Andy Greene of Rolling Stone reports:
The nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2014 are in, and the list includes Nirvana, KISS, the Replacements and Hall and Oates. The rest of this year’s hopefuls include the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, LL Cool J, N.W.A, Link Wray, the Meters, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, Yes and the Zombies. The top vote-getters will be inducted in April at a ceremony in New York City.
For the second consecutive year, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 10th, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they’d like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class of 2014.
In order to be eligible for this year’s ballot, artists or bands need to have released their first single or album in 1988 or earlier. Many of the nominees have appeared on previous ballots, but this is the first appearance for Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, the Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Link Wray, Cat Stevens, Yes and the Zombies. (Gabriel was inducted as a member of Genesis in 2009.)
Nirvana is the only act this year to land on the ballot in its first year of eligibility. Their cover of Love Buzz by Shocking Blue was their first single, hitting stores in late 1988.
If Yes are inducted, it might lead to their first performance with original singer Jon Anderson since 2004. “I don’t have any anger about our exclusion,” Yes bassist Chris Squire told Rolling Stone in 2011. “But it would be a magnificent thing if they would include every member of Yes – I think there’s about 19 or 20 of us.”

Do you think Eddie Trunk will be able to sit at the KISS table next to Gene and Paul ?
Deep purple and kiss are influential bands and still are to this very day..such a shame that they are getting fucked around..the rock n roll hall of fame are as blind as ray Charles and Stevie wonder when it comes to inducting deserving rock bands
Not a surprise that Nirvana is leading the votes. Nirvana should be a shoe in. Definitely the biggest and most influential rock band on that list.
Hopefully, Deep Purple and YES get inducted as well.
I think Yes will go in right away and they should. Spearheaded progressive rock. Top drawing and selling band for over 2 decades etc….. Zombies are a critic’s favorite due to the brilliant LP “Odessey and Oracle.” Deep Purple deserves to go in with their innovative blend of classical with hard rock and top tours and record sales.
Linda Rondstadt to me just picked a bunch of great songs and really didn’t improve or change them much. Listen to “Heatwave” by Martha and the Vandellas – it ain’t any different than Lindas. “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” – same thing. “Ooh Baby” ditto. She just was packaged by the record company to resell a bunch of great black songs to whitey. And I love her voice and think in her prime she was drop-dead gorgeous. But gotta call it like I see it.
Cat Stevens was unique sounding and hugely popular and acclaimed. He’ll get in. Probably gotta put “Butterfield Blues Band” in too. Best white traditional blues band around and the “East West” LP was very groundbreaking. No need to comment on KISS. They ain’t going in.
Nirvana is more influental than Kiss? SMH
Easily. There was a whole new genre born from them called “Post Grunge”. KISS only has 2 known songs.
Any coincidence that now Linda Ronstadt has announced she has Parkinson’s and can no longer sing she is FINALLY nominated? Just like how, after six nominations, Donna Summer is inducted AFTER HER DEATH? REALLY? Does Joan Jett have to get sick or die in order to be inducted? The Rock n Roll Hall of Shame indeed. Don’t get me started on KISS, Deep Purple, etc., etc., etc. not yet inducted….
Kiss and deep purple better get in. Where is UFO?
