SAMMY HAGAR SAYS THAT VAN HALEN WILL NOT ALLOW HIM TO SING ANY OF THE SONGS HE RECORDED WITH THE BAND, SAYS HE MAY SUE

sammyhagar400pix Andy Greene of Rolling Stone spoke with singer Sammy Hagar. Highlights of the interview appear below.

RS: You played some Van Halen songs on Live From Daryl’s House earlier this year. What happened next?

SH: [Laughs] There you go, Andy. You got the f–kin’ pick and shovel out now. Well, there is no question about it, I’d like this to be known, the Van Halen brothers will not allow me to do any of my own songs on TV. They can’t stop me from doing them live, because they’ve tried and they can’t. They want to pretend like Van Hagar never existed. The only Number One albums they’ve had in their life, and they want to pretend like they never happened. I don’t know why they hate me so bad, but I guess I’m too happy for them.

Yes, it’s true. They wouldn’t let me do them. I can hire an attorney and fight them and I’m going too, but I didn’t have time to do that then. On the new Circle DVD we’re making from the live album, Led Zeppelin agreed to let us use their music. And Van Halen said, “No.” And then I said, “F–k you.” I don’t need to do this to survive, and thank God, because otherwise, they would starve me out like I think they’re trying to do.

It’s the lowest, cheesiest thing ever. I wrote every lyric and every melody and I sang them in that band. Alex Van Halen played the f–king drums and Michael Anthony played bass, and I wrote music and lyrics. When you’re singing Right Now or Why Can’t This Be Love, that’s my music. I wrote all the lyrics.

RS: To be clear, they told you that you couldn’t put their music on a DVD too?

SH: Yeah, it’s going to happen, though. It just becomes a legal mess. Also, in my book I wanted to run some lyrics from the [Van Halen song] Cabo Wabo. They wouldn’t let me use one verse, in my f–king book, of my own lyrics. They fought it, and I didn’t have time to fight back since they did it at the 11th hour ’cause they’re assholes. It’s unbelievable that Led Zeppelin lets us cover their songs on TV and anywhere else, and the brothers won’t let me sing my f–king songs. And why? ‘Cause they can’t do them anymore. Without me, they can’t play those songs, and they’re f–king jealous. And that’s the thing that gives me comic relief out of the whole thing.

RS: How exactly did they try and stop you from even doing them live? That’s insane.

SH: When you play live, you turn your set list into ASCAP or whatever organization pays for it. When they saw that, somebody wrote a letter to my publishers or had a guy make a call asking if we’d stop playing those songs live. The answer was, “No.”

RS: You’re fighting back though. You put that video on YouTube when Eddie trashed Michael Anthony’s bass playing.

SH: It’s obvious the fans want Mikey back in Van Halen, before anyone. If it’s gonna be Dave or me, it doesn’t matter in this sense. The main thing they want is Mikey back in the band. God bless Wolfie. It’s got to be frustrating. But Eddie’s just trying to stick up for his kid and to justify that he has him playing bass. He shouldn’t have to justify that. He wants Wolfie in the band, that’s fine. But you don’t have to bash Mikey to make it okay. Mikey is the wrong guy to bash. He wouldn’t stand up for himself in a million years. That’s not because he’s chickenshit. It’s because he’s just such nice person.

RS: Do you ever think you’ll ever speak to Eddie again?

SH: I would hope so. Because that would be really sad if any one of us — I’ll put myself in the same category — took this to our graves. That is not where you take things. I would rather go to my grave with no enemies left. I just don’t think that would feel right. But who knows. Whatever. It’s not my decision because I was the one they pushed out and tried to f–k over. To me, it’s up to them to come back and say they’re sorry.

I’m not sorry for anything. I didn’t do anything. Matter of fact, I did everything for that band. It was 100 percent my heart and soul and the best I had to give. All I did was make Number One albums and a lot of money. That’s all I ever did for the band. Anything that’s been done has all been in anger towards myself and now Mikey, too. To me, they need to come and say, “We’re sorry.” And then our job would be to say, “Great, you’re forgiven.” Boom. Not for a reunion or anything like that. That’s over, to me. That’s completely f–king over. I wouldn’t want to be in a band like that right now.

I’d feel like a hypocrite for joining that band. How about that? There’s a good quote for you. If I joined Van Halen right now, I’d feel like the biggest hypocrite in the world. And I’m not a hypocrite.

10/8: THE LATEST R&R HOF BALLOT

Once again the R&R HOF bands being CONSIDERED for induction was released today, and once again I was flooded with people asking for my reaction. As many know I have long screamed about how flat out disgraceful the HOF has been to hard rock. VERY important to note the bands announced today are only on the ballot to be considered, they are NOT in yet. Deep Purple has been on before and passed over. I mean why would you want the band that created guitar riff 101 in Smoke On The Water in something called the Rock HOF?!?! I can’t rehash again how wrong on so many levels this all is. The fact that a band like Purple has been eligible for over 30 years and passed over is madness at this point. Especially when you consider the number one criteria is influence! If they do make it in finally it will be great, but forever tainted. Especially now that Jon Lord is dead. Disgrace!

Yes? Not a huge fan personally, but again, INSANE they aren’t already in! Cheap Trick? Good to see them come up on the ballot. Amazing band and songs, but I’d be pleasantly stunned if they got in. The Cars? One of the most iconic rock debuts ever. Of course they should have went in long ago. Same for Steve Miller.

Bottom line is we have something called the R&R HOF that is STILL deciding if the bands I mentioned should be in it?! Think about how utterly insane that is! Especially when bands that were influenced by these groups like Chili Peppers and GnR to name a few went in first ballot! It is disgusting! Of course I hope these bands and their fans finally get their due. But because the HOF continues to ignore these guys for decades if/when they do get in it still burns my ass that they made them wait. Pathetic! Can you imagine being on a voting board for a HOF for rock that is still trying to decide if DEEP PURPLE should be in it after 30 years??????

The only reason these bands are even getting a shot now is because bands THEY influenced are now in and have a vote. And you have guys like Tom Morello fighting for some rock. And because the HOF needs to sell a TV show and finally realizes they need acts people know and love. God forbid they may even realize soon there are bands like Journey, Foreigner, Boston, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead and others people actually care about too one day…

DEEP PURPLE, CHEAP TRICK AND YES ARE AMONG THE NOMINEES FOR INDUCTION INTO THE ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2016

deeppurple640 Rockers Nine Inch Nails, pop icon Janet Jackson and top-selling 1970s band Chicago were among the nominees announced on Thursday for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

The eclectic list for this year’s crop of inductees also ranges from a bevy of 1970s-era acts such as Yes, The Cars, Steve Miller, Deep Purple and Cheap Trick, to so-called Queen of Funk Chaka Khan and disco sensation Chic, which has been nominated more than 10 times but has yet to gain entrance.

Rounding out the list of nominees for induction are The Smiths, who broke up many years ago, R & B group The Spinners, L.A. band Los Lobos, rappers N.W.A. and The J.B.’s.

Jackson, despite her decades-long status as a top force in pop music, had never before been nominated. The 49-year-old sister of pop legend Michael Jackson recently released her first album since 2008.

Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first record for induction into the Hall of Fame, which was established in 1983.

More than 800 artists, music industry professionals and historians will decide who will be inducted. Fans will also be able to cast their votes.

The top five artists selected by the public will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be counted along with the other ballots to select the 2016 inductees.

Inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland which features exhibits, educational programs, a library and archives.

The Hall of Fame will announce its choices in December and they will be inducted at a ceremony in New York on April 8th.

SAXON RELEASE LYRIC VIDEO FOR “QUEEN OF HEARTS,” LISTEN HERE

saxon2011

Saxon have release a lyric video for Queen Of Hearts from their fortcoming album Battering Ram, the follow-up to 2013’s Sacrifice.

“With Queen of Hearts I wanted to write something around Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland, and it’s about the chess game that happens in the story,” says Biff. “I wanted it to have prog-feeling in the way of its ambiance and mood. It is a masterpiece of metal and stylistically it is loosely based in Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson.”

Battering Ram was produced by Andy Sneap at his Backstage Recording Studios in rural Derbyshire, and will be released on October 16th. Byford has described the album as “a clash between the retro Saxon and the modern Saxon.” The band released a video for the title track in July (view it here,) and will head out on tour in November, before joining Motorhead for their 40th anniversary shows early next year.

TWISTED SISTER FRONTMAN DEE SNIDER CALLS KISS’ PAUL STANLEY A “DICK”

paulstanleydeesnider_640 Dee Snider has reignited his feud with KISS frontman Paul Stanley by calling Stanley a “dick” and saying the band exude an air of “arrogance.”

The Twister Sister singer fell out publicly with Stanley when the Kiss man branded Snider a “wannabe” in response to comments in which he said it was “insulting” that KISS members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer were using the Catman and Spaceman personas made famous by Peter Criss and Ace Frehley.

Snider replied by challenging Stanley to a rock face-off, saying he’d “bury” him.

Now Snider has moved to explain the spat in more detail, insisting he is a fan of KISS, but doesn’t think they should be shielded from criticism.

Snider tells The Real Radio Show, “Let me lay out my KISS credentials. I own the first seven albums. I have stood in front of a mirror and lip-synched Paul Stanley vocals. So, I don’t think I’m out of line to say that I have an opinion and that I feel that the Ace Frehley impersonator playing guitar now is an insult to fans.

..People disagree – that’s fine. People agree – that’s fine. But Paul reacted to me making a statement and decided to call me a wannabe and a buffoon, and I had to address that in an open letter to Paul, where I pretty much took him out at the knees.”

Addressing Stanley directly, Snider adds, “Paul, I love your band, I love your music. Why do you have to be such a dick? Alice Cooper is not a dick. Alice Cooper has inspired a million people and he’s the coolest guy in the world, yet Gene and Paul have got this arrogance about them, like the world owes them something. We do owe you something, but let us offer it. Don’t insist we buy it from you.”

Twisted Sister will go on a farewell world tour in 2016 with Mike Portnoy filling in for the late AJ Pero.
