I am not a fan of live albums, I prefer to watch live concerts on VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray.
However, if I had to choose, no surprise it is John Sykes‘ Bad Boy Live!, Judas Priest‘s 30th Anniversary British Steel Tour (Thank you, Scott) and Ozzy Osbourne‘s Tribute.

Damn, can’t believe I forgot Rush, Exit Stage Left, Ozzy, Speak of the Devil and Tribute, plus Live at Pompeii! Those are some of my all time favorites too! Definitely Rush and Ozzy are up there as my most listened to live albums of all time. Especially Speak of the Devil. That was my round about introduction to Black Sabbath, though I had no idea until a year or two after I bought it lol I had heard Sabbath before that, but only two songs. Had no idea Ozzy was the singer of sabbath though. After I found out Ozzy was the singer from Sabbath I grabbed everything I could find. All because of Speak of the Devil.
You’re so right about Speak of the Devil and the sound Brad Gillis brought to that recorded live performance. RUSH, Ozzy and Pink Floyd are about best live in the 80’s. I was first introduced to these live albums circa 1988 when I was 15. To this day I still listen to them several times a year.
I started buying 8-tracks & albums in the mid-to-late 70’s. That seemed to be the hey-day of great live performances being released. I really enjoyed the live albums because they were kind of a greatest hits package. You got the best songs from multiple albums in one purchase. Also, you’d get some long, extended jam or a drum or guitar solo that was not on a standard release.
Some of my earliest & favorite purchases:
Wings Over America
Cheap Trick At Budokan
Judas Priest Unleashed In The East
Frampton Comes Alive
Bob Seger Live Bullet
REO You Get What You Play For
AC/DC If You Want Blood…
Foghat Live!
Skynyrd One More For The Road
Neil Young Live Rust
Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo
Outlaws Bring It Back Alive
Scorpions Tokyo Tapes
Stevie Ray Vaughn Live Alive
Tesla Five Man Acoustical Band
Blackberry Smoke Leave A Scar
AND, The Greatest Live Album Ever: UFO Strangers In The Night
Dana, I too prefer to watch live concerts on video.
Back in the late 80’s, I was the first person in my circle to buy a stereo VHS recorder for the sole purpose to watch concert & music videos. That started my obsession collecting music videos. VHS to LaserDisc to DVD to BluRay.
My first and earliest live concert videos on VHS:
Van Halen Live Without A Net
Def Leppard In The Round…
Iron Maiden Live After Death
Priest… Live
Queensryche Live In Tokyo
