he obliged. Zakk wowed the crowd with playing abilities while showcasing his new custom audio equipment, Wylde Audio. In a first for the show, Zakk played out the final segment of the show with an extended off-the-cuff solo arrangement.

One of the episode highlights comes in the “Stump The Trunk” segment this week. The audience questions Eddie again, but this time also comes under fire with questions from Zakk himself, Joe Hottinger from Halestorm, and even Ed’s own mother gets a stump in. Take It Or Leave It returns this week with the hosts debating the recent announcement of Skid Row’s new singer and they offer up their favorite new releases in the Pick Of The Week. The TMS Top 5 looks at the Top 5 Zakk Wylde Songs and tracks like Miracle Man, No More Tears, In This River, and Stillborn all find their way in to the discussion.

Fans can watch all previous episodes, exclusive bonus clips and the new That After Show segment at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app.

BLACK SABBATH CANCELS OZZFEST JAPAN APPEARANCE , OZZY TO APPEAR AS A SOLO ACT INSTEAD

blacksabb2013 Despite last month’s announcement to the contrary, Black Sabbath will not be appearing at this year’s Ozzfest Japan, scheduled for November 21st-22nd at Makuhari Messe outside Tokyo, reports blabbermouth.net The show will instead feature a solo performance by singer Ozzy Osbourne, who will be accompanied by as-yet-undisclosed “friends.”

No reason was given for Sabbath’s withdrawal from the event.

Black Sabbath’s appearance at Ozzfest Japan was announced last month through a videotaped message from Osbourne’s wife and manager Sharon, who said, “Ozzfest will be back in Japan on November 21st and 22nd. And this will be Black Sabbath’s farewell. We’re also announcing KORN, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary. Now you can’t miss that.”

Sharon’s announcement didn’t exactly line up with the band’s previous plans to record a new album in 2015 and head out on one final tour before retiring, unless the band planned a summer release for the record and very limited touring until the last show in Japan. But, she most likely meant that this would be Sabbath’s last show ever in Japan — which she did not make clear on the video.

Three original members — Ozzy, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler — reunited in late 2011 to record their first album together in 35 years.

The project was hampered by drama over founding drummer Bill Ward’s last-minute decision not to participate, as well as Iommi’s battle with cancer.

The album, titled 13, came out in June 2013 and was the band’s first number one record in the U.S. ever. It was followed by a lengthy and wildly successful world tour.

Ozzy told The Pulse Of Radio at the time that he thought 13 was a great way for Sabbath to end its career if it didn’t make another album after that. “For whatever reason if we don’t do another studio album, this is where I would have liked to have been at the end of Sabbath, my days with Sabbath,” he said. “But life has a funny way of twisting things around, and if we do do another album, it’d be great, but if we don’t, this will be a nice way to round it off.”

He spoke to Metal Hammer last year, stating, “The whole Sabbath experience this time around was great. We all made friends, we didn’t f–k around, we all knew that we had a job to do, and we did it. It was a lot of fun. So we’re going to do one more album, and a final tour.”

It is not clear whether the band has begun writing a new album yet. Ozzy has also hinted at working on a solo album, and will do a residency in Las Vegas this October.

Iommi said in an interview earlier this year that touring had been “tough” on him while he underwent treatment for cancer at the same time.

Although he completed his treatment last summer, he admitted, “The surgeon told me he doesn’t expect the cancer to go away. There’s a 30 percent chance that it could, but more than likely, it will come back and it could be any time. I look at life differently now. I could be here another 10 years or just one year — I don’t know.”

AEROSMITH CELEBRATE THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF “TOYS IN THE ATTIC,” ANNOUNCE DATES FOR THEIR “BLUE ARMY TOUR”

aerosmith2-400 With Aerosmith set for another massive summer tour, the iconic and pioneering band has one more reason to celebrate in 2015: the 40th anniversary of the release of their landmark album Toys In The Attic. Released April 8, 1975 , the album was Aerosmith’s third release, becoming an eight-time platinum album and yielding such immortal tracks as Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion.

Beyond the critical acclaim Toys In The Attic generated, musicians have honored the work–which reached #11 on the Billboard album charts–by covering a variety of the album’s tracks. Most notably, Walk This Way, a 1986 Billboard Top 4 single collaboration with Run–D.M.C. and a pivotal song in the burgeoning rock-rap genre, featured Tyler (on co-lead vocals) and Perry (guitar). The track went on to become an international hit and earned both groups a Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap-Single (1987). In 1999, AEROSMITH and Run–D.M.C. teamed up again to perform the song, this time with Kid Rock at the MTV Video Music Awards. A few years later, Aerosmith again performed the song–accompanied by ‘NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly–to an international viewing audience as part of the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show (January 2001). Additional accolades for Walk This Way include inclusions in: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll; Rolling Stone ranked the original version of Walk This Way at #346 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, while the version with Run–D.M.C. is ranked at #293; “VH1: 100 Greatest Rock Songs” included Walk This Way at #35 (2000); Q magazine placed it at #23 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks (2005); Rolling Stone ranked the original version of Walk This Way at #34 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time (2008); VH1’s “100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs” included Walk This Way at #8 and VH1 ranked the version with Run–D.M.C. at #4 on VH1 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs (2009).

Other recorded covers from Toys In The Attic include R.E.M.’s 1986 version of Toys in the Attic, a B-side to “Fall on Me”; the track also appears on the band’s Dead Letter Office, as well as the 1993 reissue of Life’s Rich Pageant; The String Cheese Incident’s take on Walk This Way appears on the jam/bluegrass band’s 1997 self-titled live album A String Cheese Incident; and Boston ska band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones included Sweet Emotion on their EP Where’d You Go? Other cover versions include Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon, The Answer, Warrant and Ratt on Sweet Emotion; Velvet Revolver on No More No More; and Sum 41 along with rappers Ja Rule and Nelly on Walk This Way.

Up next for Aerosmith, beginning June 13th, the band will return to the road with their Blue Army Tour 2015. It will take the band’s all original members–Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford–to 15 cities before concluding in Grand Rapids, MI on Tuesday, August 4th. Immediately following the tour, Aerosmith will perform on Friday, August 7th at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first-ever Concert for Legends. The concert–part of the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival–will pay tribute to the legends of the game on the eve of the Enshrinement for the Class of 2015.

DECEASED GWAR FRONTMAN DAVE BROCKIE’S FATHER CLAIMS THE BAND STOLE HIS ASHES AND OTHER ITEMS

gwar400 New York Post‘s Page Six reports:

The father of Dave Brockie, the frontman for the heavy metal band Gwar, who died last year of heroin overdose, says in a lawsuit that the band stole his ashes and many of his possessions. William Brockie filed the lawsuit Thursday against businesses operated by the thrash metal band GWAR in Richmond, Virginia.

GWAR founder and frontman Dave Brockie died without leaving a will, and his father was named administrator of his estate.

According to the lawsuit, the band had its leader cremated and gave his father only a fraction of his ashes “in a used plastic bag with a Discover credit card logo on it.”

William Brockie also says the band has locked up items belonging to the estate, including his son’s guitars, artwork and a gold record.

The band issued a statement Tuesday denying the allegations.
