Matthew Wilkening of Ultimate Classic Rock reports:

Sammy Hagar says he wrote a new song called Thank You, using a guitar melody that Eddie Van Halen showed him, in a recent dream.

“I shouldn’t be hyping it now,” Hagar tells UCR. “Nobody knows this but Michael AnthonyJason [Bonham] and Vic [Johnson]. About two months ago, I had this dream and Eddie came. We were in a room like this, [with] a bunch of people around. It was just like he’d been gone. It was not like he was passed, but he had just been out of my life and we hadn’t seen each other for a while. He’s going, ‘Man, let’s write some music!’ I said, ‘Yeah, f–k it, man. Here, let’s go!'”

Hagar says they “went over into a corner, in this room. He had a guitar and he played me this thing. It was like this lick – [just like] the last lick that Eddie Van Halen showed me, when I went back for the [2004] reunion tour and when he was a mess. I said, ‘Eddie, show me your newest s–t,’ because every time I’d be around him I’d say, ‘Show me your newest s–t.’ He’d say, ‘Oh, check this out!'”

In the dream, “he did this harmonic thing and he slid it up to a chord, like a slide guitar. We wrote a song with that lick,” Hagar adds. “I remembered it. I got up in the morning and I wrote the song. It’s called, Thank You. I used the f–kin’ lick that he showed me in the song. I told Jason, ‘I just really don’t know what to say lyrically.’ I’ve got goosebumps, head to toe, [talking about it]. So, I wrote it [about that experience], and we’ll do that song someday.”

“Thank You” came together too late for inclusion on his upcoming Crazy Times album. But when it does arrive, Hagar intends to share the songwriting credit with his former bandmate.

“Now, that’s going to be an Eddie-influenced song, to the point that I’m going to co-write it with him. I’m going to give him credit and then maybe we’ll donate the money to charity, whatever,” Hagar says. “You see, I feel so embarrassed about it because everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, look at Sammy trying to capitalize on Eddie.’ No, I’m not. You don’t understand. This was a real f–kin’ dream, and I told you exactly what happened in it.”

Crazy Times, Hagar’s second album with the Circle, arrives on Sept. 30. The title tune and a cover of Elvis Costello’s, Pump It Up, have already been released. The band is currently touring the U.S. with support from George Thorogood.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame®-inducted, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Sammy Hagar today debuted the video for Pump it Up, with his Billboard chart-topping supergroup The Circle – watch the official video below. Pump it Up, a cover of Elvis Costello and the Attractions 1978 classic, was recorded live during a warm-up session, and on the encouragement of the album’s producer Dave Cobb, who also plays rhythm guitar on the track, it made the album. Pump it Up is available today on all digital and streaming platforms.  The CD and vinyl configurations, including a translucent red color vinyl exclusive, are available for pre-order here.
Upon the release of the album’s title track Crazy Times in July (listen here), Guitar World said, “Front and center we have Hagar’s voice, … all syrup and gravel and soul. Stick your best pair of headphones on and listen to the track – you can hear that this choice is money well spent.” The album, set for release on September 30th through Ume, finds Hagar, fellow Hall of Famer and longtime bassist Michael Anthony, Grammy-winning drummer Jason Bonham and Grammy-winning guitar virtuoso Vic Johnson changing course, traveling to Nashville’s RCA Studio A to record with Cobb. The eight-time Grammy Award-winning producer, who grew up obsessively listening to Hagar, set out to record “the definitive Sammy Hagar record.” The new album includes 10 songs, nine of which Hagar wrote or co-wrote, along with the notable cover, Pump It Up. As Hagar explained, “We went in the studio with six songs and came out with 10. We ended up cowriting three songs with Dave Cobb and he played rhythm guitar on every track.  Pump it Up was a surprise, that when we played back we all went ‘that sounds f’ing great’.”
In support of the album’s release, Sammy Hagar & The Circle will headline the Illinois State Fair on August 21st, before returning to their critically acclaimed Crazy Times U.S. tour on August 23rd at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Michigan.  Produced by Live Nation, the tour hits amphitheaters in major cities throughout the U.S. before wrapping on October 1st in Sacramento, CA. Following the tour, Hagar will celebrate his 75th birthday at his annual week of Birthday Bash concerts at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Visit for ticket information.

Grim Reaper singer Steve Grimmett has died at the age of 62.

Grimmett’s passing was confirmed by his brother Mark Grimmett, who wrote on social media: “I don’t really know where to start so I guess I will just come right out with it. It is with great sadness, and a very heavy heart, that I have to tell you all, as many of you know him, my very talented brother Steve Grimmett, very sadly passed away today, my heart goes out to Millie his wife, my Mum, and Dad, Russell , Sami and Ethan . I will miss you more than words will ever say, love you bro xx.”

His son Russ Grimmett also shared the news, writing, “We can’t begin to put into words the current feelings. But, as dad was so well known, the news is starting to reach out earlier than we would have liked. Unfortunately, our dad passed away today and leaves a massive hole in the world and our hearts. We are utterly heartbroken. Sleep tight dad. We we always love you xxx.”

Producer Max Norman, who worked on the band’s classic third album, 1987’s Rock You To Hell, weighed in on the singer’s passing, writing: “Very distressed to hear that old friend and singer for Grim Reaper, Steve Grimmett has left us… A terrific vocalist, and all around perfect gentleman – you will be missed my friend. Condolences to Mark and Millie and friends and family – a very very sad loss…”

Grimmett’s passing comes more than five years after he had his right leg partially amputated in January 2017 when an infected wound on his foot spread to the bones in his leg partway through the group’s five-week tour of South America. The life-saving surgery was carried out in Ecuador and the frontman was in hospital for just over a month while fans raised $14,000 to bring him home after his insurance company refused to pay because of the type of work he was doing.

One of Grim Reapers most popular, and well known songs, See You Hell, from their 1984 eponymous album, can be seen here.
