4/23: A RECAP OF THE MONSTERS OF ROCK CRUISE 2015

Back from a great 4 nights on board the Monsters Of Rock Cruise I once again had the honor to host. You can’t imagine the non stop party this thing is! I was averaging going to bed around 6A and waking up around 9A! To say I am fried would be an understatement! Just a TON of music and a TON of my fans and I can’t thank you all enough for the support and kind words. I swear I took a photo with all 3,000 plus on the ship! So cool, thank you thank you! This is a pretty exhausting event for me. There are so many bands and getting around takes time. Sadly I actually don’t get to see many of the bands that play because it is a working event for me and I am pulled in many directions. There are SO many bands of every level on board. Some I don’t see at all, some a few songs, some I do an intro and then have to run to an interview. Of what I did see here are a few comments (all bands played twice):

Europe: Their new album War Of Kings is a favorite. Band sounded unreal. Tempest’s voice spot on and John Norum is a cross between Schenker & Blackmore. Great to see them again and look forward to catching a full show if I can at M3. Interesting to see all the crew on the ship (which was European) come out to watch this band who are much bigger with that fan base. Thanks to Joey for adding “Second Day” from the new album into the set and sending it out to me. New album may be their best.

Black Star Riders: New album another early candidate for album of the year. Band was on fire. Changed the set a bit in their two performances. A few Lizzy classics and mostly stuff from their own albums as they become more of an original band. So good! Europe and BSR are together on tour at some dates, GREAT bill!

Faster Pussycat: THE party on the ship! Just great fun dirty rock n roll. These guys are the real deal and really bring it. I even jumped up with them at 2A at the pool set, did a shot of Jack with Taime and Danny and sang (badly) the chorus of Bathroom Wall! Too much fun! They are on tour for the next month. Was cool to chat with Riki Rachtman for a bit who did a Cathouse themed night with Taime that I never made it to.

The Winery Dogs: Two stellar performances. These are just a couple warm up gigs before the band heads in to do album 2 which is written and recording starts soon. They did one new song that opened the set. Mind blowing as usual. They will also be at M3 and Rocklahoma. Mike Portnoy had a birthday Monday night and I led the crowd in a sing along. Good to have TWD about to start up again and prove this band does have legs.

Richie Kotzen; RK played with his solo trio and like last year blew peoples minds! If you never saw this guy solo you can’t imagine how insane it is. There are great players all over the place but this guy is just next level, and he sings great as well. How brilliant? Well lets just say Nuno Bettencourt sat front row with his jaw on the floor watching Kotzen play. Yes a bad ass like Nuno! He was so blown away that he walked up and grabbed the mic when the set was done and told the crowd they just witnessed true greatness and that if Hendrix was still alive he might be like what he just heard. He also compared him to Jeff Beck, and then said that wasn’t fair because he was his own style too. Then he jokingly proclaimed he hated him for how good he was. This was from NUNO! Could not be prouder of my friend RK and the new converts he makes every day by just doing what he has been doing. The difference is there is just way more attention on it now due to the success of TWD.

Extreme: On fire. Much of the focus on Nuno for good reason, but I have said many times what all of these guys do is incredible and the vocals are all real. People were raving!

Tesla: Sounded great. First set mostly new album, second classics. When I kicked off the cruise they were the first band to play. Huge tour with Def Lep this Summer. They have always been one of the best of the era and still are.

Night Ranger: Only saw their acoustic set. Sounded good as always and did some Damn Yankees too. Kerri Kelly replaces Joel Hoekstra.

Y&T: STILL amazing. Dave has to be among the worlds most underrated players and singers and is still amazing. He said this may be the best lineup the band has ever had too. They will be doing a doc on their history I will be a part of. More soon.

Lita Ford: Barely made the cruise due to issues with her paperwork and passport but it all worked out and she rocked as usual.

Frank Hannon Band: Another very underrated player and his solo band was heavier than I thought they would be. Frank always getting better as a singer also.

Queensryche: Sounded strong and wrapping up a new album. I hosted their Q&A as well.

Krokus: Hosted their Q&A but barely saw them play sadly. Hopefully at M3. Marc and Chris are very excited to be back in the US and hopefully restart a following here. However some fans upset the band would not play MTV hits from albums like The Blitz. Chris explained he feels that’s the bands glam period and was never really what they were about. But there was some grumbling about the lack of Midnight Maniac, etc. Otherwise people I spoke with said they sounded good.

Tyketto: An example of a band that never had huge success in their day but through events like this cruise are gaining fans late in their history, and many new ones. These guys are old friends and it was good to see them.

Tom Keifer: In fine voice once again and the band sounded punchier than it ever has. Tom is fully committed to his new band and latest album. Something rare to see in an era where everyone is always pushing 5 things at the same time.

Mike Tramp: Another old friend that plays solo acoustic these days with some backing tracks for drums, etc. Mike has found his niche doing this vs trying to front a big loud rock band and seems happy mixing White Lion with other stuff.

Again if I didn’t mention them it’s just that I didn’t see them. Truly every band sounded great and it was a blast! Was also fun hanging and having my TMS partner Don Jamieson on board for the first time. He and Craig Gass were among the comics that did stand up. And good to see my SiriusXM buds Luc Carl and Keith Roth, Nikki from The Bone in SF, DJ Will and all my other friends and co-hosts. Next cruise will be the Def Leppard Cruise I will host Jan 21-25, then MOR East and West! Honored to host these great events and I want to thank Larry Morand and the entire On The Blue Cruises staff for being such pros and for making me a part of them. Most of all thanks to the MANY bands and fans I met and who are so amazingly supportive. Tons of photos coming to my Twitter and FB and maybe I’ll make a page to post them here as well from my friend and photographer Ron Akiyama. M3 next week, details to come on that but I will be back hosting. All confirmed events on the home page.

ACE FREHLEY RETURNS TO THIS WEEK’S “THAT METAL SHOW” ON APRIL 25TH AT 9PM ET

Thatmetalshowlogo Episode 10 of season 14 of VH1 Classic’s centerpiece in original programming That Metal Show marks the return of Kiss original guitarist Ace Frehley and the debut of former Grand Funk Railroad singer and guitarist Mark Farner. Ace chats with hosts Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine about KISS’ long overdue induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, being on stage with his former band mates, and his frustrations with the original Kiss lineup not performing together at the ceremony. Mark Farner shares stories of the early Grand Funk Railroad days, even telling about a time they opened for Led Zeppelin and how he was blown away watching them perform. He says it is still one of the best performances he has ever seen to this day.

The episode also features the debut of Nita Strauss from Alice Cooper as the guest musician. Nita is only the second female musician to grace the second stage. Nita tears it up on the guitar and also talks about playing with Alice Cooper, being discovered while performing the national anthem at an LA Kiss football game, and the solo album she is currently working on.

This week’s Rank segment finds Frehley creating the definitive list of the Kiss albums he performed on. He jokingly states that he couldn’t rank certain albums higher because his recollection of recording them was a blur. Eddie continues to impress the panel during this week’s Stump The Trunk and this week’s Throwdown puts the debut Led Zeppelin album against the debut Black Sabbath album. The panel is split but the audience declares a clear-cut winner between the two. The TMS Top 5 takes a week off but Take It Or Leave It returns, as the topic is the recent announcement of the retirement of Twisted Sister.

Fans can watch all previous episodes, exclusive bonus clips and the new That After Show segment at ThatMetalShow.VH1.com and on the new VH1 app.

DEF LEPPARD LEAD GUITARIST PHIL COLLEN ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF NEW VENTURE, DELTA DEEP

PhilCollenheadshot400
Phil Collen, lead guitarist of Def Leppard, announces the formation and release of his new blues based music project, Delta Deep, coming this summer. Collen recorded the mix of original and hand-picked cover tracks with fellow Delta Deep bandmates Debbi Blackwell-Cook (back-up vocalist for such artists as Michael Buble & Luther Vandross), Forrest Robinson (drummer for India.Arie, Joe Sample & The Crusaders, TLC), and Robert DeLeo (bassist for Stone Temple Pilots). Their self-titled debut album will be released on June 23rd on Mailboat Records and also features special guest appearances by Def Leppard vocalists Joe Elliott, Whitesnake’s David Coverdale, Sex Pistols/Manraze drummer Paul Cook, and Girl/Manraze bassist, Simon Laffy.

Collen initially started Delta Deep in 2012 after jamming at home over the course of a year with friend and relative, Debbi Blackwell-Cook (Blackwell-Cook is the Godmother of Collen’s wife, Helen). What started as a casual pairing singing Motown and classic blues staples while Debbi frequently visited Collen’s home quickly turned into much more. Collen, Helen, and Debbi began writing original music which Collen and Debbi recorded in Collen’s home studio. Later that year, a chance meeting re-acquainted Collen with Memphis native and enigmatic heavy metal, jazz, & r-n-b drummer Forrest Robinson. A friend suggested giving STP bassist Robert DeLeo a call. Sharing a loving affinity for soul, funk and the blues, DeLeo was the perfect fit. According to Collen, “We really wanted Robert in this band. He had the added firepower of being the premiere pioneer and most ‘badassed bass player’ to come out of the alternative rock explosion.”

The best description of Delta Deep, a multi-racial band, has been “Aretha and Tina in their prime singing over early Zeppelin.” Original song and lead off single Bang The Lid introduces the musical synchronicity of Collen, Blackwell-Cook, DeLeo, & Robinson. Blackwell-Cook also duets with Collen on the album tracks as well as with featured vocalists Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott-Mistreated and Whitesnake’s David Coverdale-Private Number. Legendary Sex Pistol’s punk drummer Paul Cook and Collen’s former bandmate from Girl bass player Simon Laffy” guest on the classic cover Black Coffee. Guesting on the Delta Deep original song, Burnt Sally is keyboardist, CJ Vanston (Tina Turner, Toto, Joe Cocker, Carol King) adding to the soulful tune on the Hammond 3 Organ.

Collen is widely known to millions of rock ‘n roll fans for his iconic albums with Def Leppard. When asked what made him decide to do a blues project Collen responded, “Blues was created out of something completely different from what we hear today. I grew up listening to rock music but then I found out it was all based on blues. Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimi Hendrix, all of those guys….they got it from the blues. When I hear Debbi sing, I can hear the pain. She’s an incredibly beautiful 62 year old black woman who has been through things and she can sing through her pain. Not everyone can do that and not everyone sounds like Debbi.”

While many artists aim to make their mark by creating new genres or introducing their own new versions of music, Collen and Delta Deep melded their blues inspirations with who they are as artists and are unleashing that expression onto the world.

ANTHRAX’S CHARLIE BENANTE INTRODUCES LINE OF COFFEE, “BENANTE’S BLEND”

CharlieBenante640 It’s been a long time coming, but unabashed coffee connoisseur, Anthrax’s Charlie Benante, has entered the world of entrepreneurship, announcing Benante’s Blend. The coffee will come in two different varieties: the Be All End All blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the Forever Metal blend, a milder coffee. Benante’s Blend will be available beginning today through Benante’s website.

“I grew up in a large Italian family and coffee was a daily staple in our home,” said Benante. “As a kid, I loved coffee so much, my mother said that at one point, she put some coffee in my bottle. For me, the taste of coffee is one of the greatest tastes that there is on earth, so I decided to create what was for me, the perfect cup of coffee.”

This is actually Benante’s second foray into the world of coffee. Years ago, he joined up with Dave Mustaine for a line of coffee and coffee products. “I’ve learned so much since then,” said Benante, “especially about selecting and blending the right beans, and how important roasting is.”

Benante hooked up with a company that specializes in coffee roasting. “I was pretty specific about the tastes I was looking for,” Benante explained. “I told them the type of coffee I wanted, what some of my favorite coffees were, and we built it from there. We combined beans from different regions, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Sumatra and Africa, and tweaked the amount of time the beans were roasted to get just the right taste. It was a process, I tested a lot of different blends, but it was a lot of fun.

“I love coffee so much,” Benante added, “if I could make it a cologne, I would wear it.”

In between coffee tastings, Benate has been recording the next Anthrax album due out later this year. The band kicks off leg one of its 2015-2016 global tour on April 24th. Dates are below.

MOTLEY CRUE ANNOUNCE TWENTY-ONE MORE DATES FOR THEIR FAREWELL TOUR

motleycrue640 Iconic rock band Motley Crue has announced 21 more North American dates. The new shows will take place in October and December as part of the band’s two-year “The Final Tour” cycle. MÖTLEY CRÜE’s touring career will conclude on New Year’s Eve, December 31 at Staples Center in their hometown of Los Angeles where the band began 34 years ago.

Says bassist Nikki Sixx, “The demand to add more shows in North America has been overwhelming. The fans have spoken, so we’ve been trying to find time for more dates in addition to the international dates on the schedule this year. We want to say goodbye to as many fans as possible so we added these shows around the holidays. No better way to spend them than with the people who have supported us over all these years.”

The new North American shows announced today will see the band visit cities such as Little Rock, Arkansas and Lincoln, Nebraska in the U.S. and Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon in Canada. All dates will be taking place in arenas exclusively to ensure fans get to experience the full show production of “The Final Tour.”

Leading up to today’s announcement, Motley Crue gave fans an opportunity to voice their thoughts on what additional cities they would like to see the band play. Fans shared their messages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #DemandtheCrue and could see the progress of the conversation via a heat map that was updated daily at: Motley.com/DemandTheCrue.

After thirty-four years performing together, Motley Crue’s 2015 leg of “The Final Tour” includes shows all across the globe. Next up, Motley Crue will head over to Australia and New Zealand in May for their last-ever shows there. June will see the band saying farewell to the European festival circuit with three massive performances at Download (UK), Sweden Rock (Sweden) and Nova Rock (Austria) festivals before taking their can’t-miss show back to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico this summer.

Motley Crue first announced plans for “The Final Tour” by signing a Cessation Of Touring Agreement at a press conference in Los Angeles in January 2014, solidifying the end of their touring career for December 2015. Since the announcement, the band has been touring tirelessly to say goodbye to fans around the world, most recently playing their final shows in Japan.

The 2014 leg of “The Final Tour” was one of last year’s top-grossing tours, selling close to a million tickets across 72 cities and grossing more than $45 million.

“Motley Crue’s ‘Final Tour’ has been a massive global success and a true testament to the popularity of this legendary rock band,” says Rick Franks, Live Nation’s regional president of North American concerts. “New Year’s Eve 2015 will mark the end of an era in rock history but there’s no doubt that MÖTLEY CRÜE’s music will influence generations of artists for years to come.”

Audiences can also expect a high-energy performance from very special guest Alice Cooper, who joined the band for “The Final Tour” in 2014. He will be tearing up the stage for crowds in Australia/New Zealand and across North America once again on most 2015 dates. The pairing has been roundly praised as a must-see by fans and media alike.

The band’s exclusive VIP Packages (including opportunities to meet band members, new exclusive merchandise, up-close and personal view of the encore performance like never before in the Crüesnest, and more) and fan club pre-sales for these dates start April 22. Check out VIP offers at MotleyVIP.com.

Local ticket pre-sales start this Thursday, April 23 at 10 a.m. local time before the public on-sale begins on Friday, April 24 at 10 a.m. local time with some dates going on sale on Saturday, April 25.
