QUESTION OF THE WEEK: DO YOU ENJOY INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND SEEING INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCES OR DO YOU PREFER MUSIC ACCOMPANIED BY VOCALS?

While I admire instrumental musical excellence, such as Eric Johnson, I much prefer music with vocals, so I can sing along.

  1. There are some great instrumentals out there. Black Star by Yngwie, The Call of Ktulu by Metallica (the live S&M version is really cool) Genghis Kahn by
Maiden to name a few. But nothing that would kill a setlist if it’s not played live.

Apologies again for posting this at an unrelated topic, but I did see Lynch Mob last week. The setting was perfect. About 200 people in a small club and I literally was 5 feet from the stage!! I paid the price at the end of the show with my back LOL but it was worth every ache and pain!!! To See George Lynch THAT CLOSE was nothing short of phenomenal!!! Absolutely one of my top concerts ever!!! The setting is what made it. Just a band, a stage and a few lights. Really focused on the music!! The setlist was a nice mix of Dokken tunes and a heavy focus on the first album. Wish I would have heard more off the second album. But they dusted off Cold Is The Heart and was totally blown away with the live version of this tune!! Every solo was meticilous and extended beyond the original recording. At 71 years old he still has it!! Look on Youtube – Lynch Mob Mercury Music Lounge – Every clip shown in close range, I was literally right there, and I have a guitar pick to prove it 🙂 Best 40 bucks (including a SMALL fee that was not gouging my wallet by any means!!) i’ve spent in a very long time!!

  2. Hi Dana, I’d like to suggest a “Question Of the Week”……..What are your favorite “live” albums? Perhaps if you are in need of a question, you may consider this one…

    1. Hi Rattle,

      Thank you.

I think that was semi tied into “Your Favorite Album Of All Time?” because quite a few posters listed live albums as their “all time favorite.” However, I propose it this Monday, anyway.

  3. I don’t mind if an album has an Instrumental track on it, but get bored if the whole album is instrumental. Which is kinda funny because I rarely pay attention to the lyrics lol

  4. I love instrumental music and performances.

As far as rock music, I love Joe Satriani and Steve Vai in both live and studio settings. Some of my favourtie RUSH songs are the instrumentals like YYZ, Cygnus X-1, Where’s My thing to name a few. I really enjoy and am moved by great musicianship that doesn’t need vocals. Dream Theater & Porcupine Tree have some epic instrumentals. Metallica’s Call of Ktulu, Orion, Suicide & Redemption and To Live is To Die can’t go unmentioned in my Metal mind. So many great instrumental songs out there.

Symphonic & orchestral music I really like as well. Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Beethoven I’ve listened to since I was a child and still do in my 50’s. I don’t expect that to change.
