As a female, I would suppose, more women than not, would agree, that image matters.
Since I am one of those outlier females, the music is far more important, to me. If there is an attractive member in the band, that is just icing on the cake.
I know some may not believe me, but since my old neighborhood in Brooklyn, was one of the last, to get cable, I was a fan of John Sykes, sometime before, I even knew about his appearance. Then, when we finally got cable, and I saw the video for Slow N Easy on MTV, my mind was blow. I immediately wanted to acquire many posters/images of him, for my walls. 🙂
Regarding image in general, I think some of the 80s “fashion,” were quite tacky and cheesy. I always reference Cinderella‘s Night Song, and Dokken‘s Under Lock And Key, covers as reference. Many times less is more. Luckily, both albums are great, so the music, more than makes up for, the less than stellar “image.”

If you want to be noticed, yes, image is important. Try not to look like you’re waiting for the bus. And give your fans a show, don’t be lazy. You have a lighting truss over your heads, and are elevated on a stage. Act like it.
Try not to look like you’re waiting for the bus
LOL!!!!!
Haha! That is so funny Dana about waiting for the bus! I remember this video from the eighties by Killer Dwarfs. I used to laugh. It was like ready… set ….you are being filmed, dance around!! Haha! The music does matter for instance Tool. They could walk by me on the street and I would not recognize them but I have every cd and play them a lot!
When I was a kid, yeah. Now I don’t care, as long as the music is good I don’t give a rats as what you look like lol Hell most bands I listen to that came out post 2000, chances are I have no clue what the band members look like.
LOL!!!!!
Dana, thank you for this weekly fun! It’s a nice community, and I enjoy reading everyone’s comments!
Mr. RN’R,
You’re so very welcome.
Agree totally! Dana is really bringing it 🙂 Super fun to read everyone’s comments. My personal opinion of the question of the week– makes no difference to me at all what a band looks like! As long as they Rock! Brought to mind some bus songs like zz’s “waiting for the bus” and Zappa- ” don’t make a fuss just get on the bus. Might add that image does indeed matter to the artist in who they target for advertising purposes. But not to me. Happy Holidays 🙂
As Steven Tyler crooned – “Let the Music Do the Talking” – so I don’t care if the band is dressed to the nines or if they looked like they just woke up from a 5 day bender – as long as the music is good is all that matters.
I love some of the creativity some performers put into their show/persona. I was lucky to see classic Elton John and Kiss but the same would apply to Marilyn Manson, B52s, and a host of others.
Suggestion for Question Of The Week – Which bands/artists do you think sound better live than in the studio?
I will make note of it.
