For me, the “creators” of Heavy Metal, would be Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.
Hard Rock? That is far more difficult to answer, but maybe The Beatles? Check out George Harrison‘s riff on I Feel Fine (1964), which can then be followed by Paperback Writer (1966), the opening riff in Revolution (1968) and Harrison’s playing in Come Together (1969).

Paul McCartney called that “shadow music” ..and he is a fan of Black Sabbath, who he said took it further…it was a musical direction that developed at the time, and Sabbath didn’t invent it..
Shadow Music? I never heard that tern before, let alone from McCartney? What bands, or specific songs, would be an example of that sound?
Additionally, even though Ozzy is a HUGE Beatles fan, and cites them as his favorite, I thought that I had read somewhere, that McCartney was neither a fan of Black Sabbath, nor Ozzy. I will do some research on that, perhaps I am wrong?
UPDATE: I stand corrected, and learned something, McCartney is a fan, and even said he would collaborate with Ozzy, if it was the right song. Additionally, he watched the final concert, as well….Wow.
