FRONTIERS MUSIC SRL IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE SIGNING OF BLUE ÖYSTER CULT

For over four decades, Blue Oyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Indeed, the Long Island, NY-‐based band is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work. Blue Öyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it’s one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Now they have partnered up with Frontiers Music Srl to continue their amazing journey.

“We are delighted to be able to bring back the iconic Blue Öyster Cult with the release of a wealth of musical material that will certainly please all the fans. Hard Rock music would not be what is now without BÖC and Frontiers is their natural “home”. We look forward to a long and fruitful cooperation!” – Serafino Perugino, Frontiers Records President.

“It’s been a long time since BÖC’s last studio album. Our biggest question from fans is ‘when are we going to do some new music?’ So we are ready to take this journey again. Recording with Danny, Richie and Jules should be a great experience as we’ve been touring together for years and Buck and I are looking forward to including them in the creative and recording process, say Eric Bloom.

“The current band is GREAT and has never been recorded other than the live concerts, so we feel now is the time for new songs to be written and recorded. About half of the songs for the new record exist and the rest will be finished during the process,” adds Buck Dharma.

A new studio album is expected to be released from the band in 2020. Fans can also expect to see remastered reissues (some with updated artwork) of four classic BÖC releases including:

1. Cult Classic (originally released in 1994)
2. Heaven Forbid (originally released in 1998) [Not available for North / South America]
3. Curse of the Hidden Mirror originally released in 2001) [Not available for North / South America]
4. A Long Day’s Night (Live CD/DVD and Blu Ray) originally released in 2002 – Blu Ray version to be released for the first time)

Additionally, in 2020 the band will present five new live releases which include:

1. Live show from the iHeart Radio Theater 2012 (40th Anniversary).
2. Live show from Hard Rock Casino Cleveland 2014
3. Live show from Rock of Ages Festival in Germany 2016
4. 40th Anniversary of Agents of Fortune shot in L.A. in April 2017 [ Agents of Fortune album played front to back]
5. BӦC 45th Anniversary show Live in London June 17th 2017) [includes BÖC first album played in its entirety back to back]

BÖC is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as Metallica, and BÖC was listed in VH1’s countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.

  1. BOC, one of my favorites. Actually saw them live a couple months ago.
Thinking about it, a lot of their songs written way back when are still relevant today. I guess this is true for other artists as well.
One of their songs, “Veteran of the Physic Wars” was used in the animated film Heavy Metal and they were supposed to do a whole soundtrack album for that movie but it didn’t pan out although some of those songs did wind up on the Fire of Unknown Origin album. Of course “Don’t Fear The Reaper” was used in the original Halloween and the 90’s horror/comedy flick The Frighteners.
Seems to me that Tobias Forge and Ghost drew some influence from them.

    1. One of my faves too, Rob. And my 2nd favorite band from NY, right behind KISS! Everybody knows “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” “Godzilla,” “Burnin’ For You,” but “The Marshall Plan” is probably my favorite song from BOC.

    2. Heavy Metal, wow, what a cool flick!
I was a teenager working as an usher in a movie theater when that came out, so I’ve seen it dozens of times.
Never heard that BOC was supposed to do the whole soundtrack. I’m glad that didn’t pan out.
What a great soundtrack it turned out to be: Hagar, Felder, Sabbath, Devo, Cheap trick, and many others.

    3. Hey Doug,
Glad to hear that. The Marshall Plan is a good track as is that whole Cultosaurus album.
Another band with New York origins that comes to mind for me is Type O Negative as they were definitely in the hard rock/ metal sphere and horror/ sci-fi themes permeate their songs.

    4. I think “Heavy Metal” was the coolest bad flick ever.

No film comes close to having a better soundtrack. But my heart sank when it got an “X”-rating where I lived. And then because of licencing problems, it never came out on home video!

I finally got to see it around 1989, when we had shore leave and it was playing at a midnite showing in some distant suburb. I actually managed to persuade my fellow sailors to go to out. Each segment of the film was a letdown, and the guys would look at me, saying “you picked this piece of crap”, and I assured them the next one would be better.

The place was empty except us and some chicks sitting behind us. We thought we had a chance, but when the nude scenes came on, the girls complained how pointless the nudity was and the testosterone fizzled.

Double letdown, but the music lives on!

    5. Right on, Rob! And I love how they mixed in that little snippet from “Smoke On The Water” in “The Marshall Plan!” And of course, Don Kirshner! 😉

  2. Kudos to Frontiers Music!
I’m so glad there’s a label out there still willing to manufacture and release CDs & DVDs from our older and classic artists.
Yes, I need the physical albums & video. And yes, I’m the guy who buys it the week it comes out.
So tired of artists complaining about the music “industry”. “Oh, CDs don’t sell so why make an album”. Or they cop out and only release a digital or EP version. Do it for the love of the music and your creative expression. Put the music out there and let the fans have a choice.
So, thank you Frontiers, I’ll continue to support your artists!

    1. Agree, Mikey, GREAT soundtrack! But the movie? I’m not a fan of anime, so I passed on the film, but I love the soundtrack!

  3. This is great news! I’m finally going to see them this summer. I doubt they’ll be playing “Take Me Away” – one of the best jam songs ever – but maybe the headlining spot they have will give them a bit more flexibility.

They’re definitely a vinyl band. I recently bought reissues of the first five albums and found that the best way to take it all in is to sit in front of your speakers like the guy in that Memorex advertisement. Anyone remember that one? The Crue and Van Halen are great for in the car with the top down, but BOC is all about having the lights down low and having an ambiance.

I think the hard rock world got really crowded in the early 80s, and BOC couldn’t really find their place in it. If the Heavy Metal film had actually been good, BOC could have benefited tremendously from that combination of music, sex and science fiction.

That being said, the last thing they really made their mark on in the 80s was Buck Dharma’s incredible solo on Dio’s “Stars” project.
