CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE PENS AN OPEN LETTER TO AC/DC’S ANGUS YOUNG, WRITES “LOSING BRIAN [JOHNSON] IS A BLOW TO [THE FANS]

Scott Rowley of Classic Rock writes:

Dear Angus,

Let’s face it: you are AC/DC now, and with great powerage comes great responsibility.

I mean, we get it: because of all the money AC/DC make, it might be easy to mistake them for just another corporation – a big brand with shareholders and a CEO who’s able to fire the MD if he’s not performing, and replace him with someone else and just carry on, business as usual.

But AC/DC is not Carphone Warehouse.

You are not a service provider and we are not just customers. Collectively, your millions of fans have invested more than money in this band – in loving the music, buying the records, going to the gigs – they’ve invested decades. We’ve put our heart and soul into this. You have what other brands would kill for: fully engaged and loyal customers.

So try and understand: losing Brian is a blow to us. You’ve probably known about it for a while. You saw it it coming, had time to get over it. But for the thousands of people who’ve bought tickets to what’s felt like the band’s last tour (what with Malcolm gone, Phil under house arrest, the relentless march of time), this is a shock.

That the only message from the DC camp has been, effectively, that “the show must go on” and “We thank Brian for his services, but meet the new guy – cough! – Axl” seems insensitive. It fails to recognise the hearts that have been broken. It misses the point. We don’t just want ANY old “AC/DC” up there. We want our boys.

We depend on Brian Johnson up there. I mean, we LOVE you too. No getting away from that. You’re the main man! And we had our hesitations about Beano at first. Bon’s shoes were hard to fill, but you choose well. He had the voice and he had that down-to-earth, one-of-the-boys, here-for-the-craic vibe. You knew he was the kind of guy who’d get his round in. He earned his spot. It was like when your favourite striker gets dropped and replaced by some fancy-dan wanker from another team… but then starts knocking in the goals. Jonno’s been knocking them in for decades now – for most of our lives.

So it hurts, and you probably hate all this s–t because you’re Scottish (so am I! I’m writing this in the back of a taxi ten minutes drive from where you and Malcolm were born!) but we need closure.

If that sounds wanky, put it another way. In football they have testimonials. In fact, even if you worked in a fucking factory, down the power station, whatever, they’d still have a leaving do for you. Everyone would chip-in to buy you a present, slip cheeky vodkas in yer Guinness and make sure you you left in style.

Don’t deny us that. Don’t deny us the chance to say goodbye. This is not the same as Bon. This is a guy who’s still living and breathing.

Here’s how you can rescue this:

1. Brian needs a leaving do.

2. You’re about to put on a travelling party that covers two continents. Turn it into a celebration.

3. If you’re nervous about calling it a Farewell Tour, make it a “farewell to Brian tour.” Brian’s comment that Rock Or Bust was going to be called “Man Down” in reference to Malcolm was perfect. He GOT IT. That would’ve been beautiful. You could go one better…

4. Turn this tour into a testimonial for Brian, and a belated goodbye to Malcolm (f–k it, go the whole hog: take the time to doff your cap to Bon too – get someone to put together a film of Bon to play during It’s A Long Way to The Top or, funnier, Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be).

5. Get Brian on for a song or two. Imagine. People would lose their s–t if Back In Black started up and Beano came walking out.

6. Brian can’t sing? Bring him along anyway. In fact, bring Malcolm too.

7. Test case: A few years ago, Mott The Hoople reunited. It was a reunion long in the making and by the time it happened their drummer Dale “Buffin” Griffin was suffering from Alzheimer’s and was unable to drum. So they got Martin Chambers in and then for the last two songs each night, Buffin came out and joined in: two drummers. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

8. If Brian genuinely can’t sing? Get him to come out and say some words. It’ll bring down the house.

9. Get him to come out with Malcolm. Malc doesn’t have to say anything. Let Jonno do the talking. Just give us the opportunity to say goodbye.

10. Does that sound maudlin? Then you’re missing the point. AC/DC don’t do maudlin, I get that. Self-pity is not a part of the AC/DC Universe.

11. That’s why you turn it in to a party. That’s something you know all about.

12. Think about this: when you joined Guns N’ Roses onstage the other day it was the most exciting part of their reunion gig.

13. Imagine pulling that trick here. Bring on guests. You must’ve read some of what the internet’s saying. Imagine if you pulled out Angry Anderson for a song! People would lose their minds.

14. Get Joel from Airbourne up for a number – it’d be like having TWO Anguses on stage.

15. You’re playing Switzerland. Bring on Marc Storage.

16. Bring up different guests for each date, each country. Taylor f–ing Swift did it – you don’t think you can?

17. Get Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell up and give Lemmy a nod.

18. Drag Scott Gorham up – Tom Hamilton’s playing for Lizzy this year. Layer on the stars and the tributes. We’ll go nuts if you do even 20 seconds of The Boys Are Back In Town or Walk This Way, c’mon.

19. Get Slash and Duff to return the Coachella favor. Let them do Welcome To The Jungle with Axl while you have a five minute break.

20. Think big. Get a f–king pop star or two up. I know it doesn’t sound right – I’m not talking any f–king Joe Schmo off the X Factor – it’d have to be the right person. I saw Slash play with Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas once: she was killer. Get a woman up there. Sex it up a bit. You’re one of the raunchiest bands of all time. It doesn’t have to be a boys club.

I’m not saying turn it into a tribute act. I’m saying make them THE ULTIMATE AC/DC GIGS EVER!

Keep people guessing, get them excited, give us a wake for AC/DC – for Brian, for Malc, for Bon – give us the best party we can possibly imagine, go out in style, go out like legends, and please, please, if we must have him, just give us a break from Axl every now and again. He does my head in.

PS: Don’t worry about a leaving card for Brian – we’ll sort it.

Love,

Your fans.

GLENN HUGHES SAYS AN UNAMED MEMBER OF DEEP PURPLE KEPT BOTH HE, AND DAVID COVERDALE, FROM PERFORMING AT THE ROCK HALL INDUCTION

Former Deep Purple member Glenn Hughes says an unnamed member of the current lineup prevented him, and David Coverdale, from being part of the group’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction performance.

Hughes recently told Metal Rules, saying, “I’m not going to name names, as there is a member who didn’t feel it was appropriate that we should sing. So, David and I braved it together as we were arm and arm all the way through. But, I knew by the end of the night it would not happen.”

Pointing out that the duo ended up onstage anyway thanks to an invitation from Cheap Trick, Hughes insisted there were no hard feelings. “Am I upset about not singing with Deep Purple? Not at all. Everybody knows that David and I can sing. Everybody knows that we were in the band. All that mattered to me was accepting the award on behalf of Deep Purple and the fans.”

Hughes went on to address the elephant in the room regarding Deep Purple’s induction: the absence of former guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who’s long been on less than friendly terms with some of his former bandmates. Saying Blackmore never had any intention of making an appearance, Hughes added that his refusal to attend didn’t have anything to do with bad blood — he just wasn’t interested in showing up.

“Nobody stopped him, and you can’t stop an artist from getting inducted unless the chairman of the Hall of Fame bans you. The chairman of the Hall of Fame reached out to Ritchie with both hands, and Ritchie gracefully declined,” said Hughes. “He didn’t say anything bad. He just said, ‘Thank you. I’m not going to attend.’ People need to know it was gracefully done.”

BRET MICHAELS TELLS EDDIE TRUNK THAT HE WOULD STILL LIKE TO WORK WITH POISON, BUT IT IS CONTINGENT ON DRUMMER RIKKI ROCKETT’S HEALTH

Bret Michaels is still hoping to work with Poison, but first, he wants to make sure drummer Rikki Rockett is 100 percent healthy after his recent cancer scare.

“Right now we’ve all got a prayer out for Rikki and his health; we hope that it’s great. And that’s number one — for our drummer and his health and his kids and everything,” Michaels told Eddie Trunk. “He’s working really hard at [his treatment]. And you know the combination — it’s grace of God and good medical attention and taking care of himself. But I think if all goes great, which it will, I’m hoping in the very near future — I don’t wanna say a date — we go out there and do some amazing shows together.”

While offering enthusiasm for the prospect of more Poison activity, Michaels conceded the possibility that the band might have played its last show — and insisted he’s totally at peace with the idea. “I’m thankful for every minute I have had and will have. I’m not one of those guys, I’m not a bitter guy,” he added. “I’m happy for what I’ve got and the amazing time we had together, and hopefully we’ll continue to do it in the future. But if not, it was a great journey and a great time.”
That said, Michaels insisted he “1,000 percent” expects another round of Poison activity at some point. “I still consider ’em great friends. We’ve been through a lot together,” he told Trunk. “I still see something amazing happening.”

AC/DC’S BRIAN JOHNSON RELEASES A STATEMENT REGARDING HIS DEPARTURE FROM THE BAND, WRITES “I AM NOT RETIRING”

Longtime AC/DC singer Brian Johnson has issued a statement explaining his recent battle with hearing loss, and clarifying the circumstances of his departure from the legendary Australian group’s current world tour.

Last month, AC/DC were forced to postpone the last 10 U.S. dates on their Rock or Bust world tour after doctors told Johnson he faced “total hearing loss” if he performed with the group again. At the time, the band promised it would make up the shows, “likely with a guest vocalist.”

After weeks of speculation and rumors, this past weekend AC/DC announced that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose would join them for the remaining dates of the tour. In that press statement, the group also wished Johnson well with his “future ventures,” strongly indicating but not flat out stating that his time with the group was over.

Johnson has now explained his version of all this upheaval with a statement. Here is his statement in full:

“As many AC/DC fans know, the remaining shows for the 2016 AC/DC Rock or Bust World Tour, including 10 postponed U.S. shows, are being rescheduled with a guest singer. I want personally to explain the reason because I don’t believe the earlier press releases sufficiently set out what I wanted to say to our fans or the way in which I thought it should be presented.

On March 7th, after a series of examinations by leading physicians in the field of hearing loss, I was advised that if I continue to perform at large venues, I risked total deafness. While I was horrified at the reality of the news that day, I had for a time become aware that my partial hearing loss was beginning to interfere with my performance on stage. I was having difficulty hearing the guitars on stage and because I was not able to hear the other musicians clearly, I feared the quality of my performance could be compromised. In all honesty this was something I could not in good conscience allow. Our fans deserve my performance to be at the highest level, and if for any reason I can’t deliver that level of performance I will not disappoint our fans or embarrass the other members of AC/DC. I am not a quitter and I like to finish what I start, nevertheless, the doctors made it clear to me and my bandmates that I had no choice but to stop performing on stage for the remaining shows and possibly beyond. That was the darkest day of my professional life.

Since that day, I have had several consultations with my doctors and it appears that, for the near future, I will be unable to perform on stage at arena and stadium size venues where the sound levels are beyond my current tolerance, without the risk of substantial hearing loss and possibly total deafness. Until that time, I tried as best as I could to continue despite the pain and hearing loss but it all became too much to bear and too much to risk.

I am personally crushed by this development more than anyone could ever imagine. The emotional experience I feel now is worse than anything I have ever in my life felt before. Being part of AC/DC, making records and performing for the millions of devoted fans this past 36 years has been my life’s work. I cannot imagine going forward without being part of that, but for now I have no choice. The one thing for certain is that I will always be with AC/DC at every show in spirit, if not in person.

Most importantly, I feel terrible having to disappoint the fans who bought tickets for the canceled shows and who have steadfastly supported me and AC/DC these many years. Words cannot express my deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks not just for the recent outpouring to me personally of kind words and good wishes, but also for the years of loyal support of AC/DC. My thanks also go to Angus and Cliff for their support.

Finally, I wish to assure our fans that I am not retiring. My doctors have told me that I can continue to record in studios and I intend to do that. For the moment, my entire focus is to continue medical treatment to improve my hearing. I am hoping that in time my hearing will improve and allow me to return to live concert performances. While the outcome is uncertain, my attitude is optimistic. Only time will tell.

Once again, my sincere best wishes and thanks to everyone for their support and understanding.

Love,
Brian”
