Eddie Trunk interviewed KISS guitarist Ace Frehley for his podcast. Quotes from the interview, courtesy of blabbermouth.net, appear below.
Frehley discussing what he thinks about current KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer wearing his makeup:
“[Tommy is] not Ace Frehley by any stretch of the imagination, number one. Number two, what bothers me the most is that I know the new fans that KISS are getting don’t know it. A lot of people that see Tommy up there think he’s the original guy that created the makeup, that wrote great songs and wrote all those solos that he’s performing, but he’s not. He’s just a guy up there copying me and trying to move like me and trying to sing like me and trying to play like me. And that’s what bothers me the most. I mean, the real hardcore fans know. But the new fans, a lot of them don’t know.”
On the fact that he played with drummer Eric Singer who was wearing Peter Criss’ Catman makeup:
That was okay. I mean, Eric’s such a solid drummer, he’s a pleasure to play with, because you know the beat’s always gonna be there.” When asked if it was weird seeing someone else play in Criss’ makeup Ace said, “Well, you know, I don’t see as good as I used to, so when I look back, I can’t tell the difference. [laughs] Just like a lot of fans don’t know…I can’t tell you how many times I get phone calls and people say,’ Hey, Ace, I heard you’re playing here, I heard you’re playing there. Can you get me tickets?’ I go, ‘I’m not in the band anymore.’ Some people, still, are oblivious to that whole thing.”

You bloated jerk. Singer in Criss make-up recreating Kiss ’77 is okay but Tommy isn’t? Trunk should have ripped him a new one. You couldn’t last 4 gigs with what Thayer is putting out you load. New people not knowing? What a moron, of course they do. Book a brick bar in Scranton.
Lighten up, buttercup. It’s just music.
Eddie ain’t ripping anybody…plenty of chances to take the bait but he won’t. And that’s cool, from a professional standpoint hard to attack people your depending on generating your ratings.
I know a 12 year old kid who Ace or Peter were. the first KISS album he ever bought was Sonic Boom.
YEAH RIGHT ACE!!! What next? Are you going to say the guy who is wearing the Peter Criss makeup and costume and playing Peter’s parts & singing Peter’s songs is copying Peter Criss? Where do you come up with this stuff?
He’s OK with another guy in Peter’s make up. His fiancee was trolling all day yesterday for a Reunion on FB , before erasing everything. Guess No tour and an album falling like a rock ??????
i heard tommy also has a hankering for filet o’ fish sandwiches
I’ve never heard anyone say “it’s important” or “very important” more than Eddie Trunk. Whether it’s a blog, a book, a radio show, podcast or That Metal Show, you can always count on Eddie to say it. Loved the Ace podcast but I can still hear Ace breathing so loudly into the mic, geesh. On that note, I am astounded at how much drama these articles about Kiss stir up. I am a frequent poster on here and I am about done with the Kiss articles. Kiss is no longer relevant. They stopped being relevant after the reunion tour. Psycho Circus is one of the five worst Kiss albums in Kisstory and the original four barely played together on it. Kiss will always be one of my favorite bands of all time. From this day forward I am going to appreciate what they once were from 1974 through 2000. Anything after that means nothing. It’s very important to celebrate the band’s mystique during its heyday before there was internet, “reality” tv shows, etc. that’s when it mattered. That’s when it meant something. The meaningless Kiss of today should not undermine what once was one of the greatest rock bands of all time. I believe that many of us, myself included, have gotten caught up in this back & forth jabbing between current and past members of the band. It’s very important that we, the Kiss Army, do not let that happen anymore going forward. Pop in the Cobo Hall concert from 76′ into your DVD or VHS player and watch a hungry band starting to come into their own. Enough negativity!
I find it funny you said “it’s very important” in your post…
You catch on quick Eddie lol….. Keep up the great work!
What. You would have to be blind to think this tommy thayer doesnt try and act like ace frehley
…..I have old cold gin shows from back then he trief his butt off….he is the kind he has to watch his self I think k because at times u might see him try and stand or lean a certain way…….ace was well known for.. but to everyone reading this their is no denying when he gets on tv or photo and throws his thumb up like ace.. that alone is something ace is well known for even back n 70’s.watch his epiphone guitar commercial at the end …this dude is nothing more in my book but imposter .poser…pick ur flavor….. ……I think ace has all right n the world to say what he wants when some moron chooses to mimic him…..all I can say to tommy is u should have thought about that gig before u took it . Theres no way ur gonna do what u did end up doing and not tick off a lot of ppl….some buy into it but I think its a small margin kiss is in no way in he’ll bigger today as a live band or musically bigger then when ace Napster was in….their last two albums I dont own and won’t own them but from what I heard its again tommy now stealing his guitar tone…what a total loser
