BLACK SABBATH CANCELS OZZFEST JAPAN APPEARANCE , OZZY TO APPEAR AS A SOLO ACT INSTEAD

blacksabb2013 Despite last month’s announcement to the contrary, Black Sabbath will not be appearing at this year’s Ozzfest Japan, scheduled for November 21st-22nd at Makuhari Messe outside Tokyo, reports blabbermouth.net The show will instead feature a solo performance by singer Ozzy Osbourne, who will be accompanied by as-yet-undisclosed “friends.”

No reason was given for Sabbath’s withdrawal from the event.

Black Sabbath’s appearance at Ozzfest Japan was announced last month through a videotaped message from Osbourne’s wife and manager Sharon, who said, “Ozzfest will be back in Japan on November 21st and 22nd. And this will be Black Sabbath’s farewell. We’re also announcing KORN, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary. Now you can’t miss that.”

Sharon’s announcement didn’t exactly line up with the band’s previous plans to record a new album in 2015 and head out on one final tour before retiring, unless the band planned a summer release for the record and very limited touring until the last show in Japan. But, she most likely meant that this would be Sabbath’s last show ever in Japan — which she did not make clear on the video.

Three original members — Ozzy, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler — reunited in late 2011 to record their first album together in 35 years.

The project was hampered by drama over founding drummer Bill Ward’s last-minute decision not to participate, as well as Iommi’s battle with cancer.

The album, titled 13, came out in June 2013 and was the band’s first number one record in the U.S. ever. It was followed by a lengthy and wildly successful world tour.

Ozzy told The Pulse Of Radio at the time that he thought 13 was a great way for Sabbath to end its career if it didn’t make another album after that. “For whatever reason if we don’t do another studio album, this is where I would have liked to have been at the end of Sabbath, my days with Sabbath,” he said. “But life has a funny way of twisting things around, and if we do do another album, it’d be great, but if we don’t, this will be a nice way to round it off.”

He spoke to Metal Hammer last year, stating, “The whole Sabbath experience this time around was great. We all made friends, we didn’t f–k around, we all knew that we had a job to do, and we did it. It was a lot of fun. So we’re going to do one more album, and a final tour.”

It is not clear whether the band has begun writing a new album yet. Ozzy has also hinted at working on a solo album, and will do a residency in Las Vegas this October.

Iommi said in an interview earlier this year that touring had been “tough” on him while he underwent treatment for cancer at the same time.

Although he completed his treatment last summer, he admitted, “The surgeon told me he doesn’t expect the cancer to go away. There’s a 30 percent chance that it could, but more than likely, it will come back and it could be any time. I look at life differently now. I could be here another 10 years or just one year — I don’t know.”

AEROSMITH CELEBRATE THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF “TOYS IN THE ATTIC,” ANNOUNCE DATES FOR THEIR “BLUE ARMY TOUR”

aerosmith2-400 With Aerosmith set for another massive summer tour, the iconic and pioneering band has one more reason to celebrate in 2015: the 40th anniversary of the release of their landmark album Toys In The Attic. Released April 8, 1975 , the album was Aerosmith’s third release, becoming an eight-time platinum album and yielding such immortal tracks as Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion.

Beyond the critical acclaim Toys In The Attic generated, musicians have honored the work–which reached #11 on the Billboard album charts–by covering a variety of the album’s tracks. Most notably, Walk This Way, a 1986 Billboard Top 4 single collaboration with Run–D.M.C. and a pivotal song in the burgeoning rock-rap genre, featured Tyler (on co-lead vocals) and Perry (guitar). The track went on to become an international hit and earned both groups a Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap-Single (1987). In 1999, AEROSMITH and Run–D.M.C. teamed up again to perform the song, this time with Kid Rock at the MTV Video Music Awards. A few years later, Aerosmith again performed the song–accompanied by ‘NSYNC, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly–to an international viewing audience as part of the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show (January 2001). Additional accolades for Walk This Way include inclusions in: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll; Rolling Stone ranked the original version of Walk This Way at #346 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, while the version with Run–D.M.C. is ranked at #293; “VH1: 100 Greatest Rock Songs” included Walk This Way at #35 (2000); Q magazine placed it at #23 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks (2005); Rolling Stone ranked the original version of Walk This Way at #34 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time (2008); VH1’s “100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs” included Walk This Way at #8 and VH1 ranked the version with Run–D.M.C. at #4 on VH1 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs (2009).

Other recorded covers from Toys In The Attic include R.E.M.’s 1986 version of Toys in the Attic, a B-side to “Fall on Me”; the track also appears on the band’s Dead Letter Office, as well as the 1993 reissue of Life’s Rich Pageant; The String Cheese Incident’s take on Walk This Way appears on the jam/bluegrass band’s 1997 self-titled live album A String Cheese Incident; and Boston ska band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones included Sweet Emotion on their EP Where’d You Go? Other cover versions include Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon, The Answer, Warrant and Ratt on Sweet Emotion; Velvet Revolver on No More No More; and Sum 41 along with rappers Ja Rule and Nelly on Walk This Way.

Up next for Aerosmith, beginning June 13th, the band will return to the road with their Blue Army Tour 2015. It will take the band’s all original members–Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford–to 15 cities before concluding in Grand Rapids, MI on Tuesday, August 4th. Immediately following the tour, Aerosmith will perform on Friday, August 7th at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first-ever Concert for Legends. The concert–part of the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival–will pay tribute to the legends of the game on the eve of the Enshrinement for the Class of 2015.

DECEASED GWAR FRONTMAN DAVE BROCKIE’S FATHER CLAIMS THE BAND STOLE HIS ASHES AND OTHER ITEMS

gwar400 New York Post‘s Page Six reports:

The father of Dave Brockie, the frontman for the heavy metal band Gwar, who died last year of heroin overdose, says in a lawsuit that the band stole his ashes and many of his possessions. William Brockie filed the lawsuit Thursday against businesses operated by the thrash metal band GWAR in Richmond, Virginia.

GWAR founder and frontman Dave Brockie died without leaving a will, and his father was named administrator of his estate.

According to the lawsuit, the band had its leader cremated and gave his father only a fraction of his ashes “in a used plastic bag with a Discover credit card logo on it.”

William Brockie also says the band has locked up items belonging to the estate, including his son’s guitars, artwork and a gold record.

The band issued a statement Tuesday denying the allegations.

DRUMMER MIKE PORTNOY COMMENTS ON TOURING WITH TWISTED SISTER, TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

mikepornoy As previously reported, Twisted Sister has announced a farewell tour called Forty and F**k It, which will include drummer Mike Portnoy (Winery Dogs, ex Dream Theater and Adrenaline Mob) honoring the recently departed A.J. Pero.

Portnoy said, “As a teenager growing up on Long Island in the late 70’s/early 80’s, Twister Sister were local legends to me (this was years before the rest of the world discovered them via MTV). Along with KISS and The Ramones, they are the quintessential New York band…true Empire State Rock & Roll Royalty! Almost 40 years and 10,000 gigs later, they are still one of the greatest live bands on earth and Dee Snider one of the greatest frontmen in the history of Rock. When their fallen brother AJ Pero tragically passed away last month, I didn’t hesitate a single moment when asked if I could help out with the remaining shows on their calendar. Not only because I love the band and will always be an S.M.F. at heart…but most importantly, because AJ was my friend and I want to honor his memory and the band’s legacy. It’s a strange twist of fate as AJ had stepped in and helped my old band (Adrenaline Mob) when I left…so I’m glad that I can now return the favor and help out his band in their time of need! It is my absolute honor to help out my fellow Long Island Rock & Roll Saviors, Twisted Fucking Sister!”

Twisted Sister tour dates with Mike Portnoy:

May 30th – Las Vegas, NV – The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel
June 13th – Sayreville, NJ – Starland Ballroom
June 19th – Halden, Norway – Tons Of Rock Festival
June 20th – Horsens, Denmark – State Prison Motorcycle Festival

July 24th – Barcelona, Spain – Rock Fest

IRON MAIDEN REMASTER ALBUMS FOR ITUNES

IRON MAIDEN ft Lauderdale 2010 Nineteen Iron Maiden albums have been remastered especially for iTunes.

Parlophone Records announced the move, which sees 15 studio albums, two best-of compilations and two live records remastered from their original analogue sources.

Bassist and founding member Steve Harris says, “The Mastering For iTunes procedure allows the listener to experience the music as close as possible to the way the artist intended it to be heard. So, of course, I was very keen for the Maiden albums to be mastered in this way. The records have been available digitally before, when this medium first became a platform for music distribution, but that was mastered with CDs in mind. The iTunes process involves a different approach and it’s great to finally deliver the music to our fans in as close to a pure and accurate sound as we could possibly achieve. For example, as most people know, I was never really happy with the sound on the first Maiden album, but listening to it now, the guitars are louder, the drums more substantial and the overall tone is so very much improved, in my opinion.”

He continues, “Tony Newton and Ade Emsley, who worked closely with me on the project, did a terrific job recapturing everything from the original masters, and together we’ve re- mastered them all digitally and I’m really happy with the results.”

Fans can download the albums now from iTunes.

Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson confirmed in February he was undergoing treatment for cancer. Last month he said his latest meeting with doctors revealed his treatment was going well and that he was on course for a full recovery.

Iron Maiden iTunes remasters include:

Iron Maiden
Killers
The Number Of The Beast
Piece Of Mind
Powerslave
Somewhere In Time
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
No Prayer For The Dying
Fear Of The Dark
The X Factor
Virtual XI
Brave New World
Dance Of Death
A Matter Of Life And Death
The Final Frontier
Somewhere Back In Time
From Fear To Eternity (2CD)
Live After Death (2CD)
Rock In Rio (2CD)
