QUESTION OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JUDAS PRIEST ALBUM?

Hands downs:

  1. I also really like Sad Wings and Sin After Sin. Simon Phillips is great on that album. Firepower was a really great album 40 years in their career. Close to as good as Painkiller.

    1. Agreed. Tasker,

Sad Wings is phenomenal, but track for track, in my humble opinion, Screaming is all killer, no filler.

    2. Hahaha, I like it. Screaming is great and starts out super high energy. Kinda like how Pantera’s Cowboys from hell just comes out punching.

  2. DANA! I just got caught up listening to Eddie’s rock hall snubs episode. We should put that up as a question of the week! I wasn’t able to call in, and there were a lot of great bands mentioned, but there were two I didn’t hear anyone mention. How in the hell is Ted Nugent not in the rock hall, and I firmly believe that Triumph should be in as well. Of course, we all know that the folks in charge of the rock hall are mostly a bunch of bozos. Thanks for managing the site Dana and I truly hope you’re feeling better these days.

    1. Hi Rich,

Thank you for your kinds words.

As requested, I will post it now. But, quite frankly, this topic has been both a constant exercise in frustration, annoyance and futility. It is elitism that will never change, so why do we keep giving it any attention, it deserves to be forgotten about like a fart in the wind.

    2. I completely understand your point of view, and yes it is mostly an exercise in frustration. Has the backlash against the powers that be in the rock hall had any effect at all? Hard to say. I think there has been some incremental improvement to the manner in which they treat the bands we hold most dear. I think one can make the argument that the inclusion of fan voting to the process was an effort to stave off some of the criticism directed at the cabal that was selecting inductees. But, there are still miles to go when it comes to the appropriate recognition of so many great artists. I think that Eddie did a great job of making the argument that there are artists from multiple sub-genres of rock music (and even other genres such as country), and artists across several generations, that have been unfairly ignored. All that being said, I give zero weight to who is or isn’t inducted into the rock hall. I visited it in 2003 when I happened to be working in Cleveland, and it was painfully apparent that the folks selecting inductees had some serious biases against certain types of music. That hasn’t changed much. But I agree with Eddie that it can be a fun exercise to look at who’s been snubbed, and it goes way beyond just hard rock bands. Thanks for posting the question. If nothing else it gives those who couldn’t get onto Eddie’s podcast a forum to put their ideas out there. Eddie will always have my undying gratitude for what he does to support rock artists and those that follow them. He’s two years older than me and we’d have been great friends discussing bands that practically nobody else knew existed. The other day I heard him mention that he’s surprised Icon wasn’t a bigger band back in the 80s, which made me laugh because I think Icon is a great band. You know, me and the other 4 people in Oklahoma that bought their debut album when it came out. A huge thanks to you as well Dana since I know it’s probably a fair amount of work to keep the site up for all the aging fans of 80s and 90s music that still love to listen, read and talk about it. Music is in my DNA and I can’t live without playing and listening to it!

  3. Now that I’ve thought about it, maybe a better topic is which artists did you absolutely love but never reached any kind of commercial success? And there are a BUNCH of those that I bet the community on this website would definitely recognize. For example, I am a huge fan of a couple of Canadian bands that are certainly known in Canada, but never made it out of obscurity in the US: Coney Hatch and the Headpins. Just an idea!

    1. Yes we can do that question as well, but I will rephrase it. I will put it down now, so my old aging behind doesn’t forget.

  4. Funny where’s all the “Turbo” votes, lol…Parental Guidance maybe the JP low of lows?

But picking #1 is a tough call for me b/w “Screaming 4 Vengeance” & “Defenders”. When picking “best” album it’s really about the deep cuts, which album has more prolonged excellence & I think if I have to pick one then Defenders of the Faith gets the nod, barely, the Defenders deep cuts beat Screaming’s by a hair…
