QUESTION OF THE WEEK: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE BAND NAMES?

Off the top of my head:

For coolness: Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Van Halen and Iron Maiden.

For laughs: Napoleon Blownaparts and Endangered Feces.

  1. I quite like the name from a band I’ve known about from Switzerland for over 20 years: Gotthard.

The reason being is that they took their name from the Gotthard Mountains, which has the Gotthard Pass tunnel that runs through them. The idea behind calling the band Gotthard was that it was free advertising on road signs and that everyone, particularly in Switzerland, would remember their name.

It worked: They became the biggest band in the country (after Krokus who also had a bigger following across the world) and every album they have released since 1992 has debuted at Number 1 on the Swiss Album Charts. They also have a good following across Europe and I believe in South America – particularly Brazil.

Sadly, they haven’t been the same since the death of their original lead singer Steve Lee; who was killed on Route 66 whilst motorbiking across the US in 2010. Having stopped on the side of the road to change into their wet weather clothes, a truck came around a bend and the back end skidded out; causing it to hit all the bikes like a bowling ball onto bowling pins. One of the bikes hit Steve, and despite paramedics trying to revive hime for nearly thirty minutes, it was his girlfriend (a former Miss Switzerland) who stepped in to stop them; telling them: “He’s gone.”

The truck driver was obviously distraught, but Steve’s girlfriend went and gave him a hug and told him that he wasn’t to blame himself – which I think shows her to be quite a loving, caring and quite remarkable woman.

I’m guessing that most posters on this website have probably never heard of Gotthard, so I’m going to leave some links below for some of their songs that they did with Steve for you to all have a listen too.
