NEW BOOK BY GREG PRATO EXAMINES ROCKS MOST NEGLECTED ALBUMS

gregpratobook400 It seems like the days of flipping through vast vinyl, cassette, or CD collections is a thing of the past. And while there’s no denying the convenience of having all your favorite albums on a mobile device, it’s becoming more common for recordings to get lost in the shuffle and/or completely forgotten about.

Author/journalist Greg Prato is willing to provide some assistance, with his 12th book overall, Overlooked/Underappreciated: 354 Recordings That Demand Your Attention. Inside, you will find countless albums that you may have completely forgotten about or perhaps have never even heard of before.

Starting with AC/DC’s Flick of the Switch and wrapping up with Zombi’s Surface to Air, countless styles of music are represented in between – rock n’ roll, hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, new wave, punk, hardcore, grunge, jazz, fusion, psychedelic, prog, folk, blues, funk, soul, rap, spoken word, power pop, big band, glam, experimental, instrumental, soundtracks…the list goes on and on. But the selections stay strong!

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist, whose writing has appearing in Rolling Stone, among other outlets. He is also the author of several acclaimed books, including Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music, A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon, The Eric Carr Story, and MTV Ruled the World: The Early Years of Music Video, among others.

Now available as paperback ($12.99, 256 pages), Kindle ($9.99, 287 pages), and Nook.

7/11: BACK ON AAF/BOSTON TONIGHT, AEROSMITH, SLASH, MORE

My FM/syndicated show returns to WAAF/Boston tonight! Very cool and very important to have a major station and city back on board with my show and I am appreciative of all the Boston rock fans for the support. The show airs on AAF every Friday 11P-2A ET and can also be streamed at www.waaf.com . The show now airs there the same time as the airing on Q104.3 NYC. It is the same show. All stations that air my program now air the same show every weekend. No more delays. Thanks to AAF and all the stations that believe in bringing my mix of hard rock and metal for three hours a week! I’ll be in Boston 8/1 hosting Winery Dogs and then doing my own gig with Don & Jim 8/2. Both events are at The Wilbur Theater. See you there soon.

Headed to Myrtle Beach soon. See you THIS Wednesday 5-7P at Retroactive. Both books signed and sold and event is free.

Great time last night at Jones Beach NY for the start of the Aerosmith/Slash tour. Great bill! Slash and the guys opened with an hour set of solo, GnR and a VR tunes. Unfortunately the doors opened just after 7 and the band went on at 7:30 so not many in the building for the start, but it filled in a bit later. Love what Slash has been doing with this band. Set also included one new song. They are out all Summer and also will do headline shows on nights off with Aerosmith. New album out in Sept.

What can I say about Aerosmith I haven’t already? They are one of my all time favorite bands. Grew up with the Live Bootleg poster on my wall! To see a band 40 plus years on, still the same 5 guys, and most importantly STILL great playing and singing, is truly a rarity! And it’s all real. No tracks or trickery. Tyler remains one of the all time great singers and performers. Amazing what this guy can do in his mid 60’s. He hits every note in many ways better than he used to because he is sober. Aerosmith has so many mega hits from so many decades they could easily do an all hits set. But even though many are in the set they always through some deep cuts in for the hardcore. Those cuts last night that had me losing it were “Kings & Queens” and “Chip Away The Stone”. Tyler hit every note in Kings! The high parts and all, amazing! Never thought I would see that live even though Joey Kramer promised it on my show Monday. And Aerosmith did a 2 hour plus set. Crazy. A great night of hard rock music. You have to savor what’s left from the icons of rock. Nobody getting any younger. But what Aerosmith does in this day and age of sampling, short sets and diluted lineups is truly remarkable and rare for a band in its fifth decade!

Again huge thanks to all that made my debut podcast such a huge hit! Top 10 was beyond my wildest expectations. The cool thing about podcasts is they are always there to grab even as new ones post. New one for me will post every Thursday. Grab the Priest debut now on Itunes or at www.podcastone.com Next Thursday guest is Bobby Blitz of Overkill.

Have a good weekend. I’ll be in S Carolina Monday so SiriusXM show is pre recorded this week coming up.

PLEASE DON’T CALL THE CULT “CLASSIC ROCK”

thecult400 The Cult’s frontman Ian Astbury does not like the term classic rock and says it has marginalized certain bands.

The outspoken frontman is preparing for a North American tour with The Cult, but does not want to be branded a classic rock band.

The singer tells the Vancouver Sun, “I despise the term classic rock. Whoever came up with that should be publicly shamed. It may be convenient for VH1 or certain publications, but this particular period of rock music has become nothing more than a scrap yard for ironic T-shirts. It has been marginalized and pushed into a certain space, and that’s unfortunate. There’s so many artists still making vital music.”

The Cult are working on their 10th album, and first since 2012’s Choice Of Weapon. But Astbury is thankful of a break from the studio to hit the road.

He adds, “The Cult started as a live band. The idea of making records was a fantasy – that was something someone else did. We had done hundreds of shows before we even had the chance to make a record, so a chemistry evolves. We’ve got to play. It’s our lifeblood.”

7/10: DEBUT PODCAST NOW LIVE. MORE

My debut podcast is now live and available free worldwide via Itunes and www.podcastone.com . Thanks for all the great early response and thanks to Judas Priest for being my first ever guests. Hard to ask for more than the metal Gods! Since it has now launched you can subscribe to get them sent every week to your device. This is all new to me and I’m learning as I go but so far it’s a fun new addition. Also we had some issues with the audio of the interview with Priest. Did the best we could to salvage. Future interviews will not sound like that. But content is king and thought it best to run anyway. New episodes will post every Thursday. Please note this is a talk only format. No music is allowed due to publishing laws. Thanks for all the support and hope you guys like what’s coming.

Just took my kids to see Katy Perry at MSG. Although not my music I must say it was a massive production in the sold out arena and I give her credit for putting on a great show and really singing and writing her songs. Hoping my kids get more into rock as they get older but won’t force them. I also know when I was their age I was into pop too. So we will see.

Lots of debate on this site on all sides about the eventual no original Kiss members discussion. Mostly all of it has been intelligent and interesting. For those that accuse me of posting dated news to “stir the pot” (I already admitted I didn’t know it was from ’08 at the time) you may want to realize that Paul also said this would happen THIS YEAR. Several times including on Ron & Fez and in RS. Amazing to some I can be the enemy for discussing a topic THEY said they would eventually do! If people got this crazy at the discussion can’t wait to see what happens when they actually do it. And somehow some will find a way to blame me for that too. Scary!

Tonight I took the kids to see Katy Perry, tomorrow night is my night to go see JOE PERRY and Aerosmith! This Perry a bit more my scene haha. And look forward to seeing Slash and the guys as well. Slash wrote the forward for my second book and always good to see him and hang with the guys. Reports from that show tomorrow via Twitter @EddieTrunk

Don’t forget I am back on AAF/Boston THIS Friday 11P ET and every Friday!

Book signing and selling THIS Wednesday at Retroactive Myrtle Beach SC 5-7P.

I’ll be hosting the Winery Dogs in Boston at The Wilbur Theater 8/1 and then me, Don and Jim perform there 8/2.
