    Rap icon, Run DMC? WTF?????????????

    • John Stockman on

Giant WTF on this one. Just because he did something with Aerosmith…bullcrap! (C)Rap? Yeah, some bands/guests are not “metal” in the true sense of the genre, but at least they’re actually musicians and/or can sing on key. “it’s not a song if you don’t SING, and you don’t have a band if you don’t play an instrument.” Crappy kiddie-poetry with sampled music that other people wrote/sung/performed, how is that even remotely related to metal, much less music? How many lost any respect they had for Aerosmith when that ridiculous Walk This Way rendition was done with those rapper guys. If you look up sell-out, that rap Walk This Way version comes up. I’ve never questioned Eddie’s choice for a guest, I think he does pretty good considering the genre and all it’s variations. But a rapper? Stupidest guest choice EVER Eddie!

    • Doug R. on

My words exactly John! Sing, or shut up! Rappers don’t play instruments, don’t sing, don’t write any music, they just “sample” or steal from real musicians! Rock on brother! 😉

Doug R, I would love to hear Stevie Wonder talk about metal. Fact is, most black people don’t listen to metal. So, yeah, purely from a sociological standpoint I am interested. You have good taste in music Doug R, no question about it, our few disagreements notwithstanding. Me, I like a lot of rap, the hard stuff. It’s really the flip side of metal. As far as stealing, goodness, listen to those early Zeppelin records, Deep Purple, stealing is so prevalent in art, sports, music, really, it’s not the point, the point is if the person has enough talent to do something unique with it. Those Motown guys stole from each other.
But I agree, nothing beats old school R&B, that was real music.
Vic Johnson, I will check into it, I told you I would, look just get off my case man!!! : )

    • Doug R. on

Shannon, being influenced by another artist is one thing, yes sometimes even legends like Zeppelin coincidently may have “stolen” a few notes here & there from another song, but 80-90% of all of Zeppelin’s music was original. There are no instruments in rap/hip-hop, there is no singing in rap/hip-hop, just sampling/stealing, bitching, complaining, talking about their “HO’S”, promoting violent aggression, boring, BS, meaningless, garbage, gibberish. Rappers are not artists, nothing original, at all. Now if you want to hear real artists, listen to The Gap Band, I call them Heavy Funkin’ Metal! Rick James, he’ll Funk you up! Stevie Wonder is the definition of a real artist, not some low-life, disrespecting idiot like a Kanye West, or whatever his name is. Real classy guy. Musically, there’s no connection between Rock/Metal and Rap/Hip-Hop whatsoever. I only recommended those DVD’s because you said you never heard of Vic Johnson, well, now you have! Enjoy the music. 🙂

Doug R…First: Zeppelin’s music is original in that they did their own thing, but, especially in the beginning, they wholesale stole from blues musicians. Nothing coincidental in the slightest. And who cares is what I’m saying, that doesn’t change their stature one bit. 2. No instruments, so what? it’s a different aesthetic taking place here. It’s about the final product. And there are some very talented rap/hip hop artists who compose their own music and write the raps and everything. Forget Kanye! Facial Makaveli is a genius and no one, it seems but me, has even heard of him. He should be huge. This stuff you are saying about rap being noise and garbage is exactly what people say about metal. You just don’t get the aesthetic, it’s not for you, that’s cool, but don’t lump the whole kit and kaboodle with Kanye West! Facial uses the auto-tune as a tool, sparingly, for effect, he mixes machines with real instruments, but again, it’s about the composition that’s taking place. This isn’t rock, so the real instrument thing is not important. There is some great synthesizer music, Stevie Wonder employed synths quite a bit. Look at Who’s Next…3. Love all the funk and r&b artists you mentioned, you definitely have a good ear for music. 4. Thanks for telling me about Vic Johnson, I will definitely check out his stuff, with Sammy, right? Doug R!!

    • Doug R. on

Shannon!! We’ll never agree on the “Rap”, but other than that, it’s all good! 😉

    • shannon mehaffey on

Come on Doug R, maybe he’s a metal fan. I’ll get back to you regrading Cat Scratch Fever and Weekend Warriors, but Free For All, so far, for me, is the pinnacle of Ted’s mission…been going through my vinyl..and albums that have surprised are Styx’s Crystal Ball, and the first Starz and Angel…Doug R, my best albums list is being compiled ….

    • Doug R. on

Shannon, dude, if he’s a metal fan, he can sit in the audience, why interview a rapper that nobody wants to see? or HEAR! Don’t want to see or HEAR any of them! There have been comedians on TMS, baseball players, (Mike Piazza), wrestlers/musicians, (Jericho) but a rapper? No F’N way! I’ll skip that episode. You know who I would love to see on TMS? Vic Johnson! now there’s a REAL musician! One of my top 10 guitarists of all time. I’ve seen him play live with Sammy 8 times, when he starts wailing on “Rock Candy”, F’N goose bumps! And he a damn good singer as well. Someday maybe I’ll post my top 50-100 albums of all time, hopefully there will be enough space on the board! Rock on Shannon, keep “Workin’ Hard, Playin’ Hard”, cheers! 😉

    • shannon mehaffey on

Vic Johnson? I’ve never heard of him! I’ll have to check into that…I, for one, am interested in a black rapper who pioneered a genre speaking about metal…that’s way more interesting to me than the same stories about wearing diapers at a concert, throwing poop, this isn’t the Howard Stern show, but sometimes, it seems like it is.

    • Doug R. on

Geez, you think you know a guy! You’ve never heard of Vic Johnson? I guess you haven’t seen the Red Rocker in the last 16-17 years. Trust me, pick up Sammy’s Birthday Bash DVD, and “Livin’ It Up, Live In St. Louis” DVD, you won’t be disappointed. To each his own, but I can’t imagine for the life of me, why you would be interested in hearing anything a rapper has to say. Black, white, whatever, IMO, and most, rap is not a genre, because it’s not music. And once again before the BS starts, I have no problem admitting this on this board, I love a lot of old school R&B, Motown, and Jazz, at least those folks sing, AND play instruments. They don’t bitch & complain, “sample”, or steal real musicians “music”. Outside of the Rock & Metal world, my favorite singer/musician is Stevie Wonder, you want talent, there you go.

    • shannon mehaffey on

Top Ten guitarists? Geez Doug R, he’s O.K., he’s a tasteful player, but he wouldn’t even make my starting lineup, he’s a second stringer, maybe even third…what’s cool is he can sing lead though. And Sammy, man that guy can still hit those freaking notes like a maniac…I’m definitely catching his next show..hopefully solo, not that Chickenfoot horseshit. : )

    • Doug R. on

Second stringer Shannon? How did you listen to all his work so quickly? Take your time, don’t rush through, start with “Red Voodoo”, and go forward, and no skipping! And when you can, check out those DVD’s, you have to hear Vic live, even better than studio! No love for Chickenfoot? Horseshit? Wow! Anthony & Satriani sound like they’ve been playing together for 30 years! And Sammy sounds just as strong as ever. Especially on the first Chickenfoot album, now “GET YOUR BUZZ ON!” Well I’m off to see Billy Joel tonight at MSG, “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me”, cheers! 🙂

    • shannon mehaffey on

Fair enough Doug R, I will do some more research into Vic’s playing. Sammy still sings like a banshee, it’s incredible..Billy Joel, I have a few of his records, hopefully he plays Big Shot, Pressure, and my favorite All for Leyna.

    • Doug R. on

No Big Shot or Leyna this time, but Pressure, and over 20 other greats! 😉

    • Medved on

I said the same thing about Andrew Dice Clay. Two comedians on the show is enough.

  • Medved on

Woo hoo! Zakk Wylde on TMS again for the umpteenth time! Can’t wait!

  • Brian bulakites on

Wish they’d stop having the same people on. I love zakk,Ace and Chris but want to see new faces on the show.

  • Tyler Adams on

I said the same thing about the rap icon coming on. WTF is doing coming on a hard rock and metal show? Sure he did 1 song with Aerosmith but it was a remake of an Aerosmith song. I guess will just have to wait and see what its all about.

I do happen to agree that new faces would be nice to see or if you get old faces, get them to do other stuff like guest musician. Ace should do the guest guitarist spot. Same with Kerry King and Zakk Wylde. I do like seeing other members of bands coming on instead of the same people But overall I am super excited to have TMS back and super excited about the guest coming on and can’t wait for the first show to air!

    • John Stockman on

Can’t wait for the new season too. Some old favs, some new ones. Mark Farner, Michael Batio! Great choices, along with the other first-time guests. Definitely not on-board with any rap, don’t care who it is. There’s many other shows that cater to that, not needed on That Metal Show. The backlash about having Ted Nugent on, some were like “I hate him and I’ll never watch TMS again!” Hey, at least he can actually sing and play lead. This is way too far away from any semblance of hard rock, metal or music in general. First time I’ve ever NOT wanted a guest that Eddie has/had on.

  • James K. on

Mark from Grand Funk Railroad and Max Cavalera, HELL YEAH!!! The guest list is great, but one guest is a puzzling choice: Darryl from RUN DMC? Is he in a metal band now?

    • Doug R. on

Hey James, yeah F’N Run DMC? Are they kidding us? I can promise you, that’s 1 episode I won’t be watching, ever! A rapper on TMS? I don’t care why or whatever, what a disgrace, a waste, and a slap in the face to all of us! I don’t care who else is going to be on that episode, they won’t be getting any ratings from me, or my buddies. Take care James, keep it real, keep it ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!

    • James K. on

You know Doug, with all due respect to Darryl, he has no business on a show about metal and hard rock. Matt Nathansen, I think that’s his name, was on the show and he’s not a metal or hard rock artist and I thought that was wasted time that could have been given to a great deserving metal artist that doesn’t get the chance normally to go on a popular show and talk about their music. I feel the same way about Darryl being on the show. It’s nothing personal against him cause he seems like a nice guy and he’s a pioneer in the rap world. But that’s it: THE RAP WORLD. Not the metal world. I wouldn’t expect or want to see a country artist on THAT METAL SHOW and so I don’t want to see a rap artist either. I respect how they’re trying to diversify the show with a wide variety of guests but this may be stretching a little too far.
      Take care bud.

    • Doug R. on

James, I hear ya, but it supposed to be “all things hard rock & heavy metal”. Run DMC? Never! Never thought TMS would give in and bend over, but I guess today it really is true, everybody has to. Cheers dude, Rock on!
