These are worth buying for the live stuff. I discovered Metallica by accident after Kill ‘ Em All was first released. I was in this big, cool record store (remember those?) in my town and my friend found that album and asked me who it was. I had no idea. The album cover was cool: A hammer laying in a pool of blood with a shadow of a hand above it. The song titles were cool: The Four Horsemen, Metal Militia, Seek And Destroy. Then I saw the band photo…They looked and dressed like us and everyone we were friends with did! I was sold. I bought the album that day. It changed my life when I heard it for the first time.

  • D. Comiskey on

Holy. Sh*t. The live shows alone are worth it! Frankly, I don’t see a need to mess with these albums. Like Megadeth did with some of their previous titles, like RIP, your brain gets used to hearing an album a certain way. Esp after 20+ years. Most re-masters just don’t sound good to me. Metallica SHOULD have started this process with re-mastering/mixing Justice to get the bass in. Then again, that sound is so unique to that album and it’s been with us nearly 30 years. I don’t know if I would like it or not.

    • DR Is Live on

I’ve said it before here, the mix on Justice is absolutely brutal. I can’t even listen to it it’s so bad. I cannot believe after the sound on Puppets, which was tremendous, that they came out with the production and engineering on Justice. When the black album came out, they had fixed it. But Justice was the beginning of their production woes that plagued them later.

The price for the deluxe sets are $149!!! I’m a big fan of Metallica but come on man. That’s a lot of money
I’m with Comiskey and DR about remasters. Why are all these bands re-releasing stuff for ridiculously high prices and even worse, myself included, why have so many of us bought all of it in recent years? There’s obviously a market for it or else bands wouldn’t keep doing it. If anything these remastered upgrades should be available as free downloads or lower priced cds, etc.

  • Taskerofpuppets on

They seem late to the game when it comes to this remastered stuff. I’ve been a devoted fan since 88′, but I think the “deluxe” pkg is $25 too much . The posters sound cool, though and the live shows will be a cool listen.

Agree w/ above, AJFA needs to be remixed. I’ll stick w/ originals. Can’t stand most remasters – way too loud w/ dynamics squashed. Although the recent Led Zeppelin remasters on CD were really well done.
