Why the hell don’t he do any solo material?? At least “Yankee Rose!”
I might be wrong but I think this was his attempt at a tribute to Eddie and the music they made together as VAN HALEN
Robert,
I was thinking along the same lines.
Perhaps, Roth noticed that Sammy Hagar was having monetary success, with his Van Halen inspired, Best Of All Worlds tour, and decided to do his own version?
I saw that tour, and other than Panama (which was sung by Hagar) and Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love (which was sung by Michael Anthony), it was all Van Hagar material, which a smattering of Chickenfoot, Montrose, solo Hagar and Satriani material.
Maybe, Roth saw there was an opportunity, and desire, for fans to hear (the original) Van Halen material? Certainly interesting, considering of Roth’s false starts, and his Las Vegas residency ending early. Let’s see how his tour pans out? Maybe, I would go..?
I was thinking the same thing, will Roth really be able to complete this tour? I wish he was coming closer to Virginia Beach than Bristol, that’s over 400 miles away!
I just watched his m3 show on YouTube, I thought it would be typical roth , but he sounded pretty damn good! And the band was tight ! And whoever was on guitar was amazing ! He was delivering an almost spot on guitar performance on every song , if they come near me I’m going to see this show !
Certainly a good playlist, and apparently a very good band. You got to be pretty good on guitar to join this band, because the expectations are very high, and those songs mean a lot to people. That first album is magic.
Dave is something else. I thought what I saw at M3 was hysterical! The back up singers and their poses…..lmao. There’s only one diamond Dave!
Yeah , I agree the back up singers were fun to watch ! I’ve been pretty critical of dave on this site, but he put in some work on his vocals still not the best singer but he sounded much much better , and even though the band were on a click it was well rehearsed and still somewhat loose – like I said I would see roth but he is not coming near enough to me ….
Although Roth’s live performances are vocally challenging, I’d much rather go see Roth, rather than Sammy Hagar, perform Van Halen material. For me, Roth just has that “it” factor and I MUCH more prefer his Van Halen era over Hagar’s era.
No question, I completely agree, there is no comparison between Van Halen and Van Hagar.
But, in Hagar‘s defense, as I wrote before, the only Roth era song he sang, was Panama, with Anthony, singing, Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love. The rest of the material was Van Hagar.
I saw Van Halen on their inital “reunion” tour with Roth. So, I am good, either way.
I saw Roth and Hagar when they toured together. I caught them on a night that Roth was the headliner. DLR totally blew Sammy off the stage. Sammy was running around onstage barefoot in some ugly yellow gear. There should be a golden rule in rock n roll: NO BARE FEET ON STAGE (INCLUDING DRUMMERS)!
That’s because Hagar cares more about the music than the image, whereas Roth had always cared cared more about the image/fashion, even EVH said that years ago.
Roth, musically, is quite talented. He co-wrote GREAT melodies, and he managed, no matter how non sensical, to write lyrics over some hard verses, no easy task.
But yes, Roth is definitely more of a showman, and his youth, in my humble opinion, he was super SEXY. Hagar might have great teeth, but let’s be real, he was never sexy.
Well neither one has ever appealed to me as far as that goes! Lol! But I agree, Roth is talented musically, as is Hagar, and both are very entertaining in their own unique way, but in my opinion when it comes to the music, that comes first to Hagar, not the image.
I agree, talent is far more important, but how many “musicians” became famous because of their appearance?
Dana, I agree that David Lee Roth is a better showman. Also, he used his sex appeal to lure women as Van Halen fans, while Eddie’s guitar playing lured the men. So, Van Halen had “the best of both worlds” to attract fans. Hagar is indeed the better musician, but a band’s rise to fame is a lot more than just musicianship. Personally, I’d much rather listen to anything Roth sings rather than Hagar….there’s just this Roth swagger than makes the music stand out and rock harder. And for me, the first four Van Halen albums are my “fave first four” of any hard rock/metal band.
Funny, George and Ryan from Lost In Vegas say that about Roth, aw well. They say he has “swagger,” which is innate, and cannot be taught.
I have to give, the original Van Halen, tons of credit. Their template, was used by so many 80s bands, that followed them (of course, with very few living up to Van Halen’s guitar prowess): Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Europe, Bullet Boys, etc.
