12/14/13: EDDIE TRUNK’S TOP 10 RELEASES OF 2013

Hard to believe we are close to the end of 2013 already. So as usual I am posting my top 10 personal albums of the year almost passed. I hope you check out some of the stuff below if you missed it and share similar taste. I wouldn’t say 2013 was a great year for new music, but there were some solid albums for sure. I feature a ton of new music every week in both radio shows. It is SO important to get the word out on this stuff since so little gets mainstream airplay and sales are so minimal these days. In a couple weeks I’ll be doing my Year In Review special to end 2013 spotlighting my favorites and many more that were released in the past year all in one show. So here are my top 10 for 2013 and as usual hope I didn’t forget anything!

1: The Winery Dogs

Easily my favorite of the year, and NOT because they are friends and I had something to do with their formation! Stands to reason as a fan of all three members I would like the album, but even I couldn’t have anticipated an album of songs this strong when I suggested Richie Kotzen to Portnoy and Sheehan when their attempted band with John Sykes fell apart. I knew what Kotzen was capable of for sure as a massive fan of his solo work the last 10 years, but even I had no idea this could gel so well and so quickly. The playing is of course all top notch with three virtuosos in the band, but that can also turn an album into a wank off fest and lose songs. This album creates the perfect balance of amazing playing but never at the expense of great SONGS. Production top notch and mixed by brilliantly by Jay Ruston, one of my favorites in that end of the business. I have always known Kotzen was an amazing singer and player, many only knew his as a player. So it was great to see so many let in on the secret of his vocal ability through this album. Richie was the least known guy in this band but that all changed with this albums release and he became somewhat of a 25 year overnight sensation. Just had lunch with him last week and he told me how his solo albums have increased in sales which is great to hear as people finally find out more about this incredible all around talent. By no means do I want to overshadow the amazing contributions from Portnoy and Sheehan. This would not be the masterpiece it is without all three of these guys singing, playing and writing! It’s just that Kotzen as singer, guitarist and writer was the wildcard in this whole thing and he delivered Ace’s all the way in every way. Not a bad song on the album. I’d also suggest if you have the US version to seek out a bonus track from the Japanese edition called “Criminal”. Great song and it was criminal it was left off the US version. Many skeptics wonder if this band has legs. All indications are they do, with more tour dates on sale now next year. After that it’s anyone’s guess and I hope for many more albums. But whatever happens in the future they made an amazing debut that was easily my favorite release of 2013. And that would still be the case if they weren’t friends and if I had nothing to do with it!

2: Alter Bridge: Fortress

Band gets better and heavier with every album. Mark Tremonti’s solo debut was one of my top 10 of 2012. This album has those same amazing riffs and playing coupled with equally amazing playing and singing by Myles Kennedy. The rhythm section of Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips driving everything perfectly. Great production as well from Elvis Baskette that is crushing but not at the expense of dynamics. An epic incredible 4th album from Alter Bridge who I can not wait to see live and let’s hope America embraces them like Europe has already where they can headline arenas.

3: Black Star Riders: All Hell Breaks Loose

What was Thin Lizzy wisely changed their name to BSR when they decided to make new music. New music that channels the greatness of Lizzy with a fresh coat of paint. Ricky Warwick shows his love and influence of Lynott while still very much bringing his own approach to the band. Damon Johnson and classic era Lizzy member Scott Gorham deliver those classic dual solos all over the album. Reagrdless if you are a classic Lizzy fan or just a fan of great well played hard rock that channels all that was great about Thin Lizzy while still being fresh and new, this album was a very impressive debut for sure.

4: Buckcherry: Confessions

An ambitious concept album and one very personal to singer Josh Todd. Also turned out to be the best Buckcherry album since the comeback 15. If you missed this revisit, really impressive piece of work from a band more known for party hard rock anthems going a bit deeper.

5: Queensryche: Queensryche

The first “Tate-less” release from Ryche and they delivered a solid album that merges elements of their early days with Empire era period sounding stuff as well. To lose such a key member and voice like Tate and still make an album this strong is pretty amazing. By the way, I also thought Tate’s Frequency Unknown was solid, but to me it was more of a Tate and friends record while this album retained more of a classic Queensryche band vibe featuring 3/5 of the original members.

5.5: Black Sabbath: 13

Their 3/4 reunion record was way better than anyone thought it would be. Led by the all time riff master Tony Iommi (NEVER ending supply of amazing riffs!). The founding fathers of metal able to come up with an album that channels their history but still sounds fresh and most important like Black Sabbath!

6: Scorpion Child

New band from Austin Texas that sounds like they could have come from the 70’s. Killer guitar riff based hard rock that at times reminds me of Fastway. “Liquor” my favorite track on it. Promising new band and hope to see them live.

7: Stryper: No More Hell To Pay

Michael Sweet wrote the bulk of the album and produced it as well. The best new music from this band in a while with great guitar sounds and those incredible lead and harmony vocals all over the place. Regardless of your religious beliefs, if you believe in well played hard rock with amazing vocals listen and enjoy.

8: Motorhead: Aftershock

With recent health scares surrounding Lemmy and various ailments catching up to the iconic front man you would expect maybe a tired sounding album after all these years? To the contrary it’s the best album from the band in several years. Motorhead is always going to sound like Motorhead, but by their standards there is a bit more variety here which makes it stand out a bit more.

9: Michael Monroe: Horns & Halos

His album last year Sensory Overdrive was also a top 10 for me. This album isn’t quite as good as that one but it’s close. The former leader of Hanoi Rocks is on a roll. Only hope the American audience takes notice. “The Ballad Of The Lower E Side” my favorite track. Killer snotty hard rock!

10: Megadeth: Supercollider

Many thought this was Risk all over again when the title track was released as a single, but that wasn’t a sign of the direction of the rest of the album (plus I like the song!). Lot’s of classic Megadeth metal on this and a great cover of Thin Lizzy’s Cold Sweat to end the album. Can’t argue with that!

Other stuff to check out that I liked:

Anthrax: Anthems (covers EP otherwise would have been in the top 10 easily. But they always do great covers.

Skid Row: United World Rebellion (again only an EP, but direction wise back to where Skids should be.

Avenged Sevenfold: Hail To The King

More groove and song oriented than other stuff I heard from them.

Tom Keifer: The Way Life Goes

Lot’s of directions but great to finally have new music from the leader of Cinderella.

Saxon: Sacrifice

One of British metal’s best but still slightly under the radar bands.

Kill Devil Hill: Revolution Rise

Album 2 and a great continuation of what they started on debut.

Hear all of the above and many more on my Year In Review radio special debuting on Q104.3 NYC 11P ET 12/27/13.

12/14: JAKE E LEE, KISSMAS 2013, BOB DAISLEY, SIGNED BOOKS, MORE.

Lot’s of stuff to update so here we go:

* TONIGHT’S SCHEDULED TMS CHRISTMAS BASH AT DINGBATZ IN NJ HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO THE SNOW STORM. THE RESCHEDULED DATE IS 12/28, SEE YOU THEN.

*Back from LA where I hosted the first ever show by Jake E Lee’s new band Red Dragon Cartel at The Whiskey. If you follow on Twitter you saw photos and the set list which featured Ozzy, Badlands and new stuff. There has been a great deal of criticism about elements of this show, and I agree there is work to be done. But it’s important to remember this was the first ever show in this bands history. So safe to say they are still figuring some stuff out. It was the first time Jake did a proper gig in 20 years and he was great. Not making apologies here, I always call it as I see it, and some stuff needs to be worked on for sure, but it was one gig, let’s see where it goes. The good news is Jake is finally back, playing great, and also taking some ownership of the Ozzy stuff he co-wrote and was such a huge part of. The new album is out 1/28 and is also killer. I’m sure the issues live will be worked out as the band gels for sure. If you missed my interview with Jake E Lee last week on my SiriusXM show it is now posted On Demand on the app. Just search my name under the Hair Nation channel.

*Speaking of Ozzy, I finally read Bob Daisley’s book. For those that don’t know Bob he was in Rainbow, Gary Moore and many many more great bands. But he is also the guy that played bass and wrote the lyrics and some music on pretty much the first 5 Ozzy albums, mostly uncredited. Bob played a HUGE role in Ozzy’s solo success with very little acknowledgement. His new book For Facts Sake is an interesting read for sure. I will have Bob on my show live from Australia this Monday at 9P ET on SiriusXM 39 to discuss all this and more. Don’t miss it! Also in this Monday’s final live show of 2013 will be an in studio visit from comic Jim Breuer and Andy Curran of Coney Hatch. A busy TRUNKNation this Monday to wrap up 2013 live shows! 6-10P ET SiriusXM 39.

*Great response to the first airing of the Priest/Maiden/Rush special last night on Q104.3. Remember this show replays next weekend on all affiliates and webstream outlets and On Demand on this site for AA members. I’m area the Q104.3 stream cuts off at times and have asked the station to explore.

*Since 1990 I have been doing an annual all Kiss show called The Original Merry KISSmas Special. Regardless of the misinformation and hyper sensitivity of some, I am and always will be a Kiss fan and remain one of the few that play the bands music beyond a couple songs for the last 30 years. That will continue with this years special that happens for the Q104.3 audience this Friday night 11P-2A. The Hall will officially announce who gets in this Tuesday AM and many indicators point to Kiss making it FINALLY! So if that indeed happens this Friday’s Kissmas show will truly be a great celebration! I also plan on doing this show live so who knows what will happen during it? Now with Rush and Alice in, and if Kiss actually makes it, I may be able to relax a little haha. But then there are still SO many we must keep fighting for! Stand by for more but either way KISSmas this year is this Friday in NYC on my show on Q104.3. All eras as always represented.

*Getting many orders for signed books for VOL 1 and 2. If orders arrive by end of next week should make it in time for Christmas delivery, doing my best to sign and ship Priority ASAP. Order under Books tab on the site. Unsigned copies anywhere books are sold. Also don’t forget the sale on my merch all this month on the site for gifts or even AA site membership which includes a signed photo and On Demand listening of the FM show and more.

*TMS starts shooting in NYC 1/14 and debuts 1/18 with new shows. Artists, ticket info and more TBA soon.

Have a great weekend, more soon.

12/10: JAKE E LEE, DINGBATZ PARTY, PRIEST/MAIDEN/RUSH SPECIAL

Had a great live show last night on SiriusXM with a last minute call in from Jake E Lee. You can read some of the highlights in the music news section now. Got more in depth than I thought we would have time for and talked Ozzy, Badlands, and of course the new band and album Red Dragon Cartel. Jake was very candid about many things and did confirm he was “uninvited” from going to see Sabbath simply for saying he’d like CREDIT (not money, credit) for writing Bark At The Moon. Simply amazing and now you know why Ozzy has never been on TMS I guess! The new album is out Jan 28th and he sounded in great spirits and ready for a relaunch that happens officially this Thursday at The Whiskey in LA. I’m honored to be hosting this first live show from RDC and appreciate the exclusive interview which covered lot’s of things in 40 minutes or so. I’ll have him back for more when the album is closer to release. Also debuted another new track from the album with Paul DiAnno on vocals called “Wasted”. See you Thursday night in LA if you are making the show! Welcome back Jake!

This Friday’s Q104.3 show is the first of the year end specials with each of the shows 3 hours dedicated to 3 of the most requested yet underplayed bands in my radio shows history. Hour 1 features Judas Priest, Hour 2 Iron Maiden, Hour 3 Rush. First time I ever did one like this, hope you enjoy it. I am aware the iHeartradio app and stream has been cutting off on Q104.3. I have asked the station to correct this problem if possible. They are looking into it. Remember you can also hear the Q show on all the affiliates and their streams the following weekend. Or become an AA Member of this site and get shows On Demand after they debut on all stations! Cheap and easy to be a member.

This Saturday the annual TMS Christmas bash at Dingbatz in Clifton NJ. I’ll be selling and signing my books at Dingos across the street before the party (no admission at book signing!) starting around 7:30. Party at Dingbatz around 9. Come hang with me, Don and Jim this Saturday. I’ll also have free Schenker tix to give away for Starland!

12/9: BACK FROM COSTA RICA, LIVE TRUNKNATION TONIGHT, MORE

Made it back from Costa Rica yesterday. Had to leave a day earlier than I thought I would but everything worked out okay. HUGE thanks to the Costa Rican metal fans! AMAZING support for me and TMS there. The show is seen on regular VH1 and there are promos running all the time. So weird to see TMS in the middle of all the pop and pop culture programs on the regular channel, but it is super popular! I was not in the beach areas, just in San Jose as it was a work trip, but it was a cool experience to meet so many fans and also many bands that played that were from the area as well as bands a bit outside of what I do, but still all very cool. More when I have time.

Since I was made it back a bit early I will do a LIVE show TONIGHT on SiriusXM channel 39 6-10P ET on TRUNKnation!

Leave for LA Wed, host Jake E Lee Red Dragon Cartel at The Whiskey Thursday. TMS party and my book signing at Dingos and Dingbatz this Saturday! My free signing at Dingos will run from around 7:30-9 before the party at Dingbatz. Come grab a signed book, no admission and free tickets to Michael Schenker at Starland while supplies last!

More soon.

12/3: COSTA RICA BOUND, UPDATE ON ALL KINDS OF STUFF, YEAR END SPECIALS, MORE, READ!

Headed to San Jose Costa Rica for the first time ever tomorrow. I’ll be hosting a metal festival there this weekend that includes Overkill, Dio Disciples and many many more over three days. This is the second time this year I have been able to get outside the USA and meet TMS fans in other parts of the world. Brazil was a blast in October and look forward to meeting the fans of Costa Rica this weekend!

Thanks to all who came out to my signing with Mike Portnoy this past Saturday in Hellertown PA. Great crowd and we stayed an extra hour to give everyone time. To those who waited outside in cold temps we do appreciate it and thank you for coming! Next signing is before the TMS Christmas party at Dingos Den in Clifton NJ 12/14 7:30-9P. NO admission for the book signing. The TMS party starts at 9 across the street at Dingbatz after the book signing. Hope to announce more signings soon, just time and schedule. In the meantime you can get both of my books physical or digital anywhere books are sold. If you want a signed copy of VOL 2 follow the directions on the site to order books and just specify with the order what volumes you would like and I’ll get them out before Christmas.

I’ll be in LA to host the first live show from Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel 12/12 at The Whiskey.

Thanks to Wall Street Rocks for having me host their event last night to benefit various military charities. Was an honor. Good to see Mark McGrath and have my good friend Mike Piazza out to hang as well.

AA Members of this site now get the last 3 weeks of radio shows to listen to On Demand. Membership makes a great affordable holiday gift. And don’t forget all the items in my online store are on sale now through the end of the year!

Here are the annual year end radio specials for 2013. The days listed are for the first airing on Q104.3 NYC. As usual all shows then air on the affiliates at the dates and times posted for those stations on the site. Q104.3 show is Friday’s 11P-2A ET and can be streamed free at www.q1043.com or with the free iheartradio app:

12/13: Priest/Maiden/Rush show! First time ever for this one. An hour of each band in all 3 hours of the show. 3 of the most loved but underplayed bands all in one special.

12/20: The Original Merry KISSmas special. After doing this show for well over 20 years and screaming about Kiss not being in the R&R Hall, let’s hope this is the LAST time I am doing it that they aren’t! You know the drill, the one time a year I do nothing but a full show of Kiss, all eras! As I have ALWAYS said I will always be a Kiss fan regardless of my OPINION on certain things. As usual I am proud to do this yearly show for over two decades now celebrating what I have always loved most about the band and what is rarely played outside of a couple songs on radio, the music.

12/27: The Year In Review. Always do this one, very important to spotlight the new music I dealt with on the show from 2013. As a big supporter of new music as well this is a good chance to rediscover stuff you may have missed.

SiriusXM show recorded this Monday and next due to travel.

I’ll update here again when I have time. Follow on Twitter @EddieTrunk and Facebook/eddietrunk for more from Costa Rica and more.

TMS ticket links posted for new shows here when I get it from VH1. New shows start taping from NYC 1/14 and airing 1/18!

Just a quick note to say Happy Thanksgiving to all here in the US tomorrow. Hope you all have a great day with friends and family. I am truly thankful for what I do and you guys are a HUGE part of that by supporting it. So if you read, watch, listen, whatever, thanks, and have a great day!

I will be live Friday night on Q104.3 11P-2A ET. Listen to the live stream at www.q1043.com or use the free iheartradio app. Phil Collen calls in and maybe some other surprises. Plus more new Jake E Lee music and tons of tickets to see Michael Schenker in the NYC/NJ area. I’ll also announce the year end FM radio show specials soon.

SiriusXM show recorded next 2 weeks. This Monday I’m hosting a Wounded Warriors benefit at Irving Plaza in NYC, next Monday I’ll be coming back from my first ever trip to Costa Rica to host a metal festival with Overkill and many more. I’ll also be in LA 12/12 to host the first ever live show with Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel at The Whiskey!

Was in Maryland yesterday to shoot an interview with Lamb Of God and director Don Argott. The band has an amazing doc coming out about the band and the experience with Randy being arrested. Honored the guys picked me to do this important interview in their history. It will be a bonus on the DVD and also seen in the theatrical releases as well.

Don’t forget to join me and Mike Portnoy for a signing this Saturday 4-6P at Gr8Soundz Music in Hellertown PA. I’ll have copies of my books for sale just in time for the holidays. Also the annual TMS Christmas hang at Dingbatz in Clifton NJ is on for 12/14. I’ll be doing a book signing starting at 7:30 across the street at Dingos Den until around 9P before going in for the party. NO admission for the book signing at Dingos!

When I have guests and ticket info for next run of TMS I will post here.
