n a new interview with Poland’s MetalSide, legendary rock drummer Carmine Appice believes that Metallica was the first true heavy metal band.
He said (as per blabbermouth.net), “I consider heavy metal starting with Metallica. Before all that, it was hard rock. The crunchy guitars, the buzztone guitar and the double bass following guitar, that’s what started heavy metal. Everything else before that — Mötley Crüe and Van Halen, Blue Murder — everything’s hard rock. Heavy hard rock. But metal comes from the guitar for me.”

In my humble opinion, I once again disagree with this statement, just as I did with Roger Daltrey‘s claim, that it was The Who, that invented the genre.
Metallica maybe one of the premier bands to have started thrash metal, which is a sub-sect of heavy metal, but they did not invent heavy metal. I once again, digress to Rattlehead that states it was Judas Priest. One can also claim that Priest had a hand in inventing thrash. Has Appice ever listened to Exciter, which was from 1978?
Finally, of course, Metallica always credit the influence of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, as big influences upon their sound.
Metallica put the roof on the Heavy Metal House (As I stated last week in my comment)
Not the first, but a major developer.
I love your comment…
Thank you once again Dana!
How can Carmine even claim Metallica was the first heavy metal band when it’s common knowledge Metallica was influenced by the New Wave of British HEAVY METAL??!! Metallica WAS NOT the first heavy metal band. IMO, the first heavy metal band was Judas Priest. Priest’s music stripped away all the heavy blues based rock of Sabbath to become the first true heavy metal band. No band in the 70s was as heavy as Priest.
Metallica may have been the first thrash heavy metal band….thanks to Dave Mustaine, the pioneer of thrash metal.
I agree Dana. Sabbath, Priest, then everyone else…
In regards to the yet again un-necessary childish “name calling” in last weeks Question of the Week, just please stop!! Went through this a few weeks ago!!
As Dana said, EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion weather you agree or not!! People may not agree with what I say and that’s totally fine! Doesn’t give me the right to call someone s–t for brains!! Inmature and classless to say the least…
Steppenwolf! Just listen to “Born To Be Wild” from 1968! I grew up on that song! 😉
