Sammy Hagar and his bandmates in The Circle, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson, have pulled out their smartphones to record the ninth installment of their acclaimed @Home Sessions, with the release today of the Hagar-penned, Van Halen song Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do). |
Sammy Hagar explained, “When I heard that Kurt Cobain had taken his own life, the first thing I thought of was I wish I were there and could have tried to save him. The original title for these lyrics were ‘I want to show you what love can do‘ but because it was such a dark horrible thing I just couldn’t shine a light on it. So I changed the final line to Don’t tell me what love can do.” |
“It was also the time of the breaking up of Van Halen, our last album and tour so it added a lot of emotion, negativity and pain in the original vocal performance which surfaced the second I started singing this song for the first time since 1995,” Hagar added. |
Finally Hagar explains that “until we can get back to our live shows, these Sessions are a great way to keep the band close and keep our chops up.”

This is 1 of only a few Van Hagar songs that I don’t really care for. “Amsterdam” is my favorite song from Balance. Drop? I must really be old school, it took a few minutes for me to remember what the hell that means! 😉 In the good ol days, when something new came out, it was called “released,” now it’s “dropped?” – I’ll stick with released!
This was one of my LEAST favorite Van Halen / Sammy Hagar tunes. To me it just didn’t sound like a Van Halen song.
With that, my god Sammy hasn’t lost a thing. His voice still sounds amazing even at his age. I truly do not think he gets enough praise. Sammy deserves to be in the Rock & Roll HOF as a solo artist, and all the other stuff he has done over the years. The man is simply amazing!!
Another lock down quarantine video I hate so I watched about 30 seconds , I barely remember this song not a fan but the band is great and sammy is a freak can’t believe his voice still sounds this damn good and powerful in his 70s he’s in a very small club ~
I too am sick of these quarantine video’s. I understand WHY they are doing it but I hate it. I cant wait for this world to get back to normal…god only knows when that will be.
