ANTHRAX GUITARIST SCOTT IAN DEFENDS KISS’ DECISION NOT TO PLAY AT THE ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME CEREMONY

scottian650 According to blabbermouth.net, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has defended KISS’ Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons for their announcement that no members of KISS will be playing at the April 10th Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in Brooklyn.

Speaking to Rover’s Morning Glory, a syndicated hot-talk/comedy radio show airing weekday mornings on Cleveland rock station WMMS (100.7 FM), Ian joked, “Look, I’ve got Gene Simmons tattooed on my leg, so whatever Gene says is what goes.”

He continued, “I’m a [KISS] fan, just like everyone else, and would I wanna see, if I was going… I’m not going to the Hall Of Fame thing, so would I wanna see the four original dudes back in makeup one more time? Of course I would, as a fan. But bands don’t do things dictated by what the audience wants. A band would last about a year if that’s how you worked. You have to do things the way you wanna do them.

KISS has been around for 40 years and are bigger now than they were in 1977 because Gene and Paul make smart decisions — that’s why. So, as a fan, and if you love them, you have to abide by the decisions that Gene and Paul are making for their brand and their band. So, why people get so upset over these things, I really don’t understand. Like, if they decided they were playing with [current KISS members] Tommy [Thayer, guitar] and Eric [Singer, drums], so fine. That’s what they’re doing. This is their band. This has been the lineup for a long time now.

I get it — those two guys [Tommy and Eric] aren’t the guys who are getting into the Hall Of Fame [with Paul and Gene], it’s Ace and Peter… you know, I get it. So I think they made the right decision now by saying, ‘We’re just not gonna play. You can’t please everybody. We’re just gonna shut it down and just not do it.’ I get it. I understand.”

  1. KISS is touring the world now which they only did on a limited basis in the 70s. You’d really have to do a numbers by numbers comparison to see when their global audience was larger. They’re also selling merchandise on a global scale now. That’s arguably not part of the music but if you’re not a KISS fan, you’re probably not buying a Hello Kitty calendar. I got one on sale. It’s kind of cool.

  2. Lets all be thankful we won’t have to witness the site of Paul Stanley prancing around like a fairy while performing in front of his peers at the RRHOF, I mean it might even embarrass Gene for christ sake!!

    1. Once Kiss is said and done, maybe Paul will finally come out since he won’t have to worry about how it might affect the band or the brand at that point. If anything, Rob Halford proved to the world that a guy of this musical genre can come out and still be respected all the same. As oblivious as I was like most fans to the Halford thing back in the day, the same goes with Paul Stanley. Though just like with Rob, it’s now so obvious when looking back on Stanley. Even for 80’s hard rock (or the dreaded “hair band” label that is often used), anyone with any acquired gaydar bestowed upon us from the Halford thing can see it jumping out at you with Paul now. All anyone has to do is go back and watch the Tears Are Falling or Let’s Put The X In Sex videos to see what I’m saying. Sure they put chicks in the videos and Paul had them sprawled on his bed in the Extreme Closeup home video, but now I know why this guy always seemed to push the whole being a stud thing so hard, when usually it’s the guys that aren’t the ones getting it that need to talk about it or try and show it the most. No doubt Paul was the chick magnet sort of guy, but I think it’s rather obvious now where his preferences stand on that subject. Not that any of this matters, but it’s more of yet another example that if Paul can’t admit this, then there’s no way he’s ever going to admit the original band was bigger or give it the proper due like performing with them at the HOF anytime soon.

    2. That “prancing around like a fairy” made him a rich rock legend. And how much are they paying you at your job at the mall while you strut around with your masculine gait?

  3. This really isn’t that big if a deal. I’m sure it’s great for ratings and promotion, but seriously, it’s not a big deal. I love KISS, but I’m glad the fans don’t manage the band. I love Pete and Ace, their time came and went, more than once. KISS is Gene and Paul, legally and otherwise. The band has a strong line up and I’m glad they still tour. I’ll see them every time, because no one does it like they do. No one. I sure wish Pete and Ace were still there, but I’m not going to cry because they’re not. I wish they were never inducted into the RRHOF, whatever that even means. When I see this version of KISS it still takes me back to my youth and I ride the wave of nostalgia and have a blast. I hope they keep doing it for years to come.

  4. 15 bucks, get a crappy homemade CD then get a picture with an ugly guy lost in ’92 and 5 feet 2 and thinks he might get Anthrax to be the third at some casino. I saw Kiss & The Crue in a field near Grand Junction Colorado. Anything for a buck, the cows loved it over the fence, saw a lot of cows in the audience too. Thayer & Singer get squat…it is a two horse group in the $ department. Plant in a Tone Loc voice: “Lets Do It!, Rose Bowl, 5 nights in October on top of the remaster releases” breaking on Trunk.

    1. ANGRIEST POST EVER! Thank God February is over. Priceless TONE LOC reference. Did Scott ever represent THE LOLLIPOP GUILD?
