I am really not a fan of cover songs, and for some reason, I get especially perturbed, when bands cover, The Beatles.
I do like Judas Priest’s cover of War Pigs, both versions: the one with The Metal God solo vocals, and the charity version, with Ozzy. I also like W.A.S.P.‘s cover of I Don’t Need No Doctor.
However, with all that being written, hands down this is my favorite cover song of all time, and while I know many may disagree. I think they did a better job than the original (Sorry, Aretha). I think Ron Young is an amazing vocalist, one of my favorites.

Corrosion of Conformity – On the Hunt
Testament – Powerslave
Type O Negative – Black Sabbath
Pantera – Hole In the Sky
Slayer – Paint It Black
(Too) many great covers, so here’s my Top Five (for now):
5). Close My Eyes Forever – David Dramin & Lizzy Hale; came out 10-15 years ago; got very little fanfare, but I clearly recall hearing it and thinking it was better than the original
4). Egypt (The Chains are On) – Doro; from the 2000 “Holy Dio” tribute album
3). Paranoid – Evergrey; from their 2017 album “The Storm Within” (BTW: a band that should be bigger – dark, melodic Heavy Metal, with a singer who actually, well, “sings”)
2). An American Trilogy – Manowar; from 2002’s “Warriors of The World” album; amazing rework of the Elvis classic
1). Nessum Dorma – Manowar; again from WOTW; the great Eric Adams singing in Italian, and nailing it
Most covers are only worth listening to once or twice because they’re mostly a novelty, but Marilyn Manson does some killer covers that he makes his own.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)
Personal Jesus
Tainted Love
You Spin Me Round
Golden Years
Personally I love a good cover song — but only if it’s warranted.
To my point, Tom Petty covers…Tom was an American icon. We’ll never hear Tom live again, so why not let some fans (because musicians can be fans too!) cover some of the greatest music to be written to date:
Eddie Vedder – Room at the Top
Blackberry Smoke – You Got Lucky
Also of note is the new Bad Company Tribute album, Can’t Get Enough. It is phenomenal! Bad Co has finally made the RRHoF, so why not celebrate! Great album from start to finish!
I cant name just one because Greta van fleet did such a great job covering zeppelin’s first two albums ~
LOL!!! Greta Van Fleecing, where are they today? That singer’s voice, was like nails on a chalkboard, made Plant sound like Pavarotti.
Awesome! Along those lines…. Best Zep cover of all-time for me is Great White tribute album. Jack totally nailed it! He also did on Mott the Hoople- once bitten twice shy. BTW- THX Dana for posting the Dokken- nowhere man cover 🙂 Highway 61 revisted by Dylan covered by Johnny Winter on the David Letterman show is probably my absolute favorite cover ever. Johnny did alot of covers and they all rip!
I loathe Greta Van Fleet, as well. However, as to the question of where are they now, they continue to headline and sell out arenas, and two members of the band are featured as a band playing at the Stone Pony in the new Springsteen biopic. Also, they’re featured in the latest Guitar World Magazine.
No accounting for musical taste, I guess….
