Excited to announce I have a brand new podcast exclusive interview with Angel guitarist Punky Meadows posting tomorrow on The Eddie Trunk Podcast! Outside of a few interviews Punky has been quite a reclusive figure for decades now. If you were into Angel, who released 6 albums on Casablanca in the 70’s, this is an interview you will love! He talks about all sorts of stuff including his offer to join Kiss, what he has been up to since the band broke up, and what he is about to do next. I often say Angel is a band people either worshiped or never really heard of since they never had a big hit single. But even if you aren’t in the know about this bands music and groundbreaking stage shows you should have a listen and discover what they were about. If Angel had lasted another couple years (they ended around 1980 with an appearance in the film Foxes) until the birth of MTV their story may have been very different. It will be available as all my podcast are free and worldwide starting tomorrow (just after Midnight Pacific tonight) via Itunes or at www.podcastone.com to stream or download. Thanks for making my podcast such a success in it’s early stages. It is the perfect forum to do an in depth interview with an artist like Punky for the world to hear! Check out all the past episodes as well, all 100% free!

Hi Eddie. Off topic but I see Krokus has announced a couple US dates in 2015 (L.A. and IL area). Any news on a full US tour? Thanks!
Honestly I just don’t think there is enough interest for a full tour. Many bands do not tour in reality at that level. Weekend stuff. Those are likely a few pick up dates because they are doing the MOR Cruise
I have always liked Angel. I also love how Zappa pokes fun at them on his Zappa In New York album.
Fantastic podcast, I was a huge Angel fan. The 1st Angel album I bought was “On Earth As It Is In Heaven”…I got because of an ad in “Circus” magazine. I too never got a chance to see them… Iowa in the 70’s was a was a rough place to live when is came to seeing the bands that weren’t Van Halen, KISS or Aerosmith. Punky answered a lot of questions I had about the how and why they never quite made it. I would have liked to hear about Mickie Jones and why he left the band, but maybe that was a off limits topic.
I still listen to the albums to this day and to me they still hold up. Starz is another band that should have made it.
So thanks again for the great interview and keep it comin’.
This was my favorite podcast so far, because it was the first time you had a guest on that I never would have predicted (maybe other than Vandenberg). I hope to hear my interviews with guys who are a bit off the radar. Punky is definitely a bit of a lost legend.
I have to disagree about “Live Without a Net” as a place to start. It’s true that it’s a cross-section of material, but it’s not one of the great live albums or anything.
I think the place to start – especially your listeners – would have to be the first two albums – ‘Angel’ and ‘Helluva Band’. Those two albums are absolute classics that everyone should own. They are heavy, progressive, inventive – really different and expansive….very Queen-like in spots. Just absolutely fantastic albums.
I think the problem is that as they went along, they got less heavy and less interesting – which is the opposite trajectory of Kiss. The first three Kiss albums are classic, but they are basically simple down-to-earth hard rock. After Alive!, they got more interesting and had a wider vision.
Angel peaked with those first two albums. ‘On Earth…’ is a good album, but not on par with the first two. And ‘White Hot’ and ‘Sinful’, to me, are just below average. I know they have their backers, but they’re just not strong records in my opinion.
Either way – great, great podcast. Happy holidays to you & all the fellow listeners and rockers.
Nice post Jeff. I agree with your assessment. The first one I bought was hellava band. Feelin’ right, the fortune, dr. Ice…damn, I might as well say ALL the songs on that album have great guitar work by Mr. Meadows. Can you feel it from On earth…. Is also a stellar track. Frank had a unique voice for sure. Both second albums by them and KISS are such heavy great albums. I just wish hotter than hell was produced a bit better. The ’70s were a great time to be a teenager with all the great music there was.
