4/19: YOUR QUESTIONS ON THAT METAL SHOW ANSWERED HERE

So with a new season of TMS upon us I get a TON of questions and comments and just not enough time to respond to every single one. And then if I do and it’s brief people think I’m rude. Some times you can not win LOL. Many times it is the same questions over and over, or guest requests when people just don’t get the process. I thank you all for watching and your support. So once again here are answers to frequently asked questions, hope this helps:

Why is the show shot in LA?

That is where 95% of the music world lives, easier to get guests.

Why doesn’t the show go on the road?

Costs money we don’t have. The show is on VH1 CLASSIC, not VH1. HUGE difference in budgets!

Why are there no band performances?

See above. Music costs money.

Why isn’t this band on TMS?

Probably the most non stop thing I see on this site and the comments area and on Twitter is on guests and guest requests. I appreciate the passion but so many have no clue of the process, that VH1 has ultimate say, and that the show is mostly a classic based program, although we certainly mix in newer bands when we can. What blows my mind is when people write to say “have Eddie Van Halen on”. You think it’s that easy? You think we haven’t tried EVERY season! Some guys are just reclusive and will not do interviews, especially on a show that REALLY knows their history. Most would rather go somewhere to plug something quick from a host or news anchor that only knows whats on the latest bio sheet. We ask EVH EVERY season, as do we ask EVERY major artist that has not been on. They have to want to do the show! You guys bug them for us if you want. Another obstacle; bands tour! We shoot 8 shows in 4 days coming up. Bands are on tour more than ever. They aren’t going to cancel dates to do a TV show. Also an amazing amount of requests for bands that have been on. I generally don’t acknowledge guest requests because it’s so endless and crazy and I do NOT 100% control it, although I have a say. I appreciate all the passion and we have had a TON of major guests on, but it’s not as easy as saying; “have _____ on”.

Why are some guests repeated?

Name a talk show on radio or TV that doesn’t welcome guests back on? Especially one that has as few new shows a year as us. By the way, the new season is over 50% first time guests.

Why don’t you do more new shows than 8?

I’d do it every day! The network has the budgets. All comes down to $$$.

Why isn’t VH1 Classic in HD?

I wish it was! Can not answer that. Up to the network.

Will the show come out on DVD?

Again, VH1 owns the show, up to them, but there are some talks now.

Why isn’t the show available online or seen in my country?

Wish it was EVERYWHERE. Have no control over distribution, all up to where VH1 has deals and internet laws.

How can I be in the audience?

Our audience space is very limited. Tickets are handled by a casting agency. I have nothing to do with it and no knowledge of how it works. But hope to see you if you got in.

I’m sure I missed stuff but that’s it for now and hope that answers some questions. Appreciate all the support and thanks for watching. Season 12 premieres June 1st on VH1 Classic. Spread the word, your support keeps this alive!

Comments

  1. This is most appreciated, thank you. I know it must get annoying being asked the same questions over & over – hopefully this will help cut down on that.

Now if only I can for tickets next year that would just make my day! I will certainly being trying to pay super close attention to that next year!

    Thanks again!

  2. Michel Portilla says:

    Hi Eddie!

I’m Michel from Chile & like to thank you for the show. It’s great to have some words from our biggest metal heroes…A lot of metal heads here in Chile & myself would like to watch Tom Araya & Slayer boys on your show, I know it’s difficult to have them but not impossible!

    Cheers from Chile!!!

    …& Stay Heavy!!

  3. Dave Smith says:

It is true about repeating guests. Merv Griffin always had Orson Welles, Artie Johnson, and Totie Fields.

Cool that you came to the website and answered comments Eddie…for all of the joking it is appreciated.

  4. Galactic Cowboy says:

looking forward to the new season!

  5. Hey Eddie! I really enjoy the show. How about a segment on lesser known bands like Audrey Horne or Crash Diet. They put out great music but aren’t really too well known in the states. Thanks.

  6. beth milligan says:

Ask my husband; I’m in love with the show. (He likes you too) I have learned so much from all three of you. You most of all. You also have a ten year old fan in my son. One band we have fallen in love with in addition to all the greats is In Flames. Wow, what a band. If you are ever in the Houston area, please let us know. We would love to chow down with you and down a few cold ones. Goodbye for now…(

  7. beth milligan says:

I had just written you above and got to thinking about your comments concerning the music business and how that world can work. Though not heavy, my husband’s friends were all in a band more U2 in type in the 80′s named “Four Reasons Unknown”. They went so far as to win an MTV Basement Tape Contest. (I’m not sure of that year) There was one record (lp) released before management changed at the label and that was all she wrote. You are more knowledgeable than most people will ever be on both the upsides and downsides to all of this. Thank you again for the respect you show all of the people who have given and continue to give to music.

  8. Hi Eddie! I would like to know if you consider on asking bands and band
Members of the grunge scene. Id love to see Alice In Chains, maybe Cantrell and Duvall.
Or maybe the DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots.
Pherhaps even Scott Weiland or Chris Cornell!

    Greetings from Venezuela.

  9. What ever happened to the guys of sepultura are they still in music or what

  10. I don’t have a twitter account so I’ll roll the dice and ask something here that i have always wanted your answer to. How would you have felt if Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent came into KISS as the Spaceman and The Cat . Would you have the same opinion then that you have now regarding TT and ES?

    • Yes! Even more so because Kiss still had an air of mystery then. Again, NOTHING to do with Tommy & Eric being in the band, but they should be their own people in MY opinion. Thanks

      • Thanks for replying. I would love to have a one on one with you regarding this topic. Maybe one day we’ ll cross paths near Madison.

  11. Fairly obvious Gene and Paul at one time held a completely different opinion of how they envisioned the future of the band because Eric and Vinnie had their own personas. I can’t speak on whether or not there was some legalities going on then that kept them from using Peter or Ace’s make up but I’m just going to chalk it up to Gene and Paul having a bit more integrity then. Once the reunion tour kicked up in the 90′s, I think Gene had a whole different idea of how things would be done and he’s never wavered from it. The brand, not a band, concept.

    • It’s always been about the money with Kiss. Even if fans claim they had more integrity in the beginning, they would have put Criss’s make-up on Eric Carr in a second if it would generate the success they have now with Tommy and Singer.

I’m just glad they are still around.

      • I’m sure it has a lot to do with them not owning the make-up rights when Peter and Ace left. I always wondered if they did own the rights would EC and VV wear the make-up of the spaceman and the cat.

  12. Craig Warnock says:

Hi there Eddie. I love the show. I love metal. I don’t know if you ever saw my post on Facebook. But I am a cook. Im not a gourmet chef but good cook for real people. I was thinking why isn’t there a restaurant where you can go that appreciates MEtal. And then I thought of That Metal Show. I figure all the bands with there booze wines sauces, coffees will be used in the foods. Have drinks and foods in their names. Cell their New CD’s and shirts, Have a place to promote new MEtal bands that could play there on the weekends. I know with my ideas and with all of you. I would love to be apart helping you if you think its a great idea. Way better than the Hard Rock Cafe. And its forthe common people not just for t he rich. Price wise. I hope you will reply. I really love the show and want to show appriecation by keeping metal alive. Sammy, Lemmy, Perry, all the guys . SO think about it and to the corprate pepople. Thank you Eddie and the boys. Hope to here from you soon

  13. beth milligan says:

Dear Eddie, we are wondering about getting ahold of the Sonisphere 2011 on DVD? I know we are only getting a small sample of what took place there. Hope your Monday is good.

  14. Cody Christopher says:

Hey guys Love the show. Was wandering if you could or have ever consided getting Ray Manzareck, or Robby Kreiger or John Densmore the surviving members of the best band of all time the Doors on the show or all 3 of them at 1 time either way it would be bad ass. I love The Doors and everything they stood 4. I was born in 85 and worship The Doors still. Wish I was around in them days. Also was wandering what ever happend 2 K’s Choice love the song im not an addict. Cause im clean now for 3 years. RIP, JIM MORRISON

  15. You people are whacked. Eddie tried to answer all the questions you ask all the time and you’re still asking him the same things. Just leave him alone and enjoy the show.

  16. Randy Wilcox says:

Eddie, thanks in advance for having the mighty mighty KIX band on this upcoming season! And on the same show as BOC!!!! That’s one for the archives.

Can’t wait for the new shows…..

  17. Love the show and I wish it was available in Sweden but atleast you can find most of the shows online. I’d love to see Texas Hippie Coalition or Europe as guests. But the, by far, most interesting guest (though very unlikely) would be the enigmatic Vinnie Vincent.

  18. Kale Baldwin says:

Everyone wants Vinnie as a guest!

  19. thebmorekid says:

Eddie, hey man i thought i knew a lot about metal bands but you have me beat. i understand the financial issue you run into, but you would think after 12 seasons and a growing fan base VH1 invest a little more and move you guys. I also understand the band issue of getting guest on the show. The thing that irritates me and probably alot of others is radio stations refuse to play outside the box. Get tired of hearing the same groups and the same songs. i get the top 10 need but when you play the same songs by Sabbath or Floyd, Priest, Zepplin etc. Come on these bands have ton to choose from. Then there are bands that get no air play. Babylon AD, Kix, Blue Murder, i can go on and on but you know them all. Anyway I record all episodes past and present. Although would like to see the first 5 seasons. Sorry I missed. i have 800 cds….not to mention previous cassettes and albums lol. well later. Keep it up TMS rules…

    • Not sure what you are asking for but obscure bands are NOT of interest to TV. Obscure means less people know them which doesn’t exactly work for TV which is ratings driven….

  20. Loch Ness says:

It might help to let fans know what VH-1 says when you ask about these things instead of just saying “It’s up to them.” That way, when we approach them, we know what we are dealing with.

  21. Beth Milligan says:

Asking about 2011 Sonisphere. Will they ever release it for purchase? What VH1 shows is just a tease.

  22. really should rename the show to ‘That Rock Show’. It’s okay. We’ll still watch. it’s not just metal and hard rock. the more diverse, the better, anyway. Heart isn’t Hard Rock. maybe a few songs but overall they aren’t and that’s fine. BTW, GET JOAN JETT ON THE SHOW!

  23. Joe Marmo says:

Thanks for addressing these questions Eddie.

  24. It’s a shame that vh1 all ready put out metal evolution on DVD but that metal show isn’t even out yet come on 12 seasons 8 episodes per season you could have a 12 disc box set how expansive could it be. But would love to see a segment on classic vinyl LP Records I have over 300 of them 18 Rolling Stones, 10 moody blues, 9 Led Zepplin, every 70′s & 80′s van halen album, helix, Ratt, 7 or 8 Jefferson airplane starship, hurricane Alice, Judi’s priest, 7 journey albums, 5 kiss, Aerosmith and to much more to list. But would be cool to showcase people’s classic rock & heavy metal viynl LP albums on that metal show

  25. Beth Milligan says:

Well I’ve got my That Metal Show t-shirt so now I’m ready for the new season. I know you do the best you can and how you feel toward the artists always shows. You can tell their affection for you is no act. You and the others give them the respect we would do if we could, if we were there in person; you do it for us as well as yourself. I don’t know if you can, but tell me how old your very cute children are now. We are in our fifties and have our one ten year old. He loves to play keyboard and is teaching himself guitar. He watches your show with me and says to say hello to you.

  26. George says:

Good point. but one question how come the art cover for the metal evolution says vh1 classic on the bottom right hand corner and when you go to buy it on amazon because it is a amazon create a space DVD sold only by amazon it listed the studio as vh1. Just curios unless that’s a typo or misprint.

  27. George says:

Thanks for the info. Would love to see a segment on classic hard rock & heavy metal vinyl LP Albums. Or maybe a pick of the week were you guys suggest a old school vinyl album. I love the new stuff for pick of the week but maybe if you guys showcased vinyl a little bit more it may help bring vinyl back bigger and better than ever even though vinyl is making a comeback slowly but surely. I saw rush about 3 or 4 years ago at jones beach first concert I’ve been to ever and they were amazing.

  28. Love the show, I watch it with my 17 y/o daughter who is also a huge fan. We were just wondering if there was a reason Joan Jett has not been on the show yet?

  29. Ron Mangler says:

Just got vh1 classic a few monthes ago and love this show. Good to know I’m not the only rock n roll obsessed nerd in the world. Anyways could you tell me where I can get some don jamieson stick on side burns?

  30. Eddie, I know that Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush has not been doing much lately, so he might not want to do the show-But why has that guy been shit on his whole career-I have been playing 30 years now and that guy is never in any interviews, guitar polls or anything. People rant and rave about the edge, Townsend, Richard and spingsteen-are you kidding not even in the same ballpark. Frank is a fucking rock god and his talents and effort seem to go unnoticed- one of the best in my opinion and it seems as if he doesnt even exsist……thank you definitely underated
    Gary
