During an appearance on the latest episode of Lisa Guerrero Unleashed, the podcast hosted by award-winning investigative journalist, keynote speaker, actor and producer Lisa Guerrero, KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons was asked for his take on artificial intelligence (A.I.) in music.
The bassist stated (as per blabbermouth.net), “The future is here. It’s not just in music. There was a [Al] Pacino movie years ago, about 10 or 15 years ago, about a… I wish I could remember the title, and I’m a big movie buff. In fact, I’ve produced a few. It was about a manager who can’t get a break, and he launches this new actress whose name is so-and-so, and it’s a big hit movie, but he can’t make her available for interviews because it’s an A.I. … She exists only in the movies. People think she’s a real person. And by the way, recently, like last month, there was a Number One country song by an artist who never existed and still doesn’t. And there are huge K-pop music acts who exist only in the A.I. world, and they have millions of fans out there. And you can liaise with modern A.I., ask questions, and they respond, and so on and so forth. The line between reality and kind of the A.I. world is diminishing. And by the way, I’ve got a motion picture I’m developing now, called Icarus, which is a semi-sci-fi kind of thing. Other than the lead actor, it’s all gonna be A.I.”
After Guerrero expressed concern for actors being able find work, as well as for writers and artists who may no longer find it as easy to collaborate on new projects because of A.I., Simmons replied. “I don’t know the answer to that, but you raise an important issue, which is … I’m not sure what the answer is. We’re all gonna have to find out. But to avoid it, you’re gonna be left behind…”
“…and I don’t know what the answer is, but you will not be able to hold the A.I. wall back,” Simmons added. “[Late actor] Val Kilmer, who I knew when he was alive — actually, after me, I think he lived with Cher. At any rate, a great guy who sadly passed away from cancer. Well, there’s a new motion picture coming out. The estate has allowed Val‘s image to be in it. He’s one of the stars of a new movie, but he’s been gone a long time. This is gonna be happening more and more.”

All I have to say is F-CK A.I.! I’m just so sick and tired of hearing about, enough already! How lazy and unmotivated is the world becoming? Having to rely on artificial intelligence, not me, never! I prefer to rely on my own intelligence! Thank you!
Hi Doug,
I completely agree with your feelings regarding A.I., there is something highly dystopian about it. But, as much of a luddite that I am, I have to also concur with Simmons, as it seems there is no escaping it. Also, what is worse is that we do not want nefarious entities, getting the upper hand in developing it, then we really are in deep doody.
You can try and resist all you want, but at a certain point, it will seep into your everyday life. My hunch is that will most likely start in the food industry. Eventually, like in Asia, we may see Robots, or robotic arms cooking the food at fast food places, chain restaurants, etc. Eventually, they may even have robots at the drive thru counters taking orders, etc. My fiancee has already had to deal with an A.I. customer service rep over the phone (Sadly, he said it was far more efficient than most human reps). If I am not mistaken, I think I read many Airlines now have A.I. “operators” taking plane reservations over the phone.
I also know, A.I. has been a part of the medical field, for quite sometime. From robot “doctors” making rounds at hospitals, to robots being incorporated in surgeries and even aiding doctors in making clinical diagnoses.
While I know A.I., is in a different league, at the time people said the same things about the industrial revolution, traveling into space, etc. Sadly, we cannot stop progress, even if it is sometimes to our detriment, and I believe parts of A.I. will be. Nevermind, that we have to worry about it going rouge, I believe it will eventually eliminate 90% of the work force. Then, how will people survive?
The only jobs, that I think will have some security for awhile will be plumbers, electricians and roofers. I don’t even think welding will be safe, as robots will be more than capable of preforming that task.
Completely agree. I think a lot of A.I. is evil. And it has evil intentions in the long run. Militaries around the world will eventually all become robots. Humans will not be able to stop them. Zakk Wylde said it right, “Doomsday Jesus we need you now!”
We’re all f–ked, say goodbye to the human race, no more human touch, say goodbye to mankind, humankind, and to any kind of human interaction at all! Hopefully I’ll be able to work for another 5 years until I can retire before I get replaced by a f–king robot!
I hope so, for your sake, too.
It could be worse, you could have went on to get a higher degree, thinking it would pay off (master’s, doctorate, medical degree, law degree), only to find you have been replaced by A.I. and you owe tons in student debt.
Thank God, most of us are not young. Good luck to the youth.
I bet a lot of this acrimony towards Ace and Peter, and particularly Ace, has to do with how great they sounded in rehearsal v. when they would do the gigs and sometimes those guys would let things slide…
…Ace played some his best s–t in rehearsals….we haven’t heard that….Paul and Gene know things we don’t..
Will be interesting – software companies are trying to monetize it by the how organizations use the software. So far, a number of large number of organizations are not signing off on this.
I need to make a confession to all of you…I’m actually an A.I. agent.
(Bet that explains a lot!)
I think you meant, “Bot that explains a lot?” 😉
