QUESTION OF THE WEEK: WHICH FAMOUS MUSICIAN(S) WOULD YOU WANT TO TAKE LESSONS FROM?

This applies to all musicians, both living, and those who have passed on.

Additionally, this is also not a matter of whom you want to meet, to fanboy, or girl over, but whom you would seriously consider teaching you, in a professional manner.

First, let me preface, that before I answer, and list my choices, I have zero musical ability. It would take a miracle worker, with the patience of a saint, to help me play, even in the most rudimentary fashion.

So, with that written, my choices are:

Drums are my preferred instrument, so I would love to take lessons from Buddy Rich. However, it has been reported, that he was somewhat of a toughie, so I think he would lose restraint with me. Therefore, my Cozy Powell, would be second in command.

Guitar: George Lynch, Randy Rhoads or Wolfgang Van Halen, as I think he would be very kind (I could also use him for drums).

Singing: Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood

  1. Well, let’s start with the obvious:

    Guitar: Tony Iommi.

    Bass: Geezer Butler.

Secondary to that, I would also like lessons with James Hetfield to really hone in that solid rhythm guitar playing.

  2. Guitar would be Yngwie
Singing would be a paper bag
Drums…probably Greg Bissionette, he looks like he would be a good teacher.
Bass: if you can play guitar, you can play bass. ..or Yngwie again.

  3. Dana, fantastic choices! I’m a drummer and also a lead singer (Sometimes at once). I think Buddy Rich would want to yell at me, I don’t do anything the way you’re supposed to, including stick twirling lol. So, I hear ya on that. As a drummer, lessons from Mitch Mitchell would thrill me to pieces. That man was one of a kind. As a singer, I throat sing like Freddie Mercury did, and he’s the greatest of all time in my opinion. So a lesson from him? Oh, man! Also to be taught technique from Bruce Dickinson would rule my world, the control factor especially. My showmanship is excellent, my vocals very, very loud. “You have a really big mouth” -my wife 🙂

    1. Mr. RN’ R,

I guess I am not the only one, who would think Rich, would lose his patience with them. However, since you are a legitimate drummer (bless you, I am envious) and do everything against the expected grain, yes, he might a bit harder on you. LOL!

  4. Neil Giraldo. Guitar……..piano…….he can probably play the accordion.
Eric Johnson………Dweezil Zappa. As good as they are……..they would make lessons fun.
Advice: if you begin taking lessons from someone and you immediately get a bad, weird or miserable vibe…….make that the last lesson. Your time is The Most Valuable Time of any person you know. Don’t waste it on someone who doesn’t deserve it. Having had many teachers/instructors in my life………and done some teaching…….it’s important to mesh with an instructor when taking lessons. The point of music is fun, feeling good, improving……..enjoying.
