QUESTION OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COVER SONG?

I am really not a fan of cover songs, and for some reason, I get especially perturbed, when bands cover, The Beatles.

I do like Judas Priest’s cover of War Pigs, both versions: the one with The Metal God solo vocals, and the charity version, with Ozzy. I also like W.A.S.P.‘s cover of I Don’t Need No Doctor.

However, with all that being written, hands down this is my favorite cover song of all time, and while I know many may disagree. I think they did a better job than the original (Sorry, Aretha). I think Ron Young is an amazing vocalist, one of my favorites.

  1. There are certain bands that one should not touch, and I would normally agree about The Beatles except for the fact that Aerosmith killed “Come Together.” They took that song and made it better, just as they did with “Train Kept a Rolling.” Those songs now belong to them….

    1. Welcome RockRules1,

Nice to meet you and thank you for your input.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree. I really do not like Aeromsith‘s cover of, Come Together, at all.

The only Beatles cover, that I ever heard, that I liked, and thought was well done, was Dokken‘s acoustic cover of, Nowhere Man, which can be found on their One Live Night CD/DVD.

If anyone is interested, you can hear it here.

  2. This is a great question!! The first song that comes to my mind is American Woman by Krokus. It was all over the radio when it came out. The second song for sure is War Pigs by faith no More!! I was shocked on how good the Priest version sounds this late in their career! I think the great Priest have more music in them to release!!!

  3. I gotta think on this since there’s so damn many. First one that comes to mind is Judas Priest’s cover of Slayer’s Dissident Aggressor. Also, their cover of Baez’s Diamond’s & Rust. Metallica’s-Turn the Page and ALL the Lemmy-Motorhead songs they cover as well. Matter of Fact, I love ALL Metallica’s covers wether it be from $5.98 EP Garage Days or Garage Days, Inc.. Of course, @ Rattlehead will surely confirm my findings.

    1. Tasker, you are indeed correct, and I can “confirm” your findings…I agree with you about Metallica’s cover songs. I think they do great cover versions of their inspirations…some of my favorite covers they do are “So What?” by Anti-Nowhere League, “Blitzkrieg” by Blitzkrieg, “It’s Electric” by Diamond Head, and “Breadfan” by Budgie.

But my favorite cover song performed by Metallica is “The Four Horsemen”, originally performed by Megadeth as “The Mechanix”. Yeah, I know “…Horsemen…” is not an EXACT cover of “The Mechanix”, but IMO it is essentially a cover version of that song, albeit with much improved lyrics.

    2. I made an error stating Priest covered Slayer’s Dissident Aggressor. It was the other way around. Slayer covered JP’s original. Ugh.

    3. Okay, I didn’t think that was a cover song. I know sometimes, as a die hard Priest fan, my old memory can sometimes go, but the only Priest cover songs that I was ever aware of, are: Green Manilishi With A Two Pronged Crown (old Fleetwood Mac), Diamonds And Rust (Joan Baez) Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry), and now their cover of Wars Pigs, with, and without Ozzy‘s vocals.

    4. Slayer does a killer version of Judas Priest’s “Dissident Aggressor”. Judas Priest is Kerry King’s favorite band, so I would expect it to “slay”…..
