ADRENALINE MOB PAYS TRIBUTE TO A.J.PERO, VIDEO POSTED ONLINE, TWISTED SISTER GUITARIST JAY JAY FRENCH DISCUSSES FUTURE OF THE BAND

adreniline mob:jjfrench 640 On March 21st, Adrenaline Mob played a tribute to Twisted Sister and Adrenaline Mob drummer, A.J.Pero at the Starland Ballroom in New Jersey.

Jay Jay from Twisted Sister finished night with his favorite joke that A.J. told him and then performed the Sister classic, You Can’t Stop Rock N’ Roll.

Watch a video below from the show. AJ will be missed but not forgotten.

In related news, Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French called into Eddie’s Sirius/XM, Eddie Trunk Live, show yesterday (March 23rd) discussing Pero’s health and the future of Twisted Sister.

He said of Pero’s health, “You know, he would be in the dressing room… Drummers are like… They’re the most… ‘Oh, my arm. My shoulder.’ That kind of a thing,” French said. “Put the Bengay on and take the aspirin. But that’s stuff that you just figured were like battle scars — that kind of a thing. I didn’t know the extent… that he had heart problems; he never confided in me. In fact, here’s the ironic thing… On Thursday [March 19], I had to call him, because I had to bring him up to date on what was going with the band, ’cause so much stuff is happening. We’ve got a documentary coming out this year on the beginning of the band [and our] history; we’ve got, like, three CDs coming out with live stuff from back in the day. A.J.’s on one of them. The Donington concert’s coming out for the first time on CD. And I said to A.J., ‘You know, we’ve got to really sit down and plan what we’re gonna do, because we’ve got this DVD in Vegas that’s supposed to be filmed at the end of May. And the band’s thinking about, you know, maybe we should put a plan together to figure out… you know, maybe it’s time to bow out. There’s so many things in the works, there’s so many plans and things to discuss. And he said, ‘Listen, there’s one thing you have to know.’ He goes, ‘My shoulder’s been bothering me, and I’m leaving the ADRENALINE MOB tour, so when you hear through social media that I’m not on the tour, there’s no problem. It’s just my shoulder. I’ll get into rehab for the summer.’ This is what he says to me. Just like this. He goes, ‘Don’t worry about anything. All the dates are good. I’m good. Everything’s good,’ I said, ‘Okay.’ I said, ‘When are you home?’ He said, ‘I’m playing The Chance [in Poughkeepsie], and then I’m home Sunday.’ And I said, ‘Let’s get together Monday.’ He says, ‘You’ve got it, brother.’ That was it….Here’s what I think. That shoulder pain wasn’t the muscle strain. It was indicative of something far worse. But, you know, the problem in metal and rock and roll in general is that we always tend to think it’s the alcoholics who are gonna go. Those are the obvious ones. The stories you hear about John Bonham, Keith Moon… They tear up hotels, they’re drunk, they make real spectacles of themselves, [and then] they die. Those are the guys [where] you just go, ‘Okay, well, they lived that kind of life.’ Like the fact that Keith Richards is alive, I think, is kind of mind-boggling to me. But having said that, A.J. wasn’t one of those guys.”

On the future of Twisted Sister, French stated, “Dee [Snider, vocals] is flying in tomorrow, and we’re having a meeting on Wednesday. And we’re gonna discuss several things. We’re gonna discuss the near term, which is the concert in Vegas, which is May 30th. And we’re gonna discuss the middle term, which is getting through the shows in Europe this year. And then we’re gonna [talk about] the long term, which is: Is 2016 gonna be a statement year for us? Is it gonna be…? Are we gonna say…? ‘Cause 2016 is the 40th anniversary of me, Dee and Eddie [Ojeda, guitar] together. And it may be time. It may be.”

EDDIE GETS INTERVIEWED BY GUITAR INTERNATIONAL, READ HIGHLIGHTS HERE

eddie-trunk400 Robert Cavuoto of Guitar International spoke with Eddie about his interviewing skills, what metal needs to make a comeback and his falling out with KISS bandmembers Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons Excerpts from the interview appear below.

Robert: Your interviewing technique is very fluid as you have more of a conversational approach when speaking with artists, how did you evolve that technique?

Eddie Trunk: Before I did any TV, I had over 20 years of radio experience, so that was a huge advantage. The other advantage is that I know 95% of the artists that we are going to sit down with. I’ve probably interviewed them more than a dozen times. Some of these guys are my close friends, which can sometimes work against you.

I want to be able to put artists in a comfort zone, but also not be afraid to ask the tough questions. At the end day the audience needs to be served. It’s a combination of finding that right balance.

A great example was on tonight’s [That Metal Show episode] with Dave Lombardo, before we shot the [show] I went to him and said I know you don’t want to talk about Slayer, but I have to ask you about it. I told him he can answer it any way he wants, but my audience will kill me if I don’t at least ask. He got it and respected it.

I thought it went fine. I don’t often give artists the heads up, but I recently had Dave on my podcast and felt it was a bit awkward for him when I brought it up.

Robert: How do you prepare for your interviews?

Eddie Trunk: Don and Jim do a lot of prep work because they are stand-up comics and this is relatively new to them. They’ve gotten quite good at it and seem more comfortable.

It’s been a running joke when we are in our dressing room and I see them with their heads in books writing stuff down, I’ll yell at them, “What are you doing, you’re making me nervous!” I’m sure the same would apply if I tried to do stand-up comedy.

I do virtually no prep for my radio, TV, or podcasts. I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I don’t need to. This is all I know; I live it every day. The last 30 years of my life has been dedicated to music. Everyday I’m reading it, seeing it, and hearing about it. I have two radio shows a week were I’m probably talking about it just as much.

Outside of somebody who may be a little out of my wheelhouse in terms of music or being new artist, I may need to brush up on their history. Then I may prep, but I very rarely write questions in advance as I don’t want it to feel forced or preplanning. I want to get the feeling and vibe of the artist and see where they want to go with the interview.

Robert: For someone who has been flying the flag for hard rock and heavy metal for over 30 plus years, what do think needs to happen for that genre of music to make a comeback?

Eddie Trunk: I certainly don’t think it has gone away or that it’s underground. I also don’t think its anywhere where it was in the ’80s. I think it is somewhere in the middle where it most comfortably lives and existing. When it was huge in the ’80s, it was a bit of an anomaly driven by MTV.

In the ’90s it was beat to hell which was driven by the changes in musical taste. I think right now we are at a good mid-level spot. For it to become massive you would need a really new big young band that completely storms everybody and has enough mass appeal that it crosses over to even the casual fan.

There have been some new bands which have made a mark like Avenged Sevenfold and 5 Finger Death Punch. What I’m talking about is a band like Guns N’ Roses when they put out Appetite for Destruction, the world stopped and started talking about them.

We need a band like that to give it a big surge.

Robert: Can you pinpoint when your falling out with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS started?

Eddie Trunk: It would be tough to say. There is an incredible amount of misinformation out there about it. KISS fans, and I still consider myself a fan, are very passionate fans. They react to things and sometimes trump things up that aren’t true or don’t have the complete story.

The 98% of the positive things I have done for KISS over the past three decades are not talked about or acknowledged. The 1% or 2% of things is what gets amplified and people run with. It’s unfortunate and as a result I think they [KISS] got bad information.

The last time I spoke to Paul Stanley I looked him in the eye and said, “Dude, we need to sit down face-to-face for five minutes so you can tell me what is going on and clear the air?”

I’m at a loss as I don’t know what they read, what they think I said, or what I did say. If you don’t want to work with me, that is fine, but as a fan I need to know what the issue is.

I have seen many people over the years say they dislike things that they did. I’ve seen comedians impersonate them and really take a piss on them and for some reason that’s all good.

I think a big part of it is they erroneously view me as the “Ace Frehley and Peter Criss guy” which couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s ridiculous I love all the stuff in the ’80s, Eric Carr was one of my dear friends and even dedicated my first book to him.

Just because I’m friends with them doesn’t mean I’m going to play favorites. My door is always open and remains open to everybody including Gene and Paul! I would love to have them on to hear their side of it.

The only thing I said negatively about them, and I stand behind it, is I wish they would have given Tommy Thayer [guitar] and Eric Singer [drums] their own persona.

I can’t look at it that way and choose not to see them anymore. It doesn’t mean I’m not a fan and it doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to do that, but a ton of people feel the same, but very few will say anything.

Artists may not want to say anything, not to jeopardize getting an opening slot since it’s such a sensitive issue.

KISS is the only band you have to be like that with. You can still be a fan of a band without liking everything they have ever done. You would be hard pressed to find a fan of any band who would say that they like every song, every LP, every line-up change in the 30-40 years of their career.

I have found some things they have said and done in my history to me very distasteful, but I let it roll off my back. I would love to sit there and tell them what I think, but it’s not in a negative sense, just my opinion.

COULD BLACK SABBATH’S APPEARANCE AT JAPAN’S OZZFEST BE THEIR LAST?

Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath Black Sabbath will be playing a set at Ozzfest Japan on Nov. 22nd and the band are calling it their “farewell.”

The announcement was made by Sharon Osbourne in the video below.

“Ozzfest will be back in Japan on November 21st and 22nd,” she said. “And this will be Black Sabbath’s farewell. We’re also announcing Korn, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary. Now you can’t miss that.”

Back in September, Ozzy Osbourne said that the next Sabbath album, the follow-up to 2013′s successful 13, and tour was going to be their swan song. “So we’re going to do one more album, and a final tour […] I believe [producer] Rick Rubin is going to do it with us again.”

Given the somewhat off-handed manner in which this was broken — a low-quality video from Sharon that gives equal time to the other Ozzfest headliner — Ultimate Classic Rock believes that this may be Black Sabbath’s farewell to Japan as opposed to their final performance anywhere as they feel news of this magnitude, it seems, would require a press conference from the band or, at the very least, a press release with a lot of information.

SINGER DAVID COVERDALE AND OUR VERY OWN EDDIE TRUNK DISCUSS WHITESNAKE’S “THE PURPLE ALBUM”

whitesnakethepurplealbum640 Mick Stingley of Billboard reports:

David Coverdale calls from his Nevada home near Lake Tahoe, where he has been busy working on post-production for the new Whitesnake release, The Purple Album, due May 19 via Frontiers Music SRL.

..The Purple Album features revved-up versions of songs from Coverdale’s tenure in Deep Purple some 40 years ago, from 1973 to 1976. The idea took hold after the death of Purple keyboardist Jon Lord in 2012, when Coverdale reached out to guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to share his grief and make amends. The two hadn’t spoken in 30 years, and their last meeting had ended in a fistfight, but they started talking. Eventually they discussed doing a collaboration, but talks broke down when they could not agree on the musical direction.

Coverdale was ready to abandon the idea of revisiting his past until his wife, Cindy, made a suggestion. “She said, ‘Why don’t you look upon it as a Whitesnake album?,’ and it really started to resonate with me, especially after a couple of glasses of wine,” he recalls. “And I called my musicians, and they were absolutely thrilled about the idea.” After talking to Frontiers, the band started working on the project. “Everyone did their homework, and every performance is done respectfully in honor of [Deep Purple’s] musicians. Though I focused on the twin-guitar attack of Whitesnake, we had a guest keyboard player because a huge part of the Deep Purple sound was Jon Lord playing that amazing Hammond organ.”

That Metal Show host and terrestrial/satellite radio host Eddie Trunk, a staunch defender of classic rock’n’roll, is also a longtime friend of Coverdale. Trunk had Coverdale appear on the March 14th episode of TMS to discuss the album, and there are plans for him to return when The Purple Album is released.

“David’s always had tremendous musicians, and The Purple Album is an injection of life into these songs, some of which are 40 years old. I’m very interested to see how it’s going to be received here,” says Trunk. “When it comes to Deep Purple, no matter what lineup you talk about, in America they are not nearly as meaningful as they are outside of the U.S. If you talk to people who grew up in Europe, like [Metallica drummer] Lars Ulrich, Deep Purple is as important as Led Zeppelin, if not more so. Here David is known for Whitesnake 1987, even though he’d been doing that for a decade, but in other parts of the world, they’d already known him for years because Purple meant so much more. So maybe [the album] is going to shine some light on how important Deep Purple was.”

It’s not the first time Trunk has supported Coverdale’s career. “A year or so ago he needed a guitar player and he called me up, and we had a few phone calls and good discussions,” says Trunk. Coverdale ultimately ended up uniting with Joel Hoekstra, whom he saw play on That Metal Show, which airs Saturday nights on VH1 Classic. (Whitesnake is rounded out by guitarist Reb Beach, drummer Tommy Aldridge and bassist Michael Devin.)
