Mötely Crùe bassist Nikki Sixx was recently asked, by a fan named Chris, on his Twitter, who the most underrated bass player is?
Sixx’s reply? “Me.”
In reponse to Sixx’s reply, Steel Panther drummer Stix Zadinia, wrote “Yeah. Right. WAY more underrated than Geddy Lee, Eddie Jackson, and Skid from LOVE/HATE…….shall I go on? “
He then clarified, “That’s sarcasm.”
As previously reported, Mötley Crüe destroyed their “Cessation of Touring” agreement, that stated that band would never play another live show, as en entity, again, after their final one, in L.A. on Dec. 31st, 2016.
The band claimed renewed interest in the group, and fan demand, after the success of the Netflix biopic The Dirt, guided their decision to rescind the contract.
The band was set to hit the road this summer on The Stadium Tour, alongside Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, but due to the pandemic, those dates were scrapped.
Rescheduled 2021 dates were recently announced and can be viewed here.
Dana’s note: So, who do you think is the most underrated bass player?

My favorites in no particular order are Steve Harris, John Entwistle and John Paul Jones.
All great players. Entwistle is underrated as well, not as much as some of the others, but still underrated nonetheless.
Any group with 2 lead guitarists, and the bass still stands out, is the sign of a great bass player. Which is why Steve Harris is my favorite.
As for underrated, Dug Pinnick gets no love. David Z. also gets no love (R.I.P.). Saw King’s X and ZO2 live many times and both sound amazing. NOT NIKKI SIXX!!! Love me some Crue but really? I hope he was joking.
Geezer Butler is the best…then, Roger Glover..as smooth and silky a bass player there is…Yngwie copies him on bass.
How do you define “underrated”? Steve Harris is widely considered one of the best bass players in heavy metal. Same with Geddy Lee in rock. “Underrated” to me means “doesn’t get the credit they deserve”.
My vote? Gene Simmons. Ever since Rick Nielsen said he sucked, that’s been conventional wisdom, but he plays some tasty stuff. I agree with Shannon on Geezer and Roger Glover. Geezer is considered one of the greats, but I think he’s even better than that. I think he’s the soul of Black Sabbath.

That is how I interpret it, as well.
The way he locked in with Bill’s bass drum gave Sabbath’s music this emotional weight too. But, what about Ace’s bass playing? That’s him on all his songs after the third Kiss record and on his solo records.
Dug pinnck and gene simmons both deserve an equal most underrated vote
