THIRD ANNUAL “RIDE FOR RONNIE” MOTORCYCLE RALLY AND CONCERT RAISES $40,000 FOR RONNIE JAMES DIO STAND UP AND SHOUT CANCER FUND

Despite the continuous threat of rain, the 3rd Annual Ride For Ronnie Motorcycle Rally and Concert, held on Sunday, May 7th,attracted motorcycle enthusiasts and rock music fans alike and raised $40,000 for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. Dio Cancer Fund co-founder and president Wendy Dio led the procession of some 200 motorcycle riders for the morning RIDE from Harley-Davidson of Glendale to Los Encinos Park in Encino. She was joined by Sons of Anarchy actors Emilio Rivera (and also star of the forthcoming Mayans MC series), Sean McNabb (who also performed with Lynch Mob at the concert) and Star Fields, as well as actors Al Coronel (The Last Ship) and Chris Bruno (The Dead Zone) and musicians Lita Ford, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, who claimed to be on the oldest bike in the RIDE and Xavier Muriel (Buckcherry) plus Dio Cancer Fund Medical Director Dr. Sandy Kapoor and KLOS Radio “Horns Up” show personality Stew Herrera.

The afternoon of live music following the ride, hosted by radio and television personality Eddie Trunk, was kicked off by the trio of rockin’ schoolteachers known as No Small Children. Performances by Sonia Harley, The Loveless, Eddie Money and Rough Cutt followed. Rough Cutt concluded its set with a performance of Stars, the song released in 1986 by Hear ‘N Aid, an organization spearheaded by the original Dio band to raise money for famine relief in Africa. Rough Cutt members Paul Shortino, Dave Alford, Amir Derakh, Chris Hager, and Matt Thorne were joined on stage by Lita Ford, Ronnie James Dio’s cousin David “Rock” Feinstein, Brittany Denaro (Vixen), Patrick Stone (Budderside), Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob), Joe Retta, Bjorn Englen and Scott Warren of Dio Disciples, Ace Von Johnson (Faster Pussycat) and legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads’ brother Kelle Rhoads for the song.

Next up, Steven Adler and Friends took to the stage for an all-star jam featuring the Guns N’ Roses drummer along with Mike Devin (Whitesnake), Lita Ford, Robert Sarzo (Hurricane), Alex Grossi (Quiet Riot), Patrick Stone (Budderside) and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner and former Dio guitarist), playing three Guns N’ Roses hits.

Rousing sets by Dio Disciples and headliners LYNCH MOB rounded out the afternoon of music. The threatening skies finally let loose during Lynch Mob’s last song, drenching the audience as they headed out of the park.

A silent auction, raffle and live auction, which included Eddie Money’s stage-worn full-length leather trenchcoat from his 2000 Millennium Tour and a Great White acoustic guitar signed by the band members brought in additional donations during the event.

Wendy Dio and Dr. Sandy Kapoor presented a check for $25,000 to Dr. David Wong of the UCLA School of Dentistry to further his team’s research into the development of a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer. Dr. Wong told the crowd that the recognized support from the Dio Cancer Fund has already brought his project additional funding.

The family of Randy Rhoads-his sister Kathy Rhoads D’Argenzio and brother Kelle Rhoads-joined Wendy Dio on stage to show their support for the work of the Dio Cancer Fund, presenting the organization with a donation in memory of their late brother.

RITCHIE BLACKMORE’S RAINBOW RELEASE SOME STUDIO MATERIAL

Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow have released their first new studio material in 22 years. The two songs are a re-working of the band’s 1981 hit I Surrender — originally sung by Joe Lynn Turner, now voiced by new singer Ronnie Romero — and a cover of Edward Elgar’s famous Land Of Hope And Glory, a patriotic song written in 1902, and perhaps best known for its use at the close of The BBC’s annual Last Night At The Proms broadcast.

In April, Blackmore told Japan’s Burn Magazine, “We recorded some songs for Blackmore’s Night and two songs with the new singer for Rainbow. I wrote one new song, and also recorded one of the old ones. Ronnie, who is in Madrid now, added his vocals and sent it back. Rather than make an album, we may release as singles.”

Rainbow’s performance at the Genting Arena in Birmingham from June last year is to be released on June 9th as a double album titled Live In Birmingham 2016.

Rainbow also have four live UK shows scheduled for next month.

AEROSMTH GUITARIST JOE PERRY SAID THE BAND HAS “KINDA CHANGED OUR MINDS” ABOUT RETIREMENT

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has revealed the band “kinda changed our minds” over splitting up after what’s been billed as a farewell tour.

He has also suggested that the prospect of remaining active for their 50th anniversary in 2020 is one of the ideas that’s driving them.

They’d already kept the Aero-Vederci Baby! schedule open to extension, and Perry had recently talked up the chances of recording another album, while frontman Steven Tyler said last month that he couldn’t say “for sure” whether it was really the end.

Speaking to the NME, Perry says, “We thought it was going to be a good idea, when we first started plotting the European run. We were going to do South America and the States for five months, and we thought, ‘We’re getting near the end here.’

“We all have lives outside the band, we grew up together – went from being kids in the apartment to a long and storied career. So we thought, ‘It’s time.’”

They began to rethink their plans during the South American dates. “We were doing interviews and we couldn’t f–king say it,” Perry recalls. “We were looking at each other going, ‘Are we really going to say, ‘This is the farewell tour?’ So we kinda changed our minds.’”

On the subject of how much longer Aerosmith might last, he says, “God may have other plans – judging by how he’s treated us over the last 48 years, I’d like to think he’s going to let us see 50. But you can’t guarantee that.”

In a separate interview, Tyler tells Associated Press, “I don’t know if it’ll continue for ever – but as long as the band is playing the way it is right now, it’s going to be for a long time.”

FORMER VAN HALEN MANAGER, NOEL MONK, DISHES ON THE BAND IN “RUNNIN’ WITH THE DEVIL” OUT JUNE 13TH

Excerpt courtesy of Confidential of the New York Daily News:

Eddie Van Halen is one of the best guitarists of his generation, but he might have trouble passing a sixth grade health test. Former Van Halen manager Noel Monk recounts the time Eddie was hit with a paternity suit while engaged to Valerie Bertinelli.

The fretboard whiz tearfully acknowledged he’d had encounters with the woman — but they were limited to oral sex, mostly administered in his car. “Do you think,” he asked Monk, “I could have gotten her pregnant?”

Monk shares the tale in Runnin’ With the Devil, a forthcoming new book about his years with the band, from 1978 to 1985. You might figure there’d be some sex, drugs and trashed hotel rooms involved, and Monk doesn’t fail to deliver.

There are groupies aplenty — including the Ketchup Queens, a pair of beauties with a condiment fetish, and another pair who serviced the entire road crew in order to get backstage.

Eddie was a prodigy at substance abuse as well as the guitar. Monk says that on the band’s 1984 tour, Eddie had a personal dealer who flew around the world to supply him with drugs, mostly coke.

He was a prodigious drinker as well — which came into play at his wedding to Bertinelli, whose family were devout Catholics. The newlyweds disappeared after the ceremony, and Monk writes that he found them in a bathroom, Eddie throwing up in the toilet while Bertinelli, in her wedding gown with tears streaming down her cheeks, cradled his head.

Meanwhile, his drummer brother Alex was a serious alcoholic, according to Monk. And David Lee Roth could go off the rails: Monk writes that on a 1981 tour he got so drunk, nasty and out of control, tearing up a hotel room, that the crew had to put him in a straitjacket.

Roth was a complex figure, whose behavior reflected that he was “at heart an entitled rich kid,” Monk writes. He once took a shine to a woman he’d had a few encounters with — he thought things could go further, but according to Monk, Roth had VD at the time and had likely given it to her. Feeling bad, the chivalrous front man asked Monk to call the woman and apologize on his behalf. (Monk says he refused, and told him to send flowers.)

Monk was ultimately fired by the band, as it was imploding from Roth’s ego and the brothers’ addictions. His book will be realized on June 13th.
