  1. I saw the “Megadeth-Behind the Mask” movie last night at a local theater. It essentially was a “listening event” for this new Megadeth album, with Dave Mustaine sharing the backstories about these new songs, as well as sharing what was going with the band at the different album points in its career. Lots of stuff we already knew, but still interesting stuff. Biggest interesting/suprise note for me was the album cover artwork of “Countdown for Extinction” was initially intended for the band Y&T. Early in the movie, Mustaine made a little comment that appeared to dis Kirk Hammett….typical Mustaine, God bless him……When the movie ended, those in attendance applauded. I threw Dave the “horns”.

The theater sound system really made the new songs sound awesome, much better than what my phone sounds like. It’s a great album, and I plan on picking it up today at a local record store. You can really hear the musicianship of the band, and the production of the album. And, for me, its much better than anything Meh-tallica has put out since the “..Justice..” album. Mustaine still has riffs in him!

As for the song “Ride the Lightning”, I don’t know if I would consider it a “cover” song. After all, Mustaine has a writing credit on it. Sure, Meh-tallica recorded it first, but I’m not sure Megadeth’s recording of it should be considered a “cover” song. And, for me, I can hear better musicianship and tempo in Megadeth’s version, but I like Meh-tallica’s version a little more cuz of the vocals. Back in the 80’s, I liked James’ voice cuz he sang with an “angry” thrash tone in his voice.

    1. Yeah man, the musicianship on the new album is incredible. I have a friend who is a big time music snob and loves to nitpick every little thing. He said Megadeth’s version of RTL is nowhere near as good as Metallica. I nearly fell out of chair laughing. Are you kidding me? This version sounds so much fuller, heavier and is mixed perfectly. I agree the vocals aren’t as good as Hetfield though. Overall, I think the new record is not as good as The Sick, The Dying and The Dead. The lead up to that release was so powerful with the singles. But on this one, although overall it’s a solid record, I still think it’s not as good. But I need to listen to it a few more times to really let it sink in to give an honest review.

    2. FYI The target exclusive release has a bonus song not on other releases. I bought a copy off Amazon and returned it today when I found out about the target edition. I really hate it when bands do that crap, but I liked the bonus track so I will be buying the new copy tomorrow from target.

    3. Well, I guess they each have to have something that sets their version apart? It’s all marketing stuff, and I suppose the band also hopes you might buy additional copies for different bonus features?

  2. Cool Rattle. Good to hear. I’m currently listening to Dave on Sirius Liquid Metal talking to Jose premiering the album.

    Good interview and songs.

  3. Nice! I like this version.

Glad I went out in the frigid weather Friday evening to pickup the Target exclusive version. Funny thing, here in the Chicago area only about half the stores carried it, and the one’s that did started with only 5 CDs in stock. Didn’t see the vinyl at the store I went to, and there were 2 CDs left after I grabbed mine.

The Target version CD does have the bonus track Ride The Lightning, as well as the exclusive track Bloodlust. It comes in a plastic jewel case, which I prefer.
