Episode 3 of the new season of TMS is being edited as we speak and will premiere this Saturday night 11P ET on VH1 Classic. We discuss the Motley farewell announcement and welcome guests David Ellefson, Frank Bello (who have a new band together), Lzzy Hale (who joined us via Skype) and Bumblefoot who plays during the show. Top 5 is the best Anthrax songs. Had a blast, hope you like it.

A friend who runs a label shared with me some interesting news about TMS this week. My Pick Of The Week for our debut this season was Scorpion Child. After that show aired the label saw a more than 100% increase in album sales right afterwards. As a matter of fact all of our picks show a major sales spike after we feature them on TMS as does the guests latest products they plug. It’s great to see this show have a positive impact on sorely lacking sales in rock/metal music and I appreciate all you guys watching and responding. These bands can use the help for sure. Was just really cool to see the impact of TMS and how rock music CAN sell if it is presented to an audience that cares about it. And that’s the huge difference, YOU the audience! He also told me when bands do Letterman or Leno the sales spike is not nearly as dramatic. Now clearly those are way way bigger shows and I am not for a minute trying to compare TMS to them. But not everyone who watches them cares about rock. If you watch TMS you do, and that explains the great reactions in sales. So thanks, it all helps the cause of rock and metal music!

My FM radio show featuring the interview with Joey DeMaio airs on all affiliates and online outlets this weekend listed on the site. My SiriusXM interviews are on the SiriusXM app.

Headed to Milwaukee tomorrow. Hope to see you for two nights of Winger at Northern Lights tomorrow and Friday night. Tickets still available for tomorrow show. I’ll be in the lobby selling and signing my books at 7 each night, show starts at 8.

I love Motley Crue’s reasons for retiring. How many bands go out with the original lineup? So many stay too long at the party. So IF they truly end as they say, it’s a classy way to cap an amazing career. We shall see.. Mick Mars will be on TMS this season!

Please be sure to check out the Eddie Trunk/TrunkNation merch in the online store on this site. Appreciate all that have purchased and represent out there. Thanks!

  1. Hey Eddie, my name is Steve from New Martinsville, WV I have been a hard rock, heavy metal band fan since the early 80’s. I heard that type of music and it just appealed to me. My fav band of all time is Motley Crue. I heard the other day they are retiring. Is this true or is it a publicity stunt. They have done this thing before I guy leaves the band and they get somebody else. Or they go away for a while then come back. What’s going on with them really?

  2. Eddie, so let’s have the sales numbers for the week before TMS and compare it to the week after. Sounds like the label guy is blowing sunshine up your ass. Every time you say things like this it comes across like you are desperate for something to legitimize what you do. Also what bands are you talking about that are going out without the original line up..Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Iron Madden, Slayer, Testament, Dream Theater, AC/DC? Which bands stay too long at the party?

    1. Legitimize? It is stunning I can post something that thanks the audience and you can find a way to turn it around as a negative. Some deep issues there my friend, wow. And I need to legitimize a show over 100 episodes long and the longest running program in the networks history? Clueless. I better check with you before thanking my audience (which you are clearly a part of) for something? Amazing how haters will always twist something to find a way to hate.. nice

      1. I picked up the Scorpion Child CD on Amazon after you recommended it Eddie….sounds great….don’t let these fools throw backwardass compliments your way…Question?…who will be back to L.A. first?…That Metal Show or the Rams ??

      2. Eddie,
God bless ya man. When people like Frank make ridiculous comments like that….just has to be mind numbing.
I appreciate your work and wether a band’s sales go from 1-2 or 1000-2000, doesn’t matter. It’s all good for this great music.

    2. You enjoy being a troll there Frank? Ever have anything at all positive to say? Where the hell else are rock and metal fans going to get a weekly show to talk about the music we love?

You seem like a self centered asshole to me.

  3. Hi Eddie! I’m a big Scorpion Child fan. Since your friend from the label told you the band had a 100% increase in sales last week after the TMS mention, can you tell us what the actual sales numbers were? And did Black Label Society get any type of sales boost this week after Zach appeared on all 3 of your shows last week in “radio and television?” I’m guessing their catalog must have sold at least an extra 100,000 or so this week. And it might be a good idea to start giving the actual sales numbers for the week before a band appears on TMS or the radio shows and for the week after. So then you can show that the Trunk shows have an audience and has the power to make a difference in CD sales and concert tickets. Then maybe the actual big stars like Jon Bon Jovi, David Lee Roth, Ozzy , etc etc will start to come around to your shows.

    1. Sadly no band unless they are major sells anywhere close to 100K these days. Most bands don’t want exact sales quoted because you would be shocked at how minimal it is sadly. As for the artists you mention we have had a TON of major acts on TMS. It is a balance like everything. Jon Bon Jovi isn’t coming near anything with “metal” in the name, Sharon won’t let Ozzy do it, DLR was asked. Thanks

  4. I can think of six or seven bands that TMS/Eddie Trunk has turned me onto. Always willing to give anything new a listen. Thanks for kepping pick of the week in the show! I’m sure it gets difficult at times to find stuff to present. But like you said, those of us who enjoy rock and metal pay attention to all your recommendations.

  5. Eddie, love it when you plug new/old music on TMS. Had no idea Iommi and Hughes did an album a few years ago. Some fantastic stuff and Kenny Aronoff kills it on the drum kit. Keep up the great work!

  6. You should be proud of the fact that you’re getting not only the old rock (such as UFO of course) back to rock fans who missed them the first time, but also the new rock (Winery Dogs, Scorpion Child) to the rock fans who have no way to find out about these new releases. TMS is the light that leads us, the rockers, on the path to the music, old and new, that keeps us going (boy that was a gay comment).

  7. count me as one of the ones who bought the Scorpion Child CD after they mentioned it. Excellent disc. Hope they pick Killer Dwarfs Start@One disc this season. Great “lost” record.

  8. Yes! Scorpion Child are THE band to watch in 2014. There is an energy to their live show that you have to experience. I saw them on that small side stage at Mayhem festival and someday they will be playing arenas. Great job Eddie and TMS. Now your going to get flooded with cds from bands looking for promotion. Ha!

  9. Eddie, big fan here.

Grew up with Motley. SATD was 10th b-day present from pops despite the pentagram on the cover.

Can’t wait for Mick. Which Sat? You never hear him speak more than two sentences during a band interview so I can’t wait to hear what he says on your show without having to compete with his three band mates. I hear he asked Corabi to sing on his solo record. I would certainly like to know about that and what he personally thinks of the bands “retirement”. The last hiatus nearly killed him.

  10. Eddie,
Your comments on Scorpion Child are spot on! The whole reason I bought that CD actually goes back further than you mentioning it on TMS, to when there was a link to their video running on your site a few months back. I was blown away by it, tried to track it down through in the stores (even my favorite indep. shop in Wayne didn’t have it!); so ended up having to Amazon it. I hate waiting for shit in the mail, but I was on my last resort.
Anyway, we were watching TMS and when pick of the week seg. came up, I told my kids “Watch…Eddie’s gonna say ‘Scorpion Child'” They thought I’d seen the episode before, but I said “nope, I just know Eddie” See in our house YOU are a household-name. The moral of my ramble on is the Scorpion Child CD is redicu-killer, and thanks to you will be heard by many more of the masses.

  11. Cant wait to see Mick Mars! Itll be interesting to hear what he has to say about the farewell tour. Issues regarding his health being a factor are apparently conflicted. Just my opinion, but it seems to me as if Tommy Lee might be the one who wants everything to end. Surprising, as he used to be the one who seemed to have the most fun.
On another note, and I know you get tired of guest requests Ed, but I think a great guest would be Cronos of Venom. Highly influential and they were indeed from the classic era the show prefers to promote. Without Venom, we wouldnt have had bands like Slayer or even Metallica. Just a thought.

  12. I really enjoy everyone’s picks, and although I may not like some it’s always nice learning about new bands and music. Out here in southern California it’s kind of a radio wasteland for anything new. Occasionally KCAL 96.7 plays some new stuff, but everything else is pretty much the same old songs by the same old bands. Someday I’ll have to break down and get satellite radio to get your show. I’d listen on KCAL but it comes on way past this old rocker’s bedtime!

  13. Hi Eddie, thanks for responding to my message. You do know that you can get the Soundscan sales numbers on your own, right? You don’t need the bands to do it. And it might be fun for you to look into the actual sales numbers to see what kind of role you play in the industry. You can also do that by checking youtube views before and after a band appears to see to see if there is type of movement in the view numbers. And the guy above asked you a legit question about what bands were you referring to that stayed too long at the party without all the original members and you attacked him and called him a hater. There was nothing wrong with that question. Was it the Scorpions? Anthrax? Overkill? Judas Priest? Dokken? Slayer? Black Label Society? Thanks!

    1. I didn’t attack him for that part of the question. Who stayed too long at the party is a matter of opinion. Recent examples I’ve seen mostly center around singers that can no longer sing and extremely diluted lineups.

  14. According to Metal Insider’s Metal by Numbers 1/29, Scorpion Child sold 250 copies during the week in question and they noted that it was a huge increase compared to sales the week prior. That may seem insignificant, but the lowest charting (so-called) metal album on the Billboard 200 for said week was Korn’s The Paradigm Shift with 1,600 at #192. Regardless of how little albums sell nowadays the statistics cannot be disputed – Eddie is a tastemaker and his fans have marketing power.

In other news, for those who love release dates, tomorrow (1/31) marks the 25th anniversary of Exodus’Fabulous Disaster and Warrant’s Dirty, Rotten, Filthy, Stinking Rich.

  15. What’s up with the Frank dude who just posts negative shit on here? And by shit, he sounds like a turd who brings nothing to any discussion.

There isn’t anything wrong with being proud of the fact that a discussion about a band on TMS can lead to increased sales. The TMS audience cares about rock and heavy metal, and we choose to support it by buying CD’s and attending concerts when we can. You, Don, and Jim have built up a level of trust with the audience. We don’t always agree, but it is always fun.

So Eddie, don’t let a turd like Frank get you down. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

  16. As for the Crue, their tours have done well even after their heyday, so I’m surprised that it’s their farewell. Of course, Kiss (and many others) have gone the Farewell route (when Ace left I believe in ’02), only to renege on their promise and put out a few more albums (Sonic Boom or Bust, and Monster), to diminishing listernership. Time will tell with Crue, but the 1st thing I did was laugh because the word farewell gets tossed around quite frequently in rock, and it seems that few actually mean it and it’s a pretty slick way to drive up ticket sales. We’ll see…

  17. Motley doing it the right way ? They tried another singer and failed, they tried another drummer and failed, now with the Live Nation contract ending, attendance dwindling(happens when bands tour every year), they sign a Final Tour agreement. Which in reality is just an agreement where the name can not be used unless all 4 members that still own their part of the band are involved. Doesn’t preclude the Crue from doing whatever they want to in the future. For Nikki to use the Original member card after replacing 2 members before is a joke…………As to the guy above that said numbers of CD’s sold should be released ? Get real, the cd sold about 20 copies up from 10 the week before(example) that’s why percentages instead of actual sales increase was given. The music biz is crap now, which is actually pitiful . The SC album , along with Jake E Lee’s new album are the best things to coma along in years.

  18. Eddie,on the recent show with Living Colour you recommended people check out the Iommi/Hughes
album Fused.I wanted to high five you through the tv.The album is just so underrated.People also
really need to check out the DEP Sessions also with Iommi/Hughes.A lot of great stuff on there. Thanks

  19. Eddie has similar tastes in music to what I like. We grew up in the same era and appreciate the metal scene from the late 70s and 80s and all the bands that were spawned later based on this era. He has turned me on to many new artists in the past 5 years that I would have not heard otherwise. I would have never found Winery Dogs without Eddie’s recommendation. That album is kick ass and it is too bad that more people don’t appreciate this type of music. Thanks Eddie for keeping the listeners up to date with new hard rock music!

  20. Great TMS episode last night with David Ellefson and Frank Bello. While watching the show I downloaded Altitudes & Attitude from iTunes. Even received a reply back from Bello after I tweeted about it. TMS does indeed help promote an artist’s product. Bumblefoot performing all over the set was great as well. Oh, by the way Ed, I received my TMS shirts in the mail last week as well. One for me and one for my brother’s birthday, which is coming up soon.

  21. Eddie, did Al Jourgensen drop from this season since he’s going to rehab, or is he still scheduled later? Also, even with our numerous conversations about them, the last being Friday in Milwaukee…please play some Steel Panther! Love ya!

  22. That sucks…being from Chicago , I’ve been a big Ministry fan, as well as his side projects, for a long time. I hope he can finally clean up and you guys can get him down the road.

  23. We all have to remember here without eddie don or Jim there would be no that metal show sure you could have 50 bands line up wanting to do tms but it’s ultimately eddie don and jim that keep the show going and of course all of the hard rock and heavy metal bands that love comming on the show. I understand vh1 classic has a budget and a set of rules which must be followed but eddie hands down has found a way to push the envolope every single season lets face it gene Simmons may never come on tms never will David lee Roth and many others for reasons of there own but yet people keep asking the same questions ohh when is this guy coming on the show or why don’t you get this band for your show. Eddie asks and if the singers or bands refuse than it’s out of his hands bands or singers shouldnt feel pushed to come on the show but the singers and groups that these 3 guys have gotten to come on the show is amazing. Sure some people may get bored seeing the same singer on multiple shows but it’s better than nothing even though zac Wylde has been on several times he never gets boring allways something new and fresh from him and Sebastian Boch and everybody else. You must understand that tms is probally gonna be the only show ever to feature hard rock and metal guests there will never be another show like it. Personaly I love the tms top 5 it’s the one of the few chances eddie don and Jim can really go all out and argue like kids which brings out the comedy of the show. Can’t remember how many times I laughed during a tms top 5 or a stump the trunk very funny segments. Thanks eddie for keeping the show alive for 10 years heres to another 10 years cause I never seen such a more passionit person who truly loves what he does more than eddie trunk thank you.

If I may suggest a tms top 5
Top 5 bands that should retire from music
