10. Dokken-Back for the Attack
9. Yngwie Malmsteen-Marching Out
8. Vandenberg-Alibi
7. Icon
6. Metallica-Ride the Lightning
5, Iron Maiden-The Number of the Beast
4. Scorpions-Lovedrive
3. Judas Priest-Screaming for Vengeance
2. Ozzy Osbourne-Blizzard of Ozz
It still blows my mind that Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley were on a new record at the same time.
1. Black Sabbath-Mob Rules
Metal broke with the notion of foreground, and background, so the singer had to go toe to toe with this wall of sound…However, in the studio, the singer usually had the luxury of keeping the music in the background…But from what I’ve read about this record, Ronnie had to sing over the band at full volume in rehearsals and you can hear it…Ronnie just took it to another level here, and we also get another up ratchet from Tony; some of his riffs and leads seem to break dimensions… one killer filler song, the Aerosabbath “Slipping Away” which is so crucial here because the listener needs to take a breather….but then it’s back to heavy neurosis…..where Ronnie, Tony, Geezer, and Vinnie pretty much take the Devil and kick the crap out of him.
Not a bad list by the Metal God
Too bad he mentions no music from this century.
Hard to argue with any list from the Metal God, so I won’t try. I would remove the Emperor, Slipknot, and Korn records, since they just aren’t my cup of tea. And I would replace them with the following:
Judas Priest – Screaming for Vengeance
Megadeth – Peace Sells, But Who’s Buying
Accept – Balls to the Wall
I’d also substitute NUMBER OF THE BEAST for the first Iron Maiden album, and RIDE THE LIGHTNING for KILL ‘EM ALL.
