THE BLACK CROWES PRESENT “SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER 2020” WORLD TOUR, CHRIS AND RICH ROBINSON REUNITE TO CELEBRATE DEBUT ALBUM’S 30th ANNIVERSARY

The Black Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson will herald the thirty-year anniversary of their landmark quintuple platinum debut album Shake Your Money Maker with a world tour beginning June 17th in Austin, Texas.  Tickets and VIP packages are on sale now. To celebrate the announcement, the band will play two intimate shows, first at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City this evening, followed by the Troubadour in Los Angeles on November 14th. More info about tickets will be shared on @theblackcrowes Instagram page. The Black Crowes, which Melody Maker proclaimed as “the most Rock n’ Roll Rock n’ Roll band in the world” will be playing their debut, described by Rolling Stone as, “a guitar-party cracker that marries Southern R&B crunch and Anglo cock-strutting attitude” in its entirety plus all the hits from the band’s illustrious catalogue. The ever-volatile Robinson brothers have not played a show since 2013 when they vowed never to play or speak together again. Thankfully for fans, times seems to have healed these wounds.

Chris Robinson says of reuniting, “I’m thrilled & blessed to be playing with my brother celebrating the music we’ve made & bringing our lives together full circle. Long live Rock n’ Roll & The Black Crowes.”

Rich Robinson adds, “First and foremost, I’m really happy to have my brother back in my life. To be able to play music again together and celebrate the first record we made as kids, is a gift. To have these songs stand up after 30 years is something I could’ve never fathomed.”

In 1990, when journalists were lamenting the death of rock, Atlanta’s Black Crowes gave the genre a swift and much needed kick in the ass with Shake Your Money Maker. Fueled by singles Jealous Again, Twice As Hard, She Talks To Angels, and the rollicking cover of Otis Redding’s Hard To Handle the band immediately took the rock world by storm, topping Rolling Stone’s “Best New American Band Readers Poll” in late 1990.

The Black Crowes went on to release eight studio and four live albums, selling in the tens of millions along the way; they sold out shows around the world; had legendary guitarist Jimmy Page join as a member; got kicked off a tour with ZZ Top for insulting the sponsor; got screwed by bad record deals; got married and divorced, fought amongst themselves and the rest of the world; in other words they’ve done everything a legendary rock group should do. 2020’s reunion and tour produced by Live Nation is sure to further cement the band’s legacy as one of the best and most loved rock bands of all time.

Just like alot of other bands, their first album (IMO) was their best. Love “Shake Your Money Maker,” still listen to it from time to time, but after the second album – “The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion” (which was also pretty good, but nowhere near as good as SYMM) I kinda lost interest in The Black Crowes. But that was then, and this is now, and now my interest is back! I just hope this is real and the Robinson brothers don’t get “Jealous Again” of each other! After July 1st in Tampa, if all goes well, I’m gonna need a “Remedy!” 😉

I was in the same boat, I bought the first two albums, and lost interest after that, as well.

If you liked their first album, then you should definitely check out 1999’s “By Your Side” album. At the time, it was sort of a return to their original sound and away from the endless space-jammy songs they started doing.

I, for one, was thrilled to hear Chris/Rich on Howard Stern this morning to announce the tour. Post-1990, I think the Black Crowes and Red Hot Chili Peppers (post-Blood Sugar Sex Magic) are the two best American rock bands.

You know what’s funny? I’ve only had their first 2 albums on cassette, (still have SYMM) never had any Black Crowes on vinyl or CD, until now! Just ordered (about an hour ago) their “Greatest Hits 1990-1999, A tribute to a work in progress?” Something like that! Should be here just in time for poker night on Saturday! 😉

Both of mine are cassettes as well-LOL!

    • Doug R. on

LOL!!! 😉 You know, I didn’t even start buying CD’s until the mid 90’s! But once I started, I couldn’t stop, and now I have thousands! 🙂

    • Dana on

I think I bought cassettes at the time, to put them in my Walkman, as I didn’t have a Discman.

SONY ~ the one and only! 😉

Saw these guys at Nissan Pavilion in NoVA twice in the mid-90’s, at least once on the Horde Festival. Like all of you I lost interest after the 2 albums. I also got tired of Chris’ antics with whatever was going on with he and his brother, started to think they were overrated.

      Tasker,

I feel the same way, and while they are a good band, I think the accolades in this Press Release, are a bit much. As for the Robinson brothers, they have had as much drama as the Gallagher brothers, from Oasis.

Not that I don’t appreciate some of their songs, but if I am in the mood for blues, or honky tonk, I tend to reach for Stevie Ray Vaughn or the on occasion, the Stones. I can’t remember the last time I listened to the Black Crowes. Probably, that last time I listened to any Grunge bands. LOL!

Yes, agreed. Way too much radio play back in the 90’s and with these guys, Hootie and John Poppers Blues Traveler, I was overloaded.Cheers \mm/

    • Dana on

      I completely agree.

I love Vaughan’s version of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” guitar genius!

    • Dana on

I think Vaughn was so talented, what a loss.

    • Doug R. on

Hard to believe it’s been almost 30 years already.
BTW, I really like Blues Traveler! “But Anyway” was the “Hook” that got me hooked on them! 😉 Other 90’s bands I like (very few) are ~ Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, Hootie? Eh, a little bit, of course my faves are Alice In Chains, STP, and Soundgarden. There are some others, but who they are? Right now to quote AIC, “I Can’t Remember!” 😉

I do like Stevie Ray and Crossfire was what pulled me in circa 84’, I was 12, ha! I swear I saw him in Roanoke, VA open for Huey Lewis and the News. Think that was 86’ It was incredible. Speaking of Jimi. I always loved Stevie’s version of Little Wing…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6G53BMgugo

I was so touched seeing his guitar at the Met exhibit knowing all the great songs he played on it, and lamenting the fact that he is no longer here.

However, I was disappointed at how underrepresented the 80’s were in the show. Where was Rhoads’ guitar? 🙁

I’ve always been a huge fan of the black Crowe’s their album with jimmy page is one of my favorite albums to pop on the turntable – incredibly talented – the brothers must have really mended fences because there are a ton of dates on this tour I’m going to see them in Detroit – heard about the reunion on stern and watched a couple of clips from stern they sound better than I remember live – at least for me I’m happy

    • Dana on

I think it’s more about money, hence “shake your moneymaker,” than mending fences. Their original drummer, Steve Gorman, has also been making the rounds and does not seem to have anything positive to say about Chris Robinson.

Also, I remember when they were starting their trajectory, the comparison to The Faces, was constant and abundant.

  • robert davenport on

I actually loved the fact that their sound was similar to the faces one of my favorite all time bands – I’m sure money is a huge motivation for any band to reunite and tour – but brother brother rivalry is a very real thing my brother and I got into horrible physical fights all the way into our late 20s. We competed against each other in everything possible we threw chairs after a monopoly game once lol -we didn’t speak for 5 years – were good now and normally functioning adults ….. so I I believe this is equally money. And fixing their relationship- I’m putting my money on family

    • Dana on

Yes, I know sibling rivalry can be very intense, between sisters as well. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, look at the Gallagher brothers from Oasis.

I didn’t know the Faces were one of your favorite bands. 🙂 So yes, your appreciation of the Black Crowes is understood.
