Listen to the middle and outer solos from Thin Lizzy “Baby Please Don’t Go” off “Thunder And Lightning” Absolutely wicked. My all time favorite solos from any guitar player ever! Then John can play the most beautiful heart tugging solos like the ones he did on “Please Don’t Leave Me” with Phil Lynott and solo “I Wish It Would Rain”. Those solo albums have some real gems on them. Sykes had the ” Midas Touch”.. This hits me harder than the E.V.H passing with all due respect. Let’s hope his sons release the finished album. Who knows? There might be several albums worth of music since he had a recording studio in his home. It is nice and refreshing to see all the musical tributes pour in. He was admired and loved by many.
I don’t think I could write anything, that would ever do John Sykes justice, so I will just recount a memory.
Back in the oldern days of the late 80s, I recall reading an interview with John, in Metal Edge, about the impending, Blue Murder album. The interviewer asked Sykes about his debut, as a lead singer, on the record, and I thought to myself, “Oh, he’s going to sing? I hope he has a decent voice, because that would really stink, if he didn’t.” LOL!
So, the day the album came out, I bought it immediately, put it in my cassette player, and was waiting with both anticipation and trepidation. Thank God, to my overjoyed surprise, Sykes, could not only sing, but he sang very well. His voice, was both sweet and soulful, while also having power. In my mind, this proved, there was nothing he couldn’t master. Even Richard Fortus, of Guns N’ Roses, was left flabbergasted by his talent, when he auditioned for the band, which was a complete surprise, to most of us Sykes fans. Read Fortus’ account, here.
Sykes was a master of many talents, and I choose to believe, that as time goes on, many more will discover him, and realize what we have already known, for decades. He will be greatly missed, but grateful for the musical legacy that he left behind, and will continue to live on, and bring joy and inspiration, to everyone.
RIP to a beautiful perfectionist, you will forever be 23 to me. ❤️❤️❤️
