JUDAS PRIEST’S METAL GOD ROB HALFORD DISCUSSES HIS VOICE AND HIS FAVORITE SCREAM

robhalford400 Blabbermouth.net reports:

On September 3rd, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford called in to Chaz & AJ, the morning radio talk show program on 99.1 WPLR, a rock radio station broadcasting from Milford, Connecticut.

When asked what his favorite scream is in all the songs that he record, Halford replied, “Actually, there’s a new scream for everybody on the new Redeemer Of Souls album, we have a track called Halls Of Valhalla, and there’s a little moment in that song where it kind of breaks down and I do this ungodly, unearthly scream and I don’t know where it came from. In fact, we kept it from one of the demo rehearsals that we were doing, because it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime things that you do once and you can’t exactly get it right again. So check that out, because that’s my current favorite heavy metal scream.”

When questioned if he is still able to pull off the scream every night in concert, Halford replied, “Yeah, I am, I am. And it’s one of those things where I love it so much and I am just so stoked by standing on stage still, 40 years later, still screaming my head off and having the time of my life, along with Glenn [Tipton] and Richie [Faulkner] and Scott [Travis] and Ian [Hill].”

In a July 2014 interview with the Birmingham Mail, Halford stated about how his vocal performance has evolved over the years: “The voice changes obviously. The trick is just to look after it — don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do drugs. I look after my voice these days, and still belt it out. When I was a raging drunk and drug addict, I really abused my voice. Thank God I realized I was doing some stupid things. You can damage your voice, and find that you can’t do softer things in your music.”

    1. I’ll take Victim of Changes and the beginning of Savage.

Halford is one of kind, and that voice…well, there are no words.

      Dana from ET.com 🙂

    2. Dave, don’t kill me, but it not my favorite (says while ducking)-LOL!

My favorite Priest album is Screaming for Vengeance. Actually, that is my all time favorite album, period 🙂

      Thank you for asking 🙂

      D 🙂

    3. My favorite is more recent–Angel of Retribution. A close second would be Stained Class. Third would be Screaming for Vengeance. See? That’s what I love about TMS. The debate about which albums should be number one, etc…LOL

    4. Dana

No need for you to be ducking, I won’t be throwing anything!!

Especially after the nice comments you made regarding my comments/opinions of the Redeemer of Souls album a few months back (I don’t like it).

    5. Hello Dana, Screaming is a real good one. I love most of the albums from Priest including Turbo, Ram It Down, and Nostradamus as well. I like it when bands do something different. I would pick a different favorite Priest album every day of the week lol. Oh, and in reference to another post it takes a good, classy woman to see the gentlemen =) and that is true for you.

    6. Good call Dana. Screaming is one of the all time great metal albums period. I love every song on angel of retribution. In my high school days,, although I sometimes grudgingly admit it, Turbo was one of my go to records. I think Nostradamus is an absolute masterpiece, and a record I grab for long road trips or long night shifts at work. Truly great band and a legendary voice. Oh yeah, redeemer of souls is epic. Thanks Dana and Eddie for doing what you do. My family and I never miss that metal show or Eddies show on Sirius. Although I think it should be back on the Boneyard where it belongs.

    7. That’s why he is “The Metal God”.
Can’t wait ’till next month, dying to hear him hit that note on Valhalla! 🙂

    8. HALLS OF VALHALLA is a great song and the closest thing to a throwback on REDEEMER. A good time to be an aging priest fan with a Ted Kennedy image. DANA confessed and professed her admiration of TURBO to yours truly so I’ll throw my hat in the ring with the best scream being WILD NIGHTS, HOT & CRAZY DAYS. The whole sing features mild screaming throughout. DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR from SIN AFTER SIN does that too.
