I happen to love all of the military songs representing all the branches of our services, but for hard rock/metal I appreciate Metallica‘s For Whom The Bell Tolls, Def Leppard‘s Die Hard The Hunter and Iron Maiden‘s Ace’s High.

The “Ride of the Valkyries” refers to the beginning of act 3 of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas constituting Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. During the last century, this was something I heard regularly as a military aviator.

Silas,
If you are American, which I assume you are based on those you are remembering, I cannot thank you enough for your service, and because I had them in my family, my respect and love for our vets, is never ending.
However, Wagner was a raging anti-Semite, with his music being the soundtrack for Nazism. Since, he was worshipped by Hitler, I find anything connected to, or written by him, absolutely abhorrent.
Depending on the context, if this was indeed being played by our military, sorry to write this, but I find that a bit demoralizing.
In my humble opinion, it is also a complete insult to all the WWII vets (such as my great uncle who was a medic under Patton and his division helped to liberate Bergen Belsen), who lost their lives, and spilled their blood, fighting against the barbaric Nazis.
Disposable Heroes by Metallica.
1) “War Machine” Bryan Adams version (great fresh version of already killer class song by KISS)
2) “Rock Soldiers” by Ace Frehley (moral” winner on this category. Those Marching drums in start already nails this in to perfection)
3) “1916” by Motörhead (beatiful and sad, still has some strange feelin’ hope included + almost hymn-like)
4) “Frontlines” by Soulfly (context suitable by perfect pack of aggression and beatiful acoustic end fading)
I am surprised no one mentioned Iron Maiden, The Trooper, and I love that image. The song is pretty good too.
Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” is a favorite
Would “One” by Metallica count??
