Metallica frontman James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo , say they can relate to fans who say Metallica’s music has made a deep connection with them.
When asked Boise radio station 100.3 The X Rocks’ host Big J, what it was like when a fan approach(es) them to say that their music had saved their life.
Hetfield responded, “I know what they mean, because it saved my life. So, yeah, join the club.”
Guitarist Hammett then puts up his hand and says, “Yeah, me too.”
Hetfield continues, “That is the ultimate connection – something I’ve felt: Some fear, some anxiety, whatever it may be. My viewpoint of the world is totally off kilter, it’s defective, and then when someone comes up to you and says, ‘What you’ve written down or what you’ve created has helped me’ that’s more of a connection.
You haven’t spoken any words – you’ve just felt what that person is feeling, even though it might be different. Everyone loves it when someone tells their story. Someone’s saying, ‘That guy is singing to me’ or ‘That song is about me.’”
Trujillo says that music is the “ultimate conduit” and adds “With music, and the magic of music, you’re making people happy.
“I used to run in the mountains to Metallica music back on the Ride The Lightning album, so there’s always a place for it, and it’s almost always positive for most people. Music is like magic in my mind, it’s really special.”

I agree with other posters who say that, while music never saved my life, I definitely would be lost without it. Music is one of the things that makes life worth living! I have some weird musical tastes. While I love hard rock and heavy metal music, I also am a total fan of Neil Diamond! I also love a lot of Classical music, especially piano concertos. And, around this time of year, I love to listen to choral music. What I’m trying to say is that, for me, music adds color to my life. And different moods and seasons require different colors. I’m going to see Tran Siberian Orchestra this Friday, and I can’t wait!
Neil is the man…..everyone get up and sing…..”Sweet Caroline…bah bah bah bah!!!!!”
Well said, Keith G. TSO, man what a great show!
Music is amazing! There are all varieties of music in the world, yet all this music is created using the same twelve musical notes. And even though the same twelve notes are used, different sounding music and songs are created by these talented artists. IMO, mind blowing when I think about it…..
Music can be inspiring, music can be a motivator, music can recall memories, music allows us to reflect about things in our life, etc….
